That turned out nicely, and good job on the editing. You and Tod were chill and fun to hang out with, and of course knowledgeable. It was neat to handle a few original swords as well. @@CreationGrid Do you remember Shadiversity and The Metatron? They used to collab with these guys occasionally or do responses, were a friendly sword history youtuber group. Over time both Shad and Metatron started posted lots of 'sjws rewriting history!!!!' type stuff on their main channels and making less than savoury remarks about various groups (Shad very publicly so, including in Streams and on his reviewer side channel) so the pair drifting from the core group over time. Then when Shadiversity did a big tour of the UK he met back up with Schola, but about the same time started posting outright anti-gay content (accused all queer people of being pedos in waiting essentially) and when Schola found out he publicly distanced himself. Cue massive meltdown, so many people unsubbed from Shad he accused the sjw's of cancelling him and called for donations in support to keep him financially afloat- Schola et al all further distanced themselves from the mess except for Metatron, who publicly donated a large amount of money with a big video about the loyalty of knights to their friends, repaying favours (Shad previously did a big and public donation to Metatron when his racey content put the channel in dire straights) and sticking up for 'traditional values' Since then Schola, Tod and Skal went from 'quiet distance from Shad and Metatron' to outright condemning Shad's increasing list of inflammatory content, and quiet disapproval of Metatron's support of those views. Long story short: Watched all these guys since I was a kid, 2 stopping talking to others and went a bit alt-right conspiracy crazy and its quite sad honestly

The Spanish blades reminded me of Italian armor exports and made me wonder. How often were swordsmiths known by name in Europe, or how & how far did word travel about individual armorers? Surely a few shops became institutions for a time, if not culturally retained like in Japan
@HoJu1989
3 күн бұрын
As far as I know, the Spanish government never issued sidearms for soldiers in the 17th century (maybe at the very end). Each soldier was supposed to procure his own sword. Some specific unit commanders could ocassionally arrange for swords or clothes to be supplied from local markets if there was great need (some sources mention the soldiers being absolutely destitute and with their clothes in tatters after shipping out to Flanders), but it's usually considered an exception and a private initiative.

Curious... 🤔
@HoJu1989
2 күн бұрын
@@ChapterGrim i I think it was pretty much the standard at the time. Standardized equipment and uniforms weren't a thing until maybe the 1680s or so, except for a few select household or guard units. They provided your main weapon (musket and ammo, pike...) but everything else was up to you. The quartermasters may keep some stockpiles to cover needs but the soldiers were probably expected to pay for those items or have them discounted from their wages.

As a sculptor, I fully aggree with what you say about how they looked at those things with a more "artistic" mindset. In our modern world, specially due to mechanical tools and computers, we are used to see near perfect symmetry all the time. So, sure, we're "experts" on detecting that lack of symmetry. Back then, however, they probably just valued the overall aesthetic in the same way we still do with art, probably because they weren't used to such a great symmetry as us and thus didn't really expect it or even value it.
