When I was a senior in Highschool in 89 I went to see the Metallica "And Justice For All" Tour with the opening band that none of us had heard "the Cult" Apparently, they were a British Act that had been around for 6 years already. She Sells Sanctuary was from 1985 when the band had far more of the 1980s sort of New Wave kind of look. In any case, at big concerts it's common to assume the opening band will suck and people commonly hang out in the parking lot partying and socializing with other fans totally missing the first act. We had 5th row seats for this cobcert and wanted to secure the seats early because in those days Metallica shows were still big but not commercial to the extent they are today. That means they were far rowdier and attracted lots of bikers, working men in construction, manual labor jobs like steel workers, boiler makers, industrial mechanics as well as rowdy young metal heads. The concert was at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin and sure enough there were lots of rough looking dudes, skanky chicks, and a good percentage of all around degenerates in attendance (I am sure people would have thought the same of us but because were seniors in highschool at the end of our road for scholarships for athletics- our 7 man crew consisted of football players, wrestlers, hockey players, track athletes (we all loved to party but had signed athletic codes and 2 of the guys had recently been recruited by universities in the NCAA for football, and 2 of us were hoping to secure wrestling scholarships, one guy was working on a division 1 hockey scholarship. Being young punks we saw ourselves as legitimate and considered the other hard rock fans to be burnouts not considering we were all in the same place doing the same things. In any case, we wanted to avoid getting in trouble because we were in violation of the Athletic Code during football season. If we blew off the opening band there would certainly be guys in our row of seats. The last thing we needed was a fight, which would involve getting thrown out and possibly arrested considering our underage status, fake IDs so we could get wristbands and buy liquor at the refreshment stands etc. We made sure to arrive early and catch what we figured would be some shitty warm up band. We were mistaken. At the time the cult were not well know in the states but their image had changed with everyone sporting long hair, leather, jeans and looking more like a traditional hard rock band. They played the songs from their not yet released album Sonic Temple but they played She sells sanctuary and many of the new tunes like fire woman that sounds very similar to She sells Sanctuary. We had a blast hearing them. The problem was grunge was just 2 years away and all the pregrunge bands other than a Handful got swallowed including the cult. Underrated band

I absolutely love this story. My husband graduated in ‘91 and was a NY All State Football Player. He had offers from countless schools, but he chose the most coveted, Penn State, to play Division 1 Football. He was the Captain of the football team (obviously), but not your typical jock. He was at heavy metal concerts that were not the typical chose of music taste for the captain of the football team of Homecoming King nominees. He didn’t look for fights, but certainly didn’t back down from one - especially if it meant defending someone he cared about. Everyone knew that about him. Don’t *uck with his friends or family. So long story not so short. He had officially committed to Penn State and he knew one thing…DO NOT GET IN TROUBLE. This was his ticket out of a horrible family life and out of Long Island. In any event, someone messed with one of his family members and he didn’t just get in a fight. He put this kid in the iCU. They weren’t even sure if he was going to make it. He gets arrested and Penn State revoked his scholarship. This is one of the songs he called “songs to my wife”. He passed away unexpectedly at the age of 45 still in as good of shape as he was at the age of 18. I used to joke with him when I would hear his alarm go off every morning at 4:30 am to head to the gym before work “why do you still do this? You know there’s no big game for you tomorrow. Those days are long gone” . He would say “it’s all I have going for he, if I lose this I’ll lose you.” That couldn’t have been farther from the truth, but he was determined to never lose his “sanctuary”. Thanks again for sharing your story, brought me to tears and evoked so many emotions for me.

That's so weird, I saw them open for Metallica in '89 in Spokane as a huge fan (Love was my favorite album at the time) and I met Ian before the show at my work and he was a dick and I told the Rolling Stone photographer that and he laughed and said, you gotta get to know him. Anyway, I thought they sucked live, so much so, I stayed for Metallica and they blew my mind.

Listen to Sanctuary through a good set of headphones, the bass will blow you away! One of the best and one of the most underrated bands from the 80's....if you want to hear more, I can recommend songs like "Fire Woman" and "Rain"...you wont be disappointed!

The Cult was a vastly underated band in the 80s and Billy Duffy is an amazing musician. I remember seeing them in Jackson, MS when they warmed up Metallica (1989 I think....Sonic Temple had just come out and Metallica had not yet released the Black Album) Apparently Ian got his arse beat by Hetfield in an altercation before the concert....he did wear shade the whole concert. Killer show all around.

I enjoyed "The Cult" in my 80s & 90s years ... what a huge, and at same time, underrated rock & roll band: Ian Astbury (lead singer), Billy Duffy (guitarrist), Nigel Preston/Les Warner (drummers) and Jamie Stewart (bass), there in middle and late 80s. I really appreciate its amazing songs: "she sells sanctuary", "fire woman", "rise", "love removal machine", "wild flower", "sweet soul sister" and more !!!. Greetings from Mexico !!!.

The Cult is one of my top favorite rock bands. I've seen them live once in 2006. They all still entertained as well as when they first came out in the 80's. Ian's voice was still spot on. They sounded incredible live. They ended the show with this song.

I'm a massive Cult fan, love that you reacted to them and enjoyed Ian's showmanship. They have some really cool albums that each have their own distinct vibe. From Electric I'd suggest "Love Removal Machine", from Sonic Temple "Fire Woman", but my all time fav (and a sleeper tune) is from Love, "Brother Wolf, Sister Moon" an atmospheric tune that is really different from most of what you hear in rock. Cheers to you both, enjoy the channel, keep it up!
