The speed with which a medical team responds to an emergency situation can make the difference between life or death-and increases or decreases the odds of liability.
Here to discuss the crucial role of a rapid response team is Yulianna Fedorchak, a very experienced nurse and LNC who helped to initiate the New York Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center team.
Yulianna describes the composition of a rapid response team and the circumstances in which it’s appropriate to call on them. She points out that the culture of blame in some hospitals makes nurses afraid to make this call. Much of her work involves encouraging nurses and other medical personnel to do so.
She has noticed that in hospitals in well-to-do communities, patients’ families tend to call for minor issues; whereas those in less affluent areas are reluctant. Overall, she says that the ability to call for a rapid response team is not abused.
Yulianna also emphasizes the importance of preventive actions, i.e., addressing and solving an issue before the rapid response team is needed.
Finally, she describes what LNCs can look for in reading medical information and how accurate and meticulous charting can prevent errors and liability.
