CORRECTION: It seems like I completely forgot to include the film "in Fabric" on this list, so let me just make a short addendum here. If I were to put it on this list, it would be number 13 or 14. I can see why some people like it, but I thought the pacing was all over the place and the film was a bit too long. I agree with Sean Baker in that it needed to be shot on film to fully capture the Giallo aesthetic that Strickland was going for. The digital cinematography betrays the retro vibes. It isn't a horror film, at all, though, even if it was marketed as one. It's a dark absurdist comedy that satirizes the world of retail. I mean, how scary can you make a killer dress? I just think that too much was going on in the film and the hopping from protagonist to protagonist made the only through-line this dress, which I just didn't find to be a compelling... villain? I did like the cult members though and I enjoyed the weirdly stilted acting. The score and sound mixing were also great. I'd probably recommend it if you want a goofy dark comedy and you like films that are pretty weird. Anyways, sorry guys that I completely forgot to include this in the video!

Typically, scary things only happen in the dark, which is usually at night. So this movie having light out all day and night, gives it this creepy feeling because the sun isn't protecting you from the evils of the dark. You can't just wait a few hours until the morning.

The relationship aspect in Midsommar is crucial to the plot; their relationship could've been "worse", but the boyfriend failed her in a time where she needed help processing or at the very least expressing her grief. That's what made her vulnerable to a cult, which, like many cults, promised a community and "safe space" for her to express her feelings, which she couldn't get anywhere else--that adds to the darkness of it all.
@sunnygreenings4840

I wouldn't call Midsommar "breakup story," either. This girl had NO ONE to help her deal after the horrific deaths of her parents and sister (I assume she never saw the bodies, but wouldn't she have been called as next of kin to id?) At any rate, the boyfriend failed as a human being. What is it to be human, to share another's body and life, to proclaim love? What is a "family?" What does it mean to be someone's sister? These are the most basic questions to life as we know it.

Yeah definitely, but the guy in the video has a respectable opinion. Obviously Midsommar is an amazing movie and some of the bad aspects he gave can actually be good aspects for others just like me. The "love relationship" in the movie makes it unique and is definitely the whole parting point for the movie to work as it does but for some people it might be "boring". Midsommar is one of my favorite movies, i clearly see it as one of the movies that will be studied until the end and the mixed opinions will maintain the movie alive. Is the same with The Lighthouse, some people hate it and some people love it just like me and The Kino Corner which is at the end the whole point of cinema.

Okay but the commentary on Midsommar left a bad taste in my mouth. The comment about how women aren’t concerned with the how or why was completely uncalled for. The joke about it being women’s joker was funny enough but you should’ve left it there. It quite literally is about miscommunication, mental illness, and toxic relationships; they don’t have to be compelling because neither of them within the movie are happy with each other. That point’s made very clear very early on.
@icp7201
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt like most of the points about Midsommar were superficial and made by someone who didn't really get the message of the film. It's mostly about how cults predate on vulnerable people, and Danny, having gone through the horrible experience of her sister murder/suicide, is extremely vulnerable to manipulation. The point of her relationship was to show that the only way out one might have against it, a strong support system by people who love you, was lacking for her, since Christian was a very absent and cruel boyfriend. Also, about the characters being "dumb". I agree. But that was the point, kinda. It alludes to the cliché of horror movies where the behaviour of the characters is what leads to their demise, sort of in a "punishing" way. It's supposed to make you think that the reason why Mark and Josh were killed was because they transgressed the village rules. But then, in the end, the rug is pulled from under your expectations, and you learn that it didn't matter: they would have died for the sacrifice anyway. Their behavior puts them in contrast to Simon and Connie who, although being very cordial guests, were also sacrificed. Not to mention that Christian was also very clearly still high after his rape scene, and that's exactly the reason why he acted so awkwardly, by running around naked. I don't know what made the author of the video think that he suddenly became sober. And then there was the weird and incelly and misogynists bit at the end, generalizing women =P

For someone who claims to be a film buff, you certainly don't seem to actually pay attention to anything the films are actually saying. The Midsommar section especially is blatantly misogynistic. Pure edgelord "are you mad yet?" Cringe I'd expect from a bigger youtuber. The most interesting part of Midsommar is the relationship, because it's not a traditional breakup movie. It's two people who have drifted apart and no longer bother hiding it. The cult shows them what they really are, a girl who wants to feel important and have attention paid to her after suffering some horrible tragedies, and a guy who doesn't really care and is looking for his next lay.

He obviously doesn't get that movie. It's not a revenge story. Honestly Christian didn't even have to get caught for her to have made that decision....or necessarily even be a shitty boyfriend. It was about her untieing herself or escaping from that toxic relationship she (or he) couldn't bring themselves to do otherwise. Her smiling at the end isn't about revenge or justification. It's about her finally being free of that relationship. Free to grieve as she needs to. That's just my interpretation of the film. I've read several other interpretations that I can see as well. The movie is a piece of art. It's definitely not as this guy made it out to be. He's mocking women for liking it when he doesn't even get it. So it's hard to even get mad because it is obviously just ignorance. Anyone male or female who has been either of those characters in that relationship gets it. It really is it's own horror story.

I almost never genuinely get scared by horror movies. Sure I might jump at the odd jumpscare and I love a creepy af vibe. None of that is to brag about how tough I am or whatever. But Hereditary BROKE me for days. It was trauma, trauma, trauma and a lot of the imageries used in the film -- sparingly, which gives them even more power -- still stick with me to this day. It was the only horror film I saw as an adult that actually kept me up until dawn because I was so terrified of falling asleep and awaking to a family member knocking down my door to kill me for Paimon. I was also starting to see this girl who was *really* into pagan, witchcraft stuff. Nothing wrong with any of that. But this movie left such a mark on my psyche that I could not date this person because she would talk about believing in ghosts, demons and making wards against demons and shit. Talking about how her aunt was possessed by a demon when she was little and "I was like OH HELL NO I'm OUT, have a good life!" I loved Midsommar too but it didn't hit me quite the same way. @AaronHatcher

I have a theory about it. To me it's about a relationship mixed with a movie about a cult. But the over arching thing going on that most people don't notice is what type of cult it is. The cult is 100 percent a white supremacist/nationalist pagan fascist cult. This makes a lot of it make alot of sense when you think about this while watching it. It shows how someone who is probably very opposed to white supremacist/nationalist can still end up being tricked and turned into someone who isn't just bystander to horrid acts/extremist beliefs like white supremacist/nationalist beliefs but they become an active participant and happy with it without even realizing the reality that they are apart of something they once hated but it's too late once she realizes it. If you want to watch a video that explains all of the details about this certain theory of midsommar I'll comment it in the next reply comment for you in case. (BTW I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. I just wanted to introduce another aspect that most people miss.)

Well, yeah, I'm definitely mad about your first reason for downgrading Midsommar, lol. To me, the uncomfortable relationship between the main characters was 110% vital to core aspects of the film! The commune section of the film began (and really continued) by exploring the alienation of modern life in comparison to the connection of traditional communities, and used that as an absolutely back-breaking contrast to the slowly revealed horror, making the audience feel torn, and helping us understand how the main characters might be drawn into cooperating with the ritual. Florence's character choosing to stay with her dick boyfriend was specifically because she was utterly alone and vulnerable after the death of her family; it fully fit into the film, and it massively heightened her anxiety, knowing on some level that she was relying on someone who did not have her back, but not seeing any other options. I can see how some people might have trouble relating to this, but I'm gonna go full hot-take and call that gap in human understanding and empathy. Tho I suppose that having personal experience with both an abusive partner and culty religious communities might have given me a bit of a unique connection to the dynamics of the film.

i know you were exaggerating your dismissal of midsommars 'white girl' audience, but I think it revealed some very specific discourse that you're involved in that maybe some others weren't. I think there's a tenancy for letting external discourse taint critical perception. Not totally avoidable, but still affects how you view the MC in particular. i also don't know how to read the 'most woman' cheating line. I also think your view on the 'white girl masses' perspective as 'problematic girlboss fave' is somewhat narrow and uncomplex. There is one element of Midsommar that I have yet to see addressed in any video essay and it baffles me because it was one of the strongest things that stood out to me from the very first watch, and that is the theme of a found family. The protagonist, who we get a sense had a really strong bond with her family, loses her to tragic incident right at the start of the movie. This leaves her with her bf, who was already planning in ending their relationship, as her sole pillar of support in life. We can see how this loss and lack of support haunts her throughout most of the early film, and in the scene where she finds her bf "cheating" on her, what happens when the last constant in her life is lost? The cult girls follow her and sooth her, they share in her pain and suffering, and at the end when she chooses to sacrifice her bf she is willingly severs the last remnant of her painful past and trades them in for the comfort of support of her newfound cult family.
@chelsie6605

I have seen this addressed in other videos! Look harder and you’ll find them! :):)
@Tyler_W

Idk I'd be hesitant to take the "emotional support" at face value. The entire scenario was contrived by the cult itself to further alienate her from the outside world so that she'd join them. The crying scene may or may not have been genuine, but it was absolutely emotional mirroring, a psychological manipulation tactic. There is a theme about found family, and you aren't wrong for recognizing it, but that's from the perspective of the victim, Danni, who is being emotionally exploited, manipulated and isolated to get her to join a dangerous cult. She's their initiate, and the entire plot was a deliberate attempt by her Swedish college friend to get her to join the cult. There's a really good video about the targeted manipulation tactics used by cults that was excellently portrayed in Midsommar which the director deliberately used to manipulate both the main character and the audience who identified most with her experience.
@DKZK21
2 жыл бұрын
@@Tyler_W that's actually my point. Her longing for family and stability makes her vulnerable to the cult's cunning. I'm not arguing that the cult is actually a good thing for her, just that they provide her with something she is sorely lacking. I think Midsommar is better on the second viewing when you have the scope to see it from afar. You could really pick it apart if you focus too much on the details. Also, Midsommar and Hereditary are inverses of each other! Midsommar is plot-driven with reactive characters but the cult gives Dani the power and choice at the end. Hereditary feels more character-driven with active characters who turn out to have no power or choice at all against the cult. Of course, active character-driven stories are more fun to follow.

Thus pregnancy-horror based movies are a niche, I actually really enjoy and find effective to me personally. However, I understand a lot of people don't like false positive. I don't really think the "oh it's the doctor's semen"" would have been as traumatic. VS being gaslight, having intuition somethings wrong, being lied to, and then having two babies to handle that she didn't want. Or more so, couldn't want after the manner of their conception + gestation. The original marketing for Hereditary was actually quite genius. It might have one of the best trailers I’ve seen; it gives away nothing that betrays why this is actually a horror movie and not just a family drama. From seeing the trailer having never heard about it, to just quickly checking the RT score and then not looking into it further, the leap from “saw the trailer, went in blind,” was so powerful that it’s hard to articulate. It’s easy to see why it would be disappointing if you caught wind of it a few weeks after release and with all the extreme hype for it. Going in with no expectations other than it looked well produced and creepy, it was just exceptional, and made me physically uncomfortable in the best way. From the trailer, you simply cannot guess that this is the story of a decades long satanic possession ritual from the perspective of the sacrificial lambs. I can unequivocally say it was the scariest horror movie I’ve seen in my adult life, especially never having seen Rosemary’s Baby or having any suspicion about that element. In fact, the original trailer almost misdirects us into thinking the daughter is going to be some sort of evil force, rather than the victim she is. As you said, a film that gets better with repeated viewings and an incredible debut film for Aster.

I care about this guy making blanket generalizations about how 50% of the population ‘acts’ according to his view. That’s Misogyny.

I watched Lamb without knowing anything about the film at a festival but I really enjoyed it. The reveal worked but I do agree that you can't market the film at all if it takes so long for the reveal. The special effects were pretty solid in my opinion

I liked Lamb a lot too! It was a weirdly comforting film that had some dreadful and tense moments. I was constantly caught between finding Ada adorable versus seeing her as sinister. (And the scene where the uncle took her out to the field honestly had me panicking!)

Ramman had me uneasy because like how tf did that creature even come to be, that plus I just knew it was going to come back and do something bad, BUT I can see how someone would find the overall movie boring and lackluster.

I really have a hard time enjoying this. You’re very straight faced, and monotone. You’ve completely missed the point of some of the horror movies you reviewed, and focus more on the marketing techniques of the movie then the actual movie itself.

The Witch is the best horror movie I've seen so far, even more so than The Lighthouse, purely because the experience is akin to watching something you're not supposed to be privy to.

it's not horror or made by A24, but have you seen the Northman yet? Robert Eggers, the director of the witch and the lighthouse, is a genius! The movie is so epic.

Tusk is so good! You've for sure missed the point with some of your observations. The painfully bad comedic aspect is intentional. For Wallace's character it's an observation on low ball tasteless talentless humour often heard on casts/stations/channels of that kind. It's meant to be cringey.

It Comes at Night IS a horror movie. The film just exerts horror in a different and much more dreadful way. It was not marketed the right way, but that does not mean that the movie hasn’t got the horror element embedded into its core. It’s pure dread, it’s terror about losing your loved ones, it’s fear of the unknown and the different and it’s horror of the self.
