On November 20th, 1863, Crown troops attacked the fortified Rangiriri Pā. Supported by rebel Māori, King Tāwhiao leader of the Kīngitanga movement engaged in a two day battle against the Crown. Dr. Dione Payne from Lincoln University with members of Mawake Taupō Ki Kiwa visit the site of this historical battle. The survivors from Rangiriri escaped to Rangiawhiao whereupon further incursions from the Crown led to the composition of the mōteatea, E Pa tō Hau.
