Opinions are like assholes, we all have one and i have to say, i think this is a terrible rankings. First off lets just clarify this. No Deftones album is an A+. IMO an A+ album is one of those very rare things to find. Its one of those albums that you listen to all the way through and you don't skip songs. Then even if you become so familiar with the album that you will skip songs, those songs you do skip are still like... A- B+ in how good they are. Examples of this would be Master of Puppets, Dirt, Jar of Flies, Far Beyond Driven, Vulgar, Aenima, the Chronic+2001, Doggystyle, Dark side of the Moon, 4, 3, Meddle, D'Angelo/Voodoo, etc. And i don't get that from any Deftones album... now on to the rankings. If we take Pony and Around the Fur and kick those down one to A. Cool. Adrenaline and self titled, move them up to B. These are their four best albums, hands down and the conflict i have with them is Adrenaline has more songs on it that i enjoy compared to Pony and Fur, but the fewer songs on Fur and Pony, are better than on Adrenaline. If this is all making sense. For C we will put Diamond Eyes and Gore. Then the rest go in D.

Koi is definitely the flawless A+ album for me, not a single weak track from start to finish. Around the Fur and White Pony are full of bangers but have 1 or 2 tracks that don't stack up to the rest so they would be A for me. I think the self titled has more enjoyable tracks than SNW so I would swap those around then drop both their ranks (I was pleased you mentioned Kimdracula for SNW, absolutely slaps!!). I agree with you on the ranking of Gore but there is a few hidden gems in there like (L)MIRL whhich has a really sweet build up. Lastly I think Ohms was a huge step up and I rate it as high as an A for sure, I love how the whole album ends on the title track, wraps it up really well.

This ranking is incredible and the way you assess each album is so in-depth, I love it. I feel like Gore would be MILES better if the production and mixing was better. The drums sound like tin cans and the guitars sound blurry and fuzzy, but I really like what they did with Chino’s voice. I just love how each album has a very distinct sound. It really is a difficult task with ranking their albums so props on that! Each album they just deliver something you won't forget. Adrenaline was full blown nu metal and their most raw. ATF is their quintessential sound, but it wasn't until like White Pony where they starting reaching what you can say is the well known Deftones sound. S/T was alright. Love the darker sound but not as heavy as previous ones. SNW guitar sound, theme, and atmosphere all around is still my favorite to date. Thought DE was okay and it was more optimistic in the sound. I anticipated the release of Koi No Yokan at the time so played the heck out of that all winter 2012-2013. It was a really cleanly, produced album. Rosemary instantly became like one of the top 3 songs from them. Never got around to listening to Ohms and Gore completely so still need to check them out.

The thing that i love about the adrenaline album is the sound, the meaning, and how every song has this first sort of melody but has a climax to the end. the tone of that whole album makes it sound so poor but you can really just understand it. adrenaline is a album you would have to understand in terms of listening from the beginning and end

I love this band. Got me through some pretty difficult times over the years. And they pulled a lot of emotion out of me as they currently are right now. I am not going to watch this video but I will be here to comment on the Deftones. First off I own every album they put out. Seen them several times. Have a dozen t-shirts. Live down the street from the brewery that makes their own beer, and I do partake in it. I also run their sticker on the back of my car. But due to the recent band internal Skirmish with bass player Sergio Vega, that's just coming to light, and their lack of addressing the situation has me putting them on hold. I get that there are three sides to every story, theirs, his and the truth. But until they come forward I have to put my favorite band on hold right now as this is really disappointing from what has transpired over the past two weeks. Congratulations none-the-less on your subscriber achievement!

I heard the news about Sergio, like you said there's always more going on than meets the eye but kinda an unfortunate situation. My modus operandi has always been to separate the art from the artist though, and Deftones' music is really something special. It will never lose that magic for me, despite whatever band issues arise. But anyway, thanks for your support for the channel, I appreciate it :)

I'm sure you get a lot of suggestions of bands to listen to, but i want to share a couple that also felt good to me coupled with the Deftones. Finch, Glassjaw, and Eastern Conference Champions. They are not the same as Deftones, but I think that as a Deftones fan you might enjoy them too.

I didn’t really like Saturday night wrist at first, but I feel like that’s what happens with every Deftones album I listen to. They’re all so insanely different from each other that it’s hard to listen to - because your ear just isn’t used to that tone, I guess. I started out only liking a few songs on that album and now I pretty much enjoy them all. Rapture is a song that stands out to me. The rhythm is just so eccentric on that song and it gets me every time.

SAME exact thing with me, initially I was very unsure of it except for a couple of tracks. Now I can listen to the entire album and love every song (yes, I even weirdly dig pink Cellphone, haha!) It's definitely a grower but amazing once you give it the time it deserves.

So sad that Gore gets snubbed…its a grower, definitely recommend spending time with it. Eventually it unfurls a bit and you find absolutely crushing and mesmerizing portions of it that will stick. At times it’s atmosphere is more enveloping than even White Pony and the band’s guitar tone is huge and tuned much lower than that one too which pairs interestingly with how atmospheric and eerie the album is. Either way, solid ranking!

I randomly stumbled upon this video and had to watch it. I admit was afraid going into it wondering what your appreciation for certain eras would be given your apparent age and potential starting point for the band. I couldn’t have been more wrong. You are definitely well versed in Deftones and I can tell you put a ton of thought into your review. Around the Fur is my all-time favorite record and White Pony is my second favorite Deftones record. I was stoked to see ATF get so much love. I think, for me, I might switch the self-titled and SNW. But you’re right about how on any given day, some of these rankings could move around a little. Anyway, great job. Sorry I doubted you (lol) and I will check out more of your videos.

Intelligent, well-thought out, and well-spoken commentary, with just the right amount of cheerful optimism. Subbing. Only positive advice I could give would be to start making tiny upgrades to your backdrop. Maybe some ambient lighting like a soft led strip behind you, some posters of musicians you dig, or 1/8 scale instruments or musicians on the shelves. Little things to make the surroundings more music-oriented and interesting to look at. Wearing some band t-shirts would add to it, as well. Well done!

Solid ranking, I like it. I’d make minor changes to it based off of my personal experience in listening to Deftones for so long. So I feel like Koi No Yokan was a culmination of every Deftones album and it was great and that album achieved peak Deftones, I’d put Koi up top at A+. Gore was definitely my least favorite album too, but as I analyze it, it feels as if Deftones were back at trying to re invent themselves...Enter Ohms. Ohms is great, I’d slot this one in A however, If someone would start to listen to Deftones for the very first time and started off with Ohms, I feel like they’d rank it at A maybeeee A+. Deftones have re what reinvented themselves with Ohms, but it also has elements of old Deftones, I’d definitely rank this one at A and move SNW at B.

Wow absolutely crushed it… great work! Edit: just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I would switch Koi No Yokan and Ohms. Koi No Yokan is such a good vibe, but it doesn’t have an “it” factor for me. Which is why I put Ohms above it. The song Headless from Ohms is on another level for me personally.

Cool video. I subscribed. I've been a fan for almost 20 years now. I used to have ATF and Pony as my top 2 as well. My current ranking: 1. Deftones - 8 2. KNY - 8 3. Diamond Eyes - 8 4. ATF - 7 5. SNW - 6 6. Ohms - 6 7. Pony - 5 8. Adrenaline - 4 9. Gore - 4 I based mine off of how many songs I still listen to regularly. Maybe I just listened to Pony too much tho. Self titled wasn't my favorite until I saw them live are times to appreciate the songs more. Seen them 6 times. 3 times on SNW tour (Taste of Chaos, Family Values, Headliner) and 3 times after Chi passed (RIP), coheadline with Korn, coheadline with Incubus and finally on Gore tour. They didn't come to my area for Ohms tour.

Nice work Molly! 😄 It's definitely so hard ranking Deftones albums, it can change with the day/mood/time of day/what I had for dinner 😂 I 99% agree with what you say though I never really got into the self titled album. I try on occasion but it never seems to click, much to my dismay as I know a lot of people love that album! SNW is so addictive, there are songs on there that are some of my favourite of all time. But most definitely Around The Fur is always gonna be number 1. I don't realise how much I love it until I put it on sometimes, it has the most wonderful nostalgic feel, very emotional! It reminds me of being 17/18 and although it was White Pony era then, which was my introduction to Deftones, when I discovered ATF it just became one of my all time favourite albums. It's awesome to see someone of a younger generation still getting those same feels from these albums us older ones have been enjoying for all these years. It's such a wonderful thing to be a Deftones fan. Long may they reign!

I feel like I’m the one weirdo in the world who thinks self titled and Saturday night wrist are their two best albums. Hands down. Around the fur would probably round out a top three for me, but self titled and snw just stick with me in ways no other Deftones album quite does (and I love every one of their albums). Maybe it’s because those albums are associated in my mind with the emotional rollercoaster that was my teenage years, but my personal faves have shifted with pretty much every new album. It’s only been recently in a retrospective kind of mindset that o realized those two albums just make me feel deeper feelings than any other Deftones albums.

As someone who was going to their shows back in the late 90s, and into bands like Tool, Metallica, KoRn, Megadeth, AIC, and may others at that time...deftones was an easy band to overlook. My friends & roommates didn't really listen to them, and only saw them if they were on someone else's ticket. I knew of Adrenaline, but didn't have it until ATF came out...I got both at the same time. The CDs had to be put to cassette tape to listen to in the car back then, and it was one of those duo LP tapes that got worn out from playing over & over. I saw them in '98 & 2000 at Mammoth/Fillmore. It's hard to place them above what KoRn/Tool/Metallica brought to live-shows back then...but one was perhaps one of the most significant concert experiences I've ever had. You mentioned the break in Headup...Chino crowd-surfed at a 45 degree angle at the start of the song and sang it while rolling across everyone's arms, and they stretched the build-up/break before the finale to give him time to stand up to finish it. He ended up standing on the railing I was leaning against that separates the elevated bar/table area from the floor, with his knee about a foot from my face. Security had encircled him, but let me stay there. The entire crowd had turned to obviously see him, so it was as if I was standing center-stage, next to him, as he blasted out the end of that song and the crowd exploded. Impossible to truly convey that experience if not there. So when you mentioned that break...you can imagine the chill it sent down my spine. Can't argue with much of anything you said, although Adrenaline being where it landed hurts a little. But ok, production value & a mess...although, actually something that makes it one of their best, in a deftones kind of way. Great review! In the end, I sort of have to say that in the context of time...deftones have outlasted all of those others (even if the others are around, they are only a shadow of their former selves). deftones has stayed consistent the most...and arguably a better catalog.
@mollyesanborn

Wow, that's so awesome that you got to experience Deftones like that. I've seen plenty of their live performance videos on KZitem that were filmed around the same time (late 90's/2000) and they're so fun to watch, I can only imagine what it was like to actually be there in person! And I completely agree with you about their consistency as a band too, really impressive the catalog of records they've made over the course of almost 30 years. Not one misstep.
@ShastaBean
2 жыл бұрын
@@mollyesanborn I've watched some of those, too...and while they do give some sense of the energy...Video simply never does justice for the experience of the feeling & sound of the actual live experience. I've looked extensively for either of those shows at that venue I saw, but unable to find anything. There are others of that song and he does surf, but not quite in the way I saw. If you haven't heard or seen...they are starting to tour in a couple of weeks, in case they are coming near to you and can get a chance to go. I may take the daughters to go see them. TBD. Sadly, though, I saw some report that Sergio has bolted/been booted...so, not sure what that means for the shows. Certainly things aren't what they were in the 90s, and no Chi...Chino will always be Chino, even if he's gotten a bit mature.
