I loved this book! So I feel like sharing why in a few jumbled thoughts… Mariana didn’t even know who her husband truly was so it wouldn’t make sense for her to be right about the murderer. It’s even revealed the image she had of her father was unreliable. So I was able to accept she was wrong about who done it, and still have curiosity about HOW she would find out she was wrong. That was enough to keep it interesting for me. You can say Mariana is a “dumb dumb”, but I see her as grieving, troubled, vulnerable, and used. A person who didn’t receive adequate love, and as a result married someone awful. After all, the plan was ultimately designed by Sebastian, who seemed to know what wounds of hers to exploit. It’s so cruel, and for that, I do feel for her. It makes me believe that somehow the constant emphasis on her being a group therapist, and someone who admittedly was not trained to examine individuals, was meant to show that she is an unreliable judge of character, or at least had a difficult time determining what people were the real threats. In her private therapy sessions with her professor, it’s shown how deeply in denial she was about her fathers cruelty. It was only through the group therapy session with the maidens that she unknowingly touched upon her own complicated dynamic with the men she held on a pedestal…like what she said to them about pledging loyalty to people out of a love that wasn’t truly returned. I believe her obsession with Fosca was tied to Sebastian; both were charismatic men that had held so much power over vulnerable women-the girls are unable to see in Fosca what Mariana was unable to see in Sebastian. To me, that makes it even more interesting that Sebastian picked him to be Mariana’s villain. I find all the ties between mother/father figures and family/group dynamics to be entertainingly ironic. So good!
@circlepunch1911

I completely agree with you, her character is meant to be flawed. She has been constantly manipulated by both her adopted daughter and late husband, and he knows all of her weaknesses. The whole point of the book is that she's naïve. It's also not unusual that if a mother believes that their child is in danger, that they would lose all common sense and drop everything to find who is threatening their safety. Overall, I thought it was a good book but everyone has their own opinion.
@Starburst514

I was willing to put how stupid she was being to grief, I can suspend it enough or allow it if I try...but one thing I really liked was a woman protagonists grieving her husband, I personally haven't seen that a lot, usually the other way (but I don't read a lot of romances) I was so pissed at the end CAUSE other than the fact there was Z E R O evidence Zoe did it; why is God's name did sebastian have to be done like that? Can't we just once have a fictional husband who dies tragically and not be horrible trash? He was already dead! Like it was so shoe horned in, it literally made more sense for at least Fred to have been the one writing the letter if you wanted it to not be the Professor, why couldn't we just leave dead sebastian alone? Along with YEAH, that's kinda troubling if you're a therapist, meant to he intuned to trauma victims and not realizing what was going on in your own house between your own family.

Based on the synopsis, i can see the greek mythology influences with the goddess or siren vibes Mariana is giving off. Fred should have been the killer! It would have made a lot of sense. Especially when she finds a long letter, we know Fred feels more comfortable putting his words on paper - he told Mariana so! - and the author of the letter said he had a premonition when he first met Zoe - who does that sound like? - if Fred had been the killer I would have loved this good.

It's so interesting to hear different takes on that! Because I'm into mythology as well (the main thing that drew me to this book) but I unfortunately thought that this aspect was executed superficial at best - I felt like the author was attempting to use the appeal of greek classics as a 'flavouring' without ever actually diving deeper into the topic. And considering that rewritten/books inspired by ancient classics are quite the trend currently I think this one is, sorry to sound mean, quite the waste of time seeing how many better works have been published recently in this vague genre. Paired with the other flaws (I pretty much agree with every point brought up in this video) this lead me to feelin really led down and not enjoying the book in the slightest.

I feel like this biggest issue I saw in this book was that it was written with the intention of being just a classic who dunnit serial killer thriller despite carrying so many interesting and unique elements. While many people didn’t like the protagonist Mariana or thought she was a an annoying one-dimensional character, I felt like her actions and personality deeply reflects her own experiences as a child. Mariana was never able to receive the attention and care of her father as a child and her coping mechanism for this neglection was denial as her therapist says. To help herself cope she subconsciously characterized her father a healthy hardworking man in her mind. However it is also this abandonment that leads her to naively let men such as Sebastian into her life. Because he is not as neglectful as her father and seems to be one of the first males to actually seem to like her, she convulates this affection to be unconditional love, becoming blind of Sebastian’s other flaws. I also thought it was ironic and quite brilliant that she is supposed to be this excellent judge of character as a group therapist but this is her biggest flaw in reality. The concept of the maidens and Edwards obsession with Greek mythology was very interesting and it made him a rather complex character that I wish we got to see more of. In fact, if I was given more of his own point of view aside from Marianas observations of him. I wouldn’t have even minddd him being the actual killer. Now to the main issue with the book, the way it is supposed to be a serial killer who dunnit. Similar to the silent patient Michaelides struggles to develop suspects properly making the true killer often quite obvious. This also causes there to be a sort of pressure from him to give the audience a huge plot twist when he reveals the killer, which can often fall flat like it did in this book. Instead if the book had been a cat and mouse chase type thriller like gone girl, with Fosca being guilty and having his own pov, I think the book could’ve been an absolute masterpiece. The dialogue sequences between fosca and Mariana has so much tension and potential, it would’ve made for an excellent plot point. It also would’ve given us more insight into the books two most interesting and complex characters while also seamlessly embedding the Greek mythology into it.

I know it's been two years, but I just got this on sale a few weeks back and I liked The Silent Patient a lot, so . . . SPOILERS --Yeah, didn't care for this at all. The book presents all of these men to the reader as potential suspects, Henry, Fred, Fosca, the forensic psychologist dude whose name escapes me, the director who is tearing apart the set of the play one of the murdered girls was in, who just happens to be Greek, and who disappears immediately after that chapter. The chapter structure bothered me often. It sometimes felt like a Goosebumps book, where very short chapters would end on a "cliffhanger" and then the next chapter would just be a continuation of that same scene, the chapter break occurring solely so that it could end on the reveal. And the way it ties in to The Silent Patient ranged from "eh" to overtly clumsy. At one point Mariana goes back to London to talk to her therapist, who refers her to a forensic psychologist who was also a client and who turns out to be Theo, the protagonist of The Silent Patient. And Mariana finds out that he's unhappy in his current job, and happens to be carrying a copy of a psychiatric journal with her that happens to be advertising an opening for a forensic psychologist at The Grove, where the titular Silent Patient of the previous book is now institutionalized. The whole purpose of this scene is not to advance the plot of this book, but to tie it into the previous one in a way that contradicts a core element of that books plot. Then Zoe gets committed to the same institution, and when Mariana goes to visit her, she sees her. See? It's not only set in the same universe, it's a prequel and the events of this book indirectly cause the events of that one, if only by contradicting some of them.

I remember liking The Silent Patient and would be really interested to see you compare it with The Maidens. After Dan Brown's The da Vinci Code had become a huge success, I read and liked his Angels and Demons, but then I read another of his books and was so disappointed. Turns out, that third book was written (and not published) years before he became a success. I wonder if The Maidens is one of Michaelides' earlier works that he got out of the drawer and dusted off. The other possibility is he had a different editor (or none at all).

In addition to your points here, I also read The Silent Patient, and thought it was mostly fine, but it was a (somewhat shameless, in my opinion) rip-off of Agatha Christie. The author admitted he borrowed heavily from The Murder of Roger Ackroyd for the plot. In The Maidens, he did it again! This time he ripped off another Christie classic, The ABC Murders. He even references Sebastian reading that book at one point (which basically gave away the ending if you have read The ABC Murders as I have). This author is making a career of re-skinning famous Agatha Christie novels with his own flimsy plots, and I'm super over it. *Okay*, that's the end of my own rant now :p

So I'm very thankful for this rant because I heard mainly good reviews about The Maidens and I was curious to know if suddenly Michaelides had completely changed his ability to create stories or if, once again, I find myself unable to understand all of those who enjoy his books (and they make me jealous because I hated The Silent Patient with a passion and I don't need that kind of negativity in my life).

People have already said similar stuff, but I feel strangely empowered from negativity 😅

Actually i want to know what makes women characters great. How can i write such said characters that are logical as well as reactive in the situation? Entise me, I am curious.

At least for books I've not read I'm more invested in the rant reviews

After hearing lots of positive reviews about The Silent Patient, and hearing such a mixed sort of reviews of Maiden, I am unsure about picking book by this author. Although I usually love the rants (P.S. I am not a negative person, they are just good once in a while)
