Pete great job with describing each album and top tracks. I was close friends with the great trumpeter Lew Soloff. I saw BS&T many times and as a fellow trumpeter it was magic. Lew helped me picking out a new trumpet. He was also a great studio musician and played lead on many popular albums of Sinatra, Streisand, Maynard Ferguson, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews, Tony Bennett, et.al. Sadly Lew passed away on March 8, 2015.

Their second album won the Grammy for album of the year. After Al Cooper left they asked Laura Nyro to be their singer. She declined. She was dating Jim Fielder who went on to be Neil Sedaka's long term bassist. Nyro wrote And When I Die and He's a Runner. In November 1969, covers of Nyro songs were at 1 2 and 10 on Billboard with And When I Die at 2. Wedding Bell Blues covered by the 5th Dimension was 1, and Elis Comin covered by Three Dog Night was 10. Lou Marini plays the very high horn note at the end of Nyro's Save the Country (1969).

BS+T/ Chicago both had a lot of great, hit singles on their albums. But it was all the other stellar music that made them great. Back in the late 60s/ early 70s we would listen to an entire album to get the full impact of the music being offered. Lots of groove to be had. ( and it's interesting to note how many artists did covers of TRAFFIC songs ). Best Wishes. And thank you Pete for your ranking the albums series. P S Both AL Kooper and Steve Katz were in The Blues Project before starting BS+T. I knew those 2 names sounded familiar ....

My story with BS&T is that they opened my eyes to jazz, jazz-rock and fusion. My father, who was a jazz musician, had a large record collection, including BS&T 3, "Hi-de-ho" was my favorite track. I was probably 12 - 14 years old at this time. Two other records in that collection that influenced me a lot were Steve Kuhn (Trance) and Chick Corea (Return to forever). But it was BS&T that started it all, still one of my favorite bands. The record BS&T "Live and Improvised" is still one of my favorite live albums, with that incredible tuba solo by Dave Bargeron. Love it.

I like BS&T (especially the earlier stuff) quite a bit but don't have it categorized under (jazz/rock) fusion. To me not 'fusiony' enough for that - kinda more in that jazz-rock league with Chicago & Chase (but not as heavy/rockin')

@@wolf1977 Love me some CHASE! I own 2 of albums-the debut and the follow-up. I bought it because I was familiar David Chase's work with Sinatra, film, and television work! I joked they were a "wall of Maynard Fergusons." 😂 As a sax and horn fan, I wish they hadn't suffered their tragic fate.

The last BS&T studio album was 1980 "Nuclear Blues". David Clayton-Thomas has retired touring BUT will still make studio albums. BS&T with DCT did a song that was the TV theme show "Muggsy" (known as "GO USA" on NBC Saturday afternoon at 12:30 from September of 1976 till the reruns in September of 1977). Their last charted song in the U.S. was "You're The One" in December 1976 (from "More Than Ever" cover of the Columbia label) peaking at # 106 (Bubbling Under) & # 6 (Adult Contemporary).

Thanks for adding the great BST to the channel Pete. At their peak they produced some sublime music but all that potential and promise was never quite fulfilled and the albums were too often disappointing. Changing line-ups did for them I believe. Hard to characterise too: Big Band Jazz mixed with The Beatles, Soul, Funk, Broadway, The Band, Zappa etc. Such a classy outfit that made some of the best music of that wonderful era of the late '60s early '70s. They did some wonderful covers of Traffic, Laura Nyro, Joe Cocker, Beatles, Erik Satie etc. The second album will always be special for me. Thanks Pete.

Great review. Couple of things- Drown In My Own Tears is a Ray Charles cover, and the Classical Composer you referenced name is pronounced "Sa-Tee", not satiety. I loved that album. The production was incredible and the choice of covers was sublime. I was a Tim Buckley fan so hearing their version of Morning Glory blew me away. Steve Katz did a great job on the vocals. And you're right, there was nothing else like BS&T at the time. The CTA album wasn't released until a year later, and though they were both were horn bands that chose great songs to cover and made them their own, they were two distinctly different bands. BS&T, on the first album, at least, played a wider range of music styles, from blues rock to the bossa nova treatment of Without Her.Listening to it was a musical adventure, with every song setting a different mood. House in the Country is probably the only psychedelic/ rock/jazz song ever recorded. Al Kooper didn't leave of his own accord, from what I've heard. Supposedly, the band didn't want to become The Al Kooper Experience, so they voted him out.

I was surprised to see the Al Kooper album relegated to 6th. I just can’t see that low of a ranking for such a classic work. The tunes linger in my mind and I always hear them. The guys who started "jazz rock.' I was a big fan, though in retrospect, their music doesn't hold up as well as I thought. The second album is clearly a masterpiece. A combination of virtuoso playing with commercial success. They were also legit jazz players and that is riding high on that album. That style wasn't really addressed after the second LP, which I feel made them lose some panache'. They were never really "rockers." More of a show band. It worked for a while. And then it stopped. New Blood? That seemed to me to be so obviously the end of what they were about. Go figure.

Thanks for giving BS& T some props. They were a much better band than their sales figures indicated,My personal #1 is BS&T 3. It was blasted by critics fir being "pretentious", but it's really smart,, interesting music in my world.

Very good/legendary band, I first got exposed to them by inheriting my father's old reel-to-reel player that included a recording of their 2nd album. Agreed re: Pete's comments about Chicago, BS&T didn't rock out as much. They did tend to at times go too 'soft' for me, and also did some pretty strange covers ("Take Me In Your Arms" is pretty good though, "Ride Captain Ride" almost works, "Got To Get You Into My Life" does work). Always liked Clayton-Thomas' voice a lot, the albums New Blood through Mirror image are hurt by him leaving the band (no offense to Jerry Fisher-some of the instrumentation & songs are still good but the vocals don't quite make it for me). And the initial lineup with Al Kooper was great. Later band lineups tend more towards jazz. With a few more rock/fusiony numbers and/or less slow ballads BS&T would've appealed to me even more... My studio album rankings: 1. Child Is Father To The Man and the s/t 1969 album - a tie, 5 great tracks each 2. 3, 4, Mirror Image & More Than Ever - another tie, I like 4 tracks off each record. On More Than Ever Mike Stern joins the band. Supposedly Jaco Pastorius was also in this version of the band but I don't think there are any recordings. Also three great guest guitarists: Hugh McCracken, Eric Gale & Steve Khan. The vibe really varies on this record, a track like "Katy Bell" is kinda funky while "They" is proggy, but the rest of the album is filled with slower numbers. The expanded version adds 6 live tracks 3. New City - very mellow overall, not enough "punch" for me. Their cover of "Got To Get You Into My Life" is good plus the short instrumental "Takin' It Home" is good too. The expanded version of the album includes 3 live versions of tracks off Nuclear Blues ("Agitato" is about as close to fusion as BS&T gets) - weird live cover of Hendrix's "Manic Depression" 4. Nuclear Blues - their last (studio) album that goes for a harder sound. "Manic Depression" doesn't work for me though. "Agitato" is good & "Spanish Wine Suite: Introduction La Cantina/Theme Spanish" is their 15 minute prog opus. If you didn't know this was BS&T I'll bet you couldn't guess who it was - parts of it almost sound like Al DiMeola plus horns... 5. New Blood, No Sweat & Brand New Day - only like one track from each. Weird cover of Traffic's "Empty Pages" that doesn't quite work for me. Best song title: "Hip Pickles". Brand New Day is just too mellow, "Somebody I Trusted" is really it for me Other good BS&T: Live from LA/1980 ("Spanish Wine Suite" played live), Live and Improvised from '75 (with Stern & Khan - very jazzy, they even cover Corea's "(I Can Recall) Spain"), Live At Woodstock and Woodstock - Back To The Garden. 50Th Anniversary Experience (disk 9). Their Woodstock appearance was a 10-song set from the first two albums

Your ranking is the same as mine, except I think I prefer the first album. They both have their strong points, but the first was more adventurous, whereas the second did some smoking cover songs with incredible soloing like.Smiling Phases and God Bless the Child.
