I play a Horizon Walker in a campaign I'm in and my DM made the detect portal a passive ability which was very cool. It's definitely a subclass that I believe truly shines if your DM helps with certain story elements.
@asherandai1000
3 жыл бұрын
I think having as a passive ability is a really great idea. My initial thoughts were basically "when am I ever going to be in a position where I even know to use this ability, let alone can gain some info I didn't already know?" It has such a short range, and such a specific purpose for something that almost never even comes up, or just that no one really thinks to put random planar portals in their campaign. Making it a passive ability I think gives the power to DM to use it as a plot hook/point, while letting the player still feel like it was them that was useful. Without it being passive it's short range pretty much means you already know the portal is their because you pretty much have to be looking for it to be close enough.

My parties campaign is sent in the Moonshae isles, I’m a Ffolk descended ranger who’s grandparents were brutally slaughtered by the Eladrin during their initial invasion, so he’s harboring a bit of a grudge, and it bleeds into blatant racism but he’s working on it, the point is: he’s able to detect moonpools or whatever they are called that are basically Druid-protected wells of wild magic that can function as portals. Our party is dealing with an unseelie incursion unleashing goblins and other fey onto the isles, so my guys abilities shine during the main storyline, but side content I’m mostly sidelined since most of my abilities are focused on extra-planar enemies rather than standard enemies. So being a Horizon Walker is like, perfect story wise and gameplay wise

Hello. With Favored Foe, do you add an extra 1d4 on your next turn if you hit the marked creature again? If so, then a Ranger with a Long Bow could really do some damage. After three rounds you have gotten up to a 3d4 extra damage. That's way better than Slayer's Foe with a 1d6, which can't grow each turn. But there is no contraction which is nice. But, you could stake Favored Foe with Slayer's Foe! One I did was allow the Monster Slayer, once the marked creature got with 60feet to have the option to stop progressing the d4 damage, not take the 1d6 and no longer need concentration. This means the Ranger can keep pouring on the damage to a huge beast, and then have the option to cast a concentration spell as a bonus action. Thanks for reading
@travisdonaldstanley6420
Жыл бұрын
After looking over the internet, it appears that you are maxed out at a 1d4 with FF until the sixth level. That is fair. You could get up to 5d4 extra damage in five rounds and you still have 5 more to go!!! But, what I did was greatly upgrade the Hunter Sense feature for the Slayer. Once they get 60 feet from a monster they can use an action to learn their weaknesses. Once you do this, you can start adding d4 every round if you hit (must have the FF ability) It would be wise to try and get some distance from the beast and then set up a trap and just keep connecting with your long bow. Once the creature is then 60feet from you (that's too close for comfort) you can start staking Slayers Prey and FF!! But you must keep your concentration. You could stop progressing d4 and not take the 1d6 and no longer need concentration. What ever works best. If you are up to a 5d4, and the beast is getting close (60 feet), switch over to Slayer's Prey and keep that 5d4 going and you don't need to worry about concentration (Constitution saving throws). You will not get the 1d6, but uou are fine. But, you can't add anymore d4s. Now you can cast Z step as a bonus action and retreat if necessary. The monster is so close that it will soon attack you in melee combat. Hopefully you have damaged it enough. You may know that it is resistant to piercing damage, so all that damage was only doing 50% 😳 I agree that Monster Slayer is missing that over the top ability that will help the party slay a beast that requires multiple rounds to slay. C is a fair score.

I actually really don't like crossbows on rangers. You are MUCH better off with a longbow and having bracers of archery. You have higher minimum damage that way and have a much larger range to work with. You don't have to worry about reloading with a longbow and basically gain either an ASI or feat slot when you drop crossbow expert. You should never be within 5 feet of someone and shooting realistically so having no disadvantage on ranged attacks while within 5 feet of the target doesn't really do anything. That ASI can be out to much better using even just adding to your Wisdom thereby not only increasing your spell dc, but actually making your initiative bonus higher. On too of something like alert, you can get up to a +15 to initiative giving you an almost guarantee that you'll act first in combat. That maxed with some multi-classing can make the build extremely deadly. I personally prefer 3 Assassination Rogue/3 Gloomstalker Ranger/ 14 Battlemaster Fighter build. You can, even at level 9, do a high damage in the first round of combat. You'll even still be able to apply pressure to the enemy in the following rounds if your party doesn't decimate the enemy in one turn

The Horizon Walker Detect Portal ability may seem niche, but when my DM described the villain using Dimension Door to escape my party, it became very useful. Detect Portal has a mile+ range- far beyond the 500ft range of Dimension door. My HW was able to track the where the villain exited his mini dimension pocket thing, with ease. Now, I can imagine a determined DM ruling against this, but it makes a use for Detect Portal, out of a much more common situation in DnD than planes-hopping.

I think it’s also worth noting that the bonus action ability turns that attack to force damage. Virtually nothing has resistance to force damage. The new Tasha’s ranger class features work great with the horizon walker - planar warrior stacks just fine with favored foe and neither ability uses a spell slot, which is great because protection from good and evil can be really great. But the bigger problem it solves for the horizon walker is the horizon walker is designed for campaigns where you look for portals to different planes, and jumping around from world to world means there’s no point in selecting a favored terrain or enemy at level 1 that’s going to make any sense. But expertise in stealth or even perception can be really sweet.

The build I have in my mind for Horizon Walker runs with polearms. It allows you to leverage reach with the teleport to get you to attack things that would otherwise not quite be in range of a straight melee. Dual wield is kind of shot for HW anyways because of the bonus action economy. Polearm Master isn't as necessary again because of the Bonus Action Economy (it's still good for the reaction though especially if you can fit Sentinel in the build), but you can roll with Great Weapon Master and use the teleports to leverage flanking attacks. Take Favored Foe as the alternate level 1 ability and it applies on hit rather than also burning your spell slots on Hunters Mark and you can use your level 1 slots for longstrider, goodberry, and the like. Horizon walker is really really good with the alternate Ranger ability options.

The real benefit of Planar Warrior is that it allows you to use your concentration for something else without taking a big hit to your own damage. So while yes, Hunter's Mark will give you a slight boost to your damage, if what you're concentrating on is something that gives you more attacks (like Haste - which Horizon Walker gets - or Swift Quiver...assuming you add your modifier to Swift Quiver attacks...I'm not clear on that) the modifier damage will quickly outpace the dice damage of Hunter's Mark. A twilight cleric and gloom stalker multiclass would be a cool roleplaying character. Not sure how well they synergize.

You all forget one important thing. Horizon walker is probably the best class in the game to be used with Pike (and simiar reach weapons) and only class, that can use lance as main weapon without any mount. All this is also confirmed by 30ft range limitation of planar warrior - this class is not supposed to be best archer. With reach weapon, you can easily use this as disengage tool. You can also use lance (and it's 1d12 dmg) 2handed, because before each of your attacks, you just teleport 5ft back from enemy (so you never attack from 5ft distance - so you negate it's usual disadvantage problem). You can also use teleportation before attack to teleport behind enemy blocking narrow gap, that is trying to guard weak ranged characters standing behind him. Combine it with his spells like haste and at lvl 11 HW can: Attack 4 times a turn, move 2times his speed (so usualy 2x35ft) and teleport up to 40 ft on top of that! Ethereal step is also much better, than it first seems - it is perfect disengage tool regardless of number of enemies, it also allows to ignore any difficut terrain (have you ever heard about plant growth? With dash, you would move 15ft in it, with this, you move 30 ft), to go through solid barrier like palisade, hill, fallen tree,... You can also use it out of combat to go through castle walls, through cave ceiling, from one building level to other and you can also combine this with BAs - so if you have ability to dash as BA (Orc, Rogue, Expeditious retreat, ...), or increase your speed other ways, like Tabaxi can, you can move through obstacles 60 - 70 ft thick/wide - olso over abyss, gorge,... And you can also see through solid objects in material plane, so as tabaxi, you can turn ethereal, move 70ft as action and with expeditious retreat, you can move another 70 ft - so 140ft movement through anything! Or as human, you move 35ft into the wall, then misty step through rest of th wall to the other side - 65 of movement all together. And you can add haste on top of that. Why do you think, that this ability is not good? This realy is at least A and Hunter deserved at least B, I realy don't get it (I played those rangers many times and they were always fantastic!).

Something that I didn’t see them note with Gloom Stalker: the ability to be invisible is much more than just advantage! Since the creature can’t see you, they cannot make opportunity attacks against you, and a lot of spells don’t affect you unless they’re aoe as they need a target that the enemy can see. The downside of this is that you’re also invisible to your allies (the ability doesn’t specify only enemies can’t see you), so you can’t be buffed or healed by them either

I planned to multiclass Ranger and Rogue because they are almost similar, but now I can just be a Gloom Stalker which is a merge of the two anyway, and I can level it to 20. Where as multiclassing only allows either Ranger lvl10 + Rogue lvl10, or lvl1 + lvl19, or lvl5 +lvl15, etc.

The one problem with the Gloomstalker Ranger is that if the party relies on Darkvision,, then the Gloomstalker has a greater chance to be caught in AoE spells, since he is basically invisible. Horizon Walker would be useful for a Planescape style campaign!

While i really like these analisis, i think on this one both skipped something important, you keep saying that wisdom is a secondary or even tertiary but thanks to the new Tasha fighting style, druidic fighter, you can make it your main stat and make your saves a lot more deadly. Even with this i really like this videos and hope you keep them coming.

Horizon Walker's Planar Warrior ability may not work well with Hunter's Mark, but I've been using it with Favored Foe (New to Tasha's Cauldron) and it makes Horizon Walker SIGNIFICANTLY better in combat.

For the Horizon Walker...Since you can sense the presence of a planar portal. Would you be able to sense the opening of a bag of holding? Or when a warlock of the blade brings there weapon out from thier plane?

Though the Horizon Walker doesn't mesh as well with dual wielding, you could use a reach weapon and do a teleport/ambush and run away melee playstyle just fine! It's also a cool look and you don't HAVE to use polearm master to use a polearm lol

Keep in mind that darkness doesn't necessary equal dark places. A typical dungeon will usually be dim light all around, and if you're in an area with absolute darkness the encounters there likely have blindsight.

If I ever make a horizon walker ill make a strength ranger with greatsword. You now have a bonus action attack of 1d8 with a 2h weapon, or zephyr strikes for advantage and GWM. Level 11 you can attack x3-4, so 6-8d6 +2d8 (or 3rd level zephyrs for 3d10). Who needs hunters mark at that point? (not to mention multiclassing)

As a dm that homebrew's 100% of my monsters, 90% of which have at least one damage type weakness, I have such a hard time not seeing the monster slayer as the strongest because of that early ability to detect weaknesses. It offers the least for sure as a single character but when you account for a party with some magic users and the ability to tell them which damage type they should be using to deal double... busted. But to be fair, I would still be treating it as a dip into ranger, 3 or 5 levels max

Still disagree with your low Hunter rank. You said it just added more ranger to your ranger and you could make a hunter that is fairly trash if you made bad choices, which is true. But both can be said of the Battle Master as well (which you gave an S rank). It really just adds more fighter to your fighter (to the point that maneuvers were once a base class feature early in 5e) and I could make a bad BM choosing only the worst maneuvers. Most people won't make all horrible choices though, I've never heard of anyone picking the Giant Killer and Steel Will feature over Horde Breaker or Colossus Slayer and EtH or MD. Tldr; it's the battle master of the Ranger class.

Yeah DD really measure dmg output as the highest quality of a class and since Slayer does more than just pump dmg they measured it low; it is the Rangers Ranger for sure

4:51 ...Wait, so the Gloom Stalker turns darkvision enemies into Bugbladder Beasts of Traal? Making them so stupid that they think, if it can't see me, I can't see it? You know, I think Capcom's Monster Hunters would fit in beautifully with the world of DnD. Someone should make a fan expansion...

The new path of the beasts claw feature is specific with its reference one once on each of your turns, but DA just says if you make an attack with an action make another attack... For the Horizon Walker, as haste was mentioned, this would likely result in a HW using the first round to set them self up, this may mean that, especially with certain UA, hunters mark can only just add, but even without that UA, it means that your action is occupied so you with haste and then your just using your bonus action probably to set up to for an explosive second round
