The EFI VK Commodore was a very good attempt at getting more power out of the old 202 cubic inch six by Holden. It had more bottom end grunt than the automatic RB30E powertrain in the VL Commodore, the one I had to replace the cylinder head gasket on in 2004 had as much grunt as a manual 3 litre VL Commodore,it had done 200,000 kilometres, & supposedly always been serviced, the engine was smoky & the cylinders were out of round - it was shot & I pulled a litre of mud out of the sump, the 1984 model Berlina wasn't serviced that well. The fuel injected model was only available with an automatic transmission & Holden literally hotted the engine up to push an extra 20 kilowatts of power out of it,mods included a HQ racing camshaft, stainless steel factory headers & the Bosch L-Jetronic analogue computer which was fuel only, the ignition system carried over from the VH Commodore on the EFI models only. I couldn't compare it to my VL Commodore back then because it ran a hybrid RB30DE engine that I built for it using the parts off the RB25DE engine including the cylinder head, pistons & ECU,the result was an engine which was 50% more powerful. The car is sitting under layers of car covers waiting for me to restore it,the twin cam 3 litre engine is still beautifully smooth 200,000 kilometres after the rebuild. I drive my VY SS Commodore in tuned form now & the 5.7 litre LS1 V8 engine is about the same as the Nissan engine as far smoothness goes which is why I wanted to keep away from the horrible 3.8 litre Buick V6 engine. Yes,as far as the Bathurst 1000 goes,I couldn't be bothered watching it since none of the cars are Australian built, the new Commodore means nothing to me !
