Anyway, the ranking I don't disagree a lot with, although I would put "Beatles For Sale" as # 12 due to the number of covers, some of which aren't the best, either. "When I'm 64" and "Honey Pie" are absolute highlights in my book, I love it when Paul does his Fred Astaire voice. Also, I always thought it was the biggest flex to follow "Within You Withou You" with "When I'm 64". Like, yeah, we'll make a beautiful CIM crossover and then we'll do a music hall/vaudeville/Irving Berlin-type song and let's include a trio of clarinets in the arrangement, while we're at it. I mean that's some serious variety. Which other band could have pulled that off as effortlessly as them?

Love the aggressive songs on the first album There's a Place and Twist and Shout. Paul McCartneys bass is also key to the Beatles sound. He was fantastic. Malapropism comes from a character in an novel 1775 Sheridan in which Mrs Malaprop would mistake words and use something similar to the correct on...to comic effect. if you have the Lp of Sgt Pepper.. When the player arm finishes the last song on the run out groove there is the line "never could be any other way" that just repeats ad infinitum if you have a manual non automatic return arm player.

If my memory serves me correctly, back in February of 1963, when I was a senior in high school in South Bend, Indiana, one Saturday night when I got home a bit after 9 PM from working as a stock/bag boy in a grocery store, a DJ named Dick Biondi was on radio station WLS in Chicago. He played "Please Please Me" for the first time on any major radio station in the USA and I was hooked on the Beatles without knowing the first thing about them. Later on, after I'd graduated we moved back to Miami, FL and shortly thereafter (I finally turned 18 in November) I left my parents' home for Nashville, TN and soon I heard the album called Meet The Beatles was being released. I had a friend in the Music Dept. of the downtown store known for getting the albums first when released. I worked third shift and the day the shipment came in he called me at work so I could get to the store early and buy the first copy (which I did). I still have it along with all the rest of The Beatles albums. My favorite music still includes some classic 50s but mostly it's the 60s thru mid-80s. Long ago, I gave up trying to rank any facet of the genius that was the Fab Four. It's not worth the effort to try. However, I did really enjoy watching this video!

They're my fav band. What l love about mysic is that aftr all the amazing musicians that came before them they arrive and create a new genre of brilliant music. I think their time in Hamburg is often lost as developing their ability to be so efficient in the studio. Even after they stopped touring and treated the studio like a fifth musician. A brilliant example of musicians not at the top of their craft as individuals that when combined leaped so far ahead of everyone around them. From my many years of reading about music they are by far the most cited band as the biggest influence by those that followed. U never get tired of listening to them. Their ability to do every genre of pop rock blues is unparalleled.

Well done. Very enjoyable. Although I mist say, Magical Mystery Tour was not a UK album until much later. It was originally a double EP. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields were released before Peppers as a single and originally intended for the Peppers album. They are not truly part of Magical Mystery Tour. Also the Magical Mystery Tour album, even the UK version released in the 1970's, was put together by Capitol from copies of copies of tapes (unlike the German version, which sounds amazing). Ranking is often personal taste and for me (having been around when each album was first released) a lot depends on the impact on me and others around me at the time. For that reason, I would rank Revolver higher than Peppers (and Rain had been released from the Revolver sessions. Peppers while ground breaking was a logical extension of what came immediately before).

You have t remember that when "The Beatles" first walked into the studio, they were unknowns, and were given the lowest royalty rate that was the standard. No one knew what they would become. Their first LP, "Please Please Me," went to #1 in the UK -- and stayed there for THIRTY WEEKS, which was unprecedented. It would be replaced at #1 by their second LP, "With The Beatles," and "Please Please Me," was demoted to and remained at #2 into the next year.

Sadly, Andy, you’ve missed the mark on a number of your ranking videos; however, you nailed it here, notwithstanding your reluctance to cite Abbey Road as the greatest Beatles album, indeed, the greatest (rock) album of all time, and, yes, “The Medley,” aka “The Long One” is the greatest piece of recorded music in popular music. I was pleasantly surprised that you ranked Magical Mystery Tour at number two. Based on the lineup of songs, a strong case can be made (as long as “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” is included), but the album does sound like a compilation more than a coherent artistic statement. I also agree with you that if “Hey, Jude” had been included on The White Album that it could have ranked as high as #2, but Abbey Road is secure as the top Beatles LP and the top rock LP of all time. Finally, I appreciated your slip of the tongue in confusing - briefly - The Beach Boys and the Pet Shop Boys. I’ll take the Pet Shop Boys over The Beach Boys eight days a week. There are some brilliant songs on there for sure but take the first side where you have in a row: Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Oh Darling and Octopus's Garden. (..) Bathroom Window same thing. Those are just very average songs. Sure, if you are Beatles fan you love them but on Sgt. Pepper there is no average song to be found. How can an album with Octopus's garden on it be number one Andy?! Personally btw I would always put Let it Be in the top 3. I just love that album, and the simpler songs on there sound deep and not like filler like they do on Abbey Road. 1 Revolver: Beatles at their peak of songwriting; last album sounding like they were all working together; ground-breaking. 2 ‘White Album’: quirky, full of less popular gems. 3 Help: on the cusp of changing from the pop sound to more sophisticated songwriting. 4 Sgt Pepper’s: their very nearly album (incomplete without the 2 singles of same sessions, spoilt by a couple of McC’s piano plonkers, but still enough good songs); unique use of the recording studio. 5 Rubber Soul: just great tunes. 6 The ’67-’69 ones. 7 The ’63-’64 ones.

Well - I guess MMT always seemed like a compilation album. So I guess I never thought of it in the running for best album. But if I forget all that... not knowing that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields had been released before Sgt Pepper... I think I would agree. I've always Loved MMT and especially I am the Walrus, and of course the pre-mentioned.. Just amazing.

I don't think Glass Onion reflects tensions within the band, nor do any other tracks. The Beatles broke up because Lennon left and he did to get away from the whole Beatlemania thing. Glass Onion, like I Am The Walrus, is him mocking the futile over-analysis of lyrics and of everything else that whatever the band did was subjected to.

Not quite in agreement with all the detail… but yes. Abbey Rd no1 Absolutely. And you know what, despite having different favourites on their albums they’re so good that they’re my favourite band ever too. Even though the reasons are different… They’re that good 😄

Re: The Beatles going Country on "Beatles For Sale" because of Bob Dylan - WRONG!!! RIngo was always a huge C&W fan, George idolised Carl Perkins, and John and Paul also were huge rockabilly fans - the country/rockabilly songs they covered on this album are from their repertoire from their pre-fame days. I'm not meaning to sound mean by being critical, but it's important for people who don't know this, if they are taking your word for it - but Bob Dylan DIDN'T magically turn The Beatles onto Country music in 1964!

Excellent list! Almost the same as mine. One bone of contention is you skipped right over “Something” which is George Harrison’s greatest song. Cheers!

I would say Magical Mystery Tour is best, but I never know if it counts since I think it was more of a Britain release/collection of singles. Otherwise Revolver.

Great list! It is difficult, but I also would choose Abbey Road. The thing about them, is you have to listen to the albums beginning to end to get the whole experience

There may be some country style songs on B For Sale and on Help because they wanted to break the more into the American market

The first of a whole pile of additional posts.... In them days, the world was different in ways we cannot imagine First, you would play church halls and pubs, then when you started to make it you would do national tours on the variety circuit. A lot bands would fracture at this point due to the misreable existence of B&B living. The more talented members of a band could go onto be the backing musicians of name acts and finally shangri la, if you are good enough, you make a reliable, easy living being a session man for a record label or maybe the BBC. Some people went to Tin Pan Alley, Denmark St or the Brill building As you said, having a band that could do it all was a complete game changer, as it it made the bands a lot richer

The best album for me would be the best of Revolver and the best of Rubber Soul...and yes, I agree with your comments about Strawberry Fields.

As a child, I was so passionate about music (dad had a legendary LP collection and huge all metal amplifier and monster speakers) My sixth grade music teacher told me that the Beatles stopped making good albums after Rubber Soul and that I was tone deaf. This crushed me so hard, I never picked up a music instrument or tried singing properly again for forty years Still passionate about listening to music and writing song lyrics.

Good for you that you’re still passionate. Shame about the teacher though. I would’ve got into music earlier if it wasn’t taught so crap at school. We only ever were given ukeleles to learn train and Bob Marley songs.

I used to prefer the band's later albums when I was a teenager, but today, I can't get enough of their earlier stuff. Up until Help!, they felt like a real live band on their records, and that energy is sorely missing from their later studio creations. My favourite Beatles album is the same as yours (won't spoil it) but other than that, few are the days when I won't rather put on With the Beatles than Pepper or Revolver, etc.

You didn’t mention Doctor Robert! The groove set up at the start and Lennon’s melody with that incredible rhythm over that groove in the first verse. Second verse a lot more simplistic but that first verse should be used as a transcription exercise for students. Jazz, classical and pop.

Great video, Andy! Thanks for bringing up and explaining the whole Bernard Purdie thing; I read about this in an interview he did in Modern Drummer magazine back in the 80’s(?), and I remember getting very upset about the whole thing at the time……
