I really think they made all the faction-unique Combat Patrols as a way to sell upgrade frames, given that they factor in the fancy shoulderpads and decals into the price, as if it's something you're buying the box for. Take the upgrade sprues away, and those boxes are all just generic Space Marine boxes. I wish there was just one melee unit in the box, maybe Assault Intercessors or something, but I still think getting the Blood Angels box and the Dark Angels box will give me a banger 1000 point army to start with no matter what chapter I'm playing (which is still Blood Angels, I'll be getting some melee units later on). Gives me a ton of Gravis which is cool, I love Gravis armor.

The sad thing is that the Death Gard and Thousand Sons boxes don't sell those factions to new players at all - no-one picks them up for the chaff units, you pick them up for their unique legionaries. The World Eaters one is a much better example - sure you wouldn't want to buy it twice, but it is absolutely a nucleus that you can attach other things onto with ease - If they'd just done 20 Rubrics, an infernal master and 10 space chickens or 20 plague marines and 10 zombies (or even 14 and 20 respectively) and a generic character they'd already be much better.

i could actually see buying the WE ComPat twice. but not at the same time. you buy the WE compat to start and build Lord Invocatus, then you buy some eightbound, a demon prince, a MoE, Kharn, Angron, etc. but then you need more infantry, Berzerkers are 40 quid a box and jakhals are like 32 quid a box, just buy the compat again get all that at a discount plus a free lord on jugg. and then you buy the compat for Daemons and that should be about 3000 points if not more. when i want more reg infantry for the WE i could 100% see myself buying the Compat cos 2 of them and you never need to buy WE infantry ever again

I'll be quite honest, I really hope that 10e reworks most combat patrols. The worst ones really suffer and the best ones thrive. 100% about the Black Templars CP box: The Intercessors should be swapped out for Sword Brethren. I have a Black Templars and Ultramarines army, so I just used the 5 Intercessors for Ultramarines. I bought several different Space Marine CP boxes to expand my armies. IMO the Dark Angels CP was the best discount army builder because of the Redemptor AND Inceptors. For the Combat Patrol game mode, the Black Templars CP is one of the WORST because of its relatively low points and the 5 Intercessors, which don’t synergize with Black Templars’ melee strengths. Furthermore, 10e’s rules dictate that a Dedicated Transport unit MUST BE LOADED at the start of battle, and the only unit from the CP that can fit is the Intercessors Squad. It doesn’t make sense to transport a ranged unit into the midfield in Turn 1, so all you can do is unload the Intercessors in your DZ - but then you can’t move the Impulsor that turn. At best the loaded Impulsor sorta lets you re-deploy the Intercessors if they’re in a bad position after the Deployment Phase. Whereas if the BT CP had 5 Sword Brethren, it would be useful to transport them into the midfield to capture an objective or possibly get them within charge range in Turn 1. If GW redoes the Combat Patrol boxes in 10e, I hope they swap out the Intercessors for Sword Brethren for the 10e Black Templars CP box.

Another positive is that the CP box pairs well with the TS Boarding Patrol because there’s no overlapping units. That’s where I got my Rubric Marines. It’s unfortunate that the BP boxes are limited runs, and like the Council of the Crimson King Battle Force box, once they’re gone, they’re gone. To answer your question in the beginning, I played a CP tourney the other week - - SM boxes seem kind of underpowered. Hard to accomplish objectives with a net 10-12 models in 2 squads + a big unit lol. - Tyranids have a *STUPID* easy secondary where the winged prime just has to kill a *model* and you get 4VP. That guy won the tourney and I don't blame him for running Nids that secondary is braindead easy. - Sisters are actually okay here, with really good synergy (unlike their 10th ed counterpart lol).

I picked up a T'au box to play in our local Combat Patrol night as it's something very different to my usual Nids /Daemons armies. It's great fun to play and just auto-deletes swarm units, but has no reliable way to deal with high toughness and save models - as an example when I played against the older Nids Combat Patrol, the Hive Tyrant had two turns of my entire patrol going into it, and only lost 4 wounds. It could probably have solo'd my entire patrol.

Old Necron combat patrol (technically not CP anymore) is also worth mentioning. From Point perspective it's 530 points if you build immortals and doom scythe. Flyer is kinda hit'n'miss for starting an army but if you're looking for scythe overlord, some immortals, tomb blades it's great value. For fleshing out your army it is nice deal. Bad for starting.

I still can't forgive that GW axed Start Collecting line (sometimes it had MORE points and mostly better unit composition) and Boarding Patrols were very limited run. Excuse me while I go outside to yell at the clouds. Anyway, my top 3 (even for repeated buys) would be: Genestealers, Drukhari and "one of each" for Marines.

The Custodes is blatantly false? It has less than 15% discount and is abysmal. Seems to be a lot of examination of the points in box, without any evaluation. It is 3 kits, each retailing for $60. 3x60=180. Almost no-one runs or wants Sisters of Silence. Just buy the bikes and guard separately, save $40+, spend that money on another box of custodian guard or Allarus. The only people who would be happy buying the box are collectors who want some SoS. Awful error.
@Rotebearda

You're actually incorrect as sisters come 5 to a box at $60 which is an insane rip off of GW. You're better off buying a box of sisters of battle and custodian guard

GW does some things with some of the combat patrol boxes that I find inexplicable. Because GW insists on all of the combat patrols being all primaris marines, the Deathwatch one misses out on pretty much all of their flavor. None of their odd units or signature weapon options are there. The Death Guard one does the thing where they pack it with filler units. It also does the thing where they include a model that has dubious utility in a combat patrol game. Why include an expensive special character in a combat patrol? The Thousand Sons one does the filler models thing. It also does the thing where they don't include the army's basic troops choice in the combat patrol. No Rubric Marines? The general Space Marines one does this too. No intercessors? The Space Wolves falls into the all primaris models meaning you don't get the faction's signature units. It also does the thing where a lot of the plastic is tied up in one large model of dubious utility. The Tau one does that too. Where is there a Ghostkeel battlesuit but no crisis suits in a combat patrol box? The Necrons one does that too with that flyer.

Discussion adjacent: Honestly for Marines I would prefer three different Combat Patrols: Phobos, Tacticus, and Gravis. They could keep the now discontinued Combat Patrol as the Phobos set, in the Tacticus Combat Patrol they could go with 5 Intercessors, 5 Assault Intercessors, A Redemptor Chassis Dreadnought, 3 Outriders, 5 Hellblasters and a character, while the Gravis could be the Gravis Captain, 5 Heavy Intercessors, 3 Aggressors, 3 Inceptors, and 3 Eradicators. But as others have said the Combat Patrols should be ones you want to get multiple times. That generally means the army core and some good support units.

I really like the T'au combat patrol. To get it to 500 points, I'll first be a bit crazy and say throw out the Ethereal, but replace him with 5 Vespid Stingwings, and for the last 40 points add 4 Kroot Hounds. They are a distraction that can contest or capture objectives if ignored, and between them and the Vespids you get mobility. The Fire Warriors, Stealth Suits and the Ghostkeel Battlesuit works quite well, and I love the Cadre Fireblade. You have to buy the Vespids and Kroot Hounds as well though. -1 Cadre Fireblade -10 Fire Warriors -3 Stealth Suits -5 Vespid Stingwings -4 Kroot Hounds -1 Ghostkeel Battlesuit For 500 points this is rather fun, and you get 5 units on the board.

I always thought about starting a Thousands Sons army, but every time I look at either the "Start Collecting" or the "Combat Patrol" box for them I'm like "eh no." Lol, I was wanting Rubric Marines and Terminators. Besides the number of models you get, I generally liked the kits for the "Start Collecting" more than the "Combat Patrol", feels weird getting an Astra Militarum box set that doesn't include a Leman Russ lol, though I ended up turning the infantry into heavy weapon squads (buy buying extra bases and wizzywiging the heavy weapons onto sandbangs and stuff.) I'm tempted by the Combat Patrol Custodes now though.

With the old heavy weapons teams and cadians you could switch out a standing troop for a kneeling guy on each Hvy base and get an extra two heavy weapon users. Meant i could turn a box of heavy weapons into 6 teams with the help of some extra bases. Im guessing thats not possible with the new kits, as they seem pretty rigid and static

Pretty much agree with this list just some very minor quibbles. I think if someone both likes the zombies and wants Typhus then the Death Guard box is pretty amazing. Problem is that if you already have a DG army then that box is kinda pointless. I also think the biggest strength of the Astra Militarum box is that you can easily buy multiples. You’re going to want infantry, command squads and sentinels plus having extra ordnance batteries let’s you have all the options for that unit. I own a ton of Imperial Guard models but I’ll happily pick up two of those to get the new sculpts and plenty of them. Last I think the AdMech one is a solid starter but if you already have an AdMech army you have all of those units and you don’t necessarily need more of them. Much like the DG they are pretty great for a new player but just not so much for someone who already has the models. It is also nice to see that the Leviathan box provided so much value. I have a ton of marines but the new marine combat patrol is really fun. I never would have considered buying Tyranids before but the set really has me liking the new models. Enough to consider picking up a couple kits here and there and nice to see it’s such a big discount.

I play Chaos Daemons, and in the fight between the "objective" numbers and what people rank them I definitely go for the subjective numbers. Mono-Khorne is a pretty big problem all on its own, but then you add on the fact that it's full of bloodletters which are currently way overcosted in points, and that infantry in general is not being used much in Chaos Daemons right now, and you have a box that is very efficient at getting you a lot of units you don't really want anyway.

I agree with the Thousand Sons one, it had basically the same grade in 9th, thing is a few days ago on Amazon US the CP was going for $92 (And Aeldari for $112), so for that price I paid for the Infernal Master and the Terminators, and got the Tzaangor stuff for free, pretty good deal imo. Also sad for how Custodes have fallen, that box was Top 3 last edition, now with the overcosted bikes that are kinda crap... Not that significant, better to get more Custodian Guard
