great vid as always! however, there are 2 things that irked me about it= 1] both "Atomic Runner" and "Captain America & The Avengers" deserved much higher on the scale... A at the most, and you were FAR too generous with "Dashin' Desperadoes" and their work on "OutRunners"! 2] there was one game missing here: "Vapor Trail"! sure it was published by Renovation but it WAS indeed developed by Data East as a port of their arcade version! other than, great work!
@triplestar100

@Arcade Kaos glad to be of assistance in finding quality! "Vapor Trail" had 2 sequels on the arcade= "Wolf-Fang" also known outside Japan as "Rohga: Armor Force" and "Skull-Fang", both of which had a home port on the Saturn and WF/Rohga had modern ports for the PS3 & Xbox360. hope that helps.

Yes! This was one of the companies I couldn't wait for you to tackle. Data East used to be a major player in the arcade scene back in the late 1980's and early 1990's. They were also known for publishing Mega Turrican for the Genesis which is just...wow. Data East is one I find most people forget and that's a shame because when they were on, they stood toe-to-toe with the best. Addendum- I have the Captain America pin as well! I kept my original copy of the game in its clamshell case just like you. ;)

My one, my ONLY problem with the "Turrican" series, is that they set the screen to scroll according to the character sprite (as opposed to ahead of the character sprite), so there's very little time to react because you're always on the side of the screen that is advancing. Granted, I haven't played them all, but every game in the series that I have played has done this, and it's such an easy thing to fix with programming that it disappoints me every time I pick one up.

Think you're a little rough on Capt. America and the Avengers. It's a very fun game, you just can't take it too seriously. Kinda like a B movie. Atomic Runner deserves an A. The Genesis version tops the arcade for once. Two Crude Dudes is slightly above average, but I don't think it deserves an A. I think a "B" would be more fitting.

What happened to Vapor Trail ...? Atomic Runner is one of the best arcade conversions on the console, in fact it beats the original title. Due to the scrolling of the screen I consider it a hybrid shoot em up and not just a run and gun. Good catalog from Data East in Genesis and very underrated ...

Interesting! I played Pool Legend before Side Pocket and to me the physics are way better in the sequel, plus I only played it in multiplayer, so the CPU thinking didn't bother me, that's why it's an A for me, and Side Pocket would be a B, because it feels more "slippery", the balls wouldn't stop spinning and it's harder to predict an angle.. But now that you gave it a higher score I might try to revisit it!

Huge comic fan, and that translates. It's cheeseburger games. And I am fine with that. John, thanks for all you do. I really appreciate it. Big fan of Side Pocket. We had a rental copy at our store. It was always out. That's the NES version though. I had a lot of fun with pool on Wii Play, but it does have issues. But SP had cute ladies. At 13, I dug that. I loved Karnov but couldn't find a copy for sale. DE certainly made interesting games or as a publisher. Like Bad Dudes. It's ridiculous and I love that cheese factor. You just roll with it. I know Two Crude Dudes as Crude Buster. I never played the Megadrive version, but did play the arcade version. Great game and funny too! I don't know if the Megadrive/Genesis has speech, but in the arcades, when you get knocked over, your player character sits on the ground, shakes his head and says "what a day!" in a real gruff voice. 13 year old me had a great laugh! Shame that it isn't more well known. Sega actually let Data East publish a game from their Outrun franchise?
