My own personal ranking of the series is: 1. Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (5) 2. Baby Cart to Hades (3) 3. Baby Cart at the River Styx (2) 4. Sword of Vengance (1) 5. Baby Cart in Peril (4) 6. White Heaven in Hell (6) Honorable mention: SHOGUN ASSASSIN I hold the 5th and 3rd films of the series the highest for the examination of the hypocrisy of the Bushido code that ruled Japan for 300 years. The 5th film especially since Itto is hired by a Clan that wants him to execute their lord for going mad and placing his bastard daughter from a concubine as his heir while imprisoning his real son. Under the code the lord's samurai cannot lift a finger directly to stop him, so they are force to hire a Ronin like Itto to fix the problem for them. But also under the code they must fight and die for their lord, so they test him to make sure he can kill them all if necessary. A similar examination of the hypocrisy of the code is seen in the third movie in the form of the ronin Kanbei and his tale of being expelled from his clan for actions that saved him lord. Now you could say that the entire series is an examination of the hypocrisy of Bushido, but I really enjoyed how the 5th and 3rd films dealt with it above the others, leading to them hold the number 1 and 2 spots. As for the rest of the films, the second came next for it's great action and memorable villains, the first came after that cause it's first half is so much stronger than it's second half. I need to revisit the 4th film and the 6th as has been noted already was where things ran a bit out of gas. SHOGUN ASSASSIN I made an honorable mention cause of it's "greatest hits" type nature. It would be fun to compare this series to the other excellent samurai film series that's based on a celebrated manga, RUROUNI KENSHIN.

Can’t argue the order you put the films in, it’s probably how I would put them. I enjoyed the series as a whole but if I’m honest, I did not care for the last film, i have to rebuy them on Dvd cause when I did own them, they were bootleg VHS, back in the day these films were hard to find. I got mine from a video shop in Los Angeles Little Tokyo in the late 80’s maybe 90-91. I really enjoyed this series. Great job. Perhaps you could do a piece on how Samurai films that were made in to Westerns and vice versa. Think that would be neat. This series made me happy I found your channel.

Trivia: Tomisaburo Wakayama played a Yakuza boss in the 1989 Ridley Scott movie Black Rain.
1. Sword of Vengeance 2. Baby Cart to Hades 3. Baby Cart in Peril 4. Baby Cart in the Land of Demons 5. White Heaven in Hell 6. Baby Cart at the River Styx My biggest problem with White Heaven in Hell is that replacement actor for the head of the evil clan doesn't have the gravitas of the original actor, and Baby Cart at the River Styx was a little too gory for me. I remember liking, unless I'm getting my movies confused, the beginning of White Heaven in Hell, where the clan hunting Lone Wolf and Cub is blowing up random people around them.

I think you pretty much nailed it. I would have put skiing ninjas higher in the rank but that's me. You made a good argument for putting Shogun Assassin #1. I just sent a copy to my son a while back but for myself I am pretty sure I haven't seen it. The first time I heard of SA was probably Tarrantino talking it up, but I know I was right on the Criterion release I was worried it would sell out, (that used to be a thing). It didn't even occur to me that SA might have an Eng dub. Arrow Streaming has a whole bunch of high quality Shaw Brothers they have both language options, also the Gamera and Daimajin have an Eng option. Like you were saying the goofy Eng dubs are so much of an integaral part of watching a Kung Fu or Godzilla, or some Spaghetti Westerns, funny how an Dub track on a Kurosawa film would be unthinkable.

Always preferred subtitles over dubbed although lone wolf in any form is highly entertaining so thanks for your list. Wakayama played Retsudo in lone wolf and child assassin on the road to hell and takahashi played itto ogami. It’s rare and not very good.

I saw Shogun Assassin at the theatre with my dad and brother when it came out in 1980. I didn't realize at the time that it contained parts from a movie I had wanted to see when I was maybe 6 or 7 called "Lightning Swords Of Death"...what kid wouldn't want to see a movie with That title? It was a lot gorier than I had expected going in it was a blast,, though. Eventually, I saw most of the series on DVD and I think the most exciting one was probably The River Styx. It had Lots of memorable action sequences and seemed the most like "Shogun Assassin".

Great review .. no way is that the best but I do understand your reasons . “O yuki no4” is the best it’s a movie about morals , honour & also the only film which shows Ogami Ito h Making a friend “some with low social status with extreme OG h social values and Honour “ all of the amazing actors and characters also make it special with a string of great side plots .. the films looks 2best to number 3 which I also think has the best scores . I hate the way shoguns assassin removed all the emotion and subtle Japanese historical & cultural pointers I feel it’s a movie about revenge and anger “While the original story line as about honour ,purpose, father son partnership ,values ,survival & finally REVENGE..but it’s not the western personal revenge..no it’s a story about the averaging the dishonour that totally disgrace a system ITO loved all that he knew as what a guess would be the AG in modern In USA’s 2023 legal system..that position was earns with skill ,cunning & strictly following the rules .

Hey Bushido Blues, I just saw your Top Movies from the 'Kozure Okami' saga or better known in the West as 'The Lone Wolf and his Cub' and I thought it was good (Although I haven't even seen one of the Bushido Blues movies). the saga, but what I have read was the manga and that was what I wanted to talk to you about). The manga is the original work and for me from my humble opinion and with the permission of Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Takashi Miike and among other great directors of this medium I tell you that there is no MORE COMPLETE or PERFECT work on Samurai than this manga already which represents Feudal Japan very well with such a magnificent story that in the end it brought me to tears and still does to this day, I would like to recommend this manga since you will not see another work of this caliber in your life and it seems superior to Any other samurai work ever done, take a look at it I think you'll like it a lot if that's what you're passionate about. Another manga that I also wanted to recommend (my second favorite) is Vagabond, a manga that portrays the life of Miyamoto Musashi (For me the best samurai in history and the best swordsman of all time) this one is more philosophical (although it is not ending because he's on hiatus) the other one is obviously about revenge.
