Thank you for posting this! We all need to learn from each other. I'm so glad everyone went home with a great story instead of planning a funeral! It would be great to have a "NO JUDGEMENT" assessment of this so we can all learn. It is easy to make a post-mortem from one simple angle, AND I'm not a certified instructor and a novice at best, but I see that: 1. Everyone tactically related seems correctly geared and harnessed-in. Great job. 2. The rapeller had the presence of mind to brake. Great job! 3. I was taught that command/notifications are to be barked out. I did not hear any. Q: Could vocal command/notifications have eliminated the rappeller from catching the assistant's (man in full-brim hat) foot? 4. It seems as if the assistant was there to keep the rope from slipping laterally on the edge, so they recognized the potential problem, which begs the question: should a better point-of-contact been found? Miniscule hand or foot adjustments by the assistant (if in fact that was what he was doing) were no match from the combined Newton force of a full-grown man exerted on the tiny contact patch of that rope against grainy edge. So, certainly his elimination from the edge would have eliminated his fall. 4. #2 assumes a belayer: if there was one, could he have warned them of the dangers? Again - I'm glad everyone was okay (although I bet that fall still hurt); and thanks for letting us learn from this event. I leave it to experts and the more experienced to add on more discerning comment.

Its not a great setup really.. It looks like a course style setup. An instructor should've seen this coming if you go through the effort to set an abseil up like this one... It looks like an anchor made using a long static rope. The dead rope left over is made redundant to the anchor to abseil from. Another rope is added for safety. One side tied into the one abseiling, the guy in white is lowering him off him off using the safety rope whilst he is clipped into the master point of the main anchor. The dead rope used to abseil off was nicely protected with a red rope protection sleeve.. but it was clearly a useless safety feature as that rope is the main factor as to what caused this to happen! Dangerously obstructing to the rest of the instructor-student style setup tripping up the one lower on the safety line. It's looks as though the static line that the guy was abseiling off, was made redundant too far right of the anchor. It could've been placed more central in the anchor(bunny ears loops in the master point maybe). It also looks like one side of the anchor failed. It's simple to avoid this if you take a moment to think before you lower off. But just as easy to miss on hot days with big groups of people being distracted etc..

@@StoreyRexactly this is literally one of the few climbing situations that calls for judgement anybody that has rappelled even once should have foreseen this happening and I’m assuming everybody in this video either doesn’t care about safety or has no idea what they are doing

This story with a not inconceivable embellishment... Harry was instructing a client on a tricky abseil and all the mitigations for the pendulum risk failed sweeping him off the wall taking a small tumble... he struck his head on the rock and lost consciousness. His clients didn't know rope rescue or first aid and Harry died of asphyxiation because his airway was closed. RIP Harry I wish you'd worn a helmet.

@@mrcreeper479Yeah man: 4 guys who don't have a clue about what they are doing and deliberately risk their lives (and those of the emergency-helpers if anything worse goes wrong) Ask me, I'd prefer a pro alpine-educator who teaches me how to set up a rappel decently and then not to look like a complete **** because I don't trip myself with the rope (which I placed on my foot myself) when it is pulled into the position everyone could have foreseen by application of the laws of gravity and force-addition formulated by Newton some few hundred years ago!

If more people knew how to repel and the equipment was provided where needed many lives would be saved. If people in the Trade Towers would have had repelling equipment on the upper floors they could have easily repelled down to the ground. This might sound sketchy to most people, but the very equipment these guys are using is used by children such as Boy Scouts on a routine basis. And if more construction workers had repel devices where needed, they could easily get out of bad situations where ladders or stairs are not readily available. I have several of my guys trained to harness up to repel equipment when they are working in areas where they can fall through, suvh as an attic into a room with a high ceiling and I exclusively wear a rock climbing harness with a desender on the front instead of a typical fall harness. Personally, I think a typical fall harnesses where you're hooked on at the back is royalty stupid. With typical construction harnesses the line is at the back of your feet which can cause you to trip, and if you do fall off the edge of a roof and get critically injured, if there's no one on the site with the equipment or training to get you down you have to wait for a fire truck. Sometimes 5 minutes is a matter of life and death. Watch this link to a KZitem short and you'll see what I mean: kzitem.infoh42D9LBweGg?si=-BvQnRL1x6H7xk-Y

@@junior.von.claire you're correct in that respect, it's just people. If I insulted every student, they would certainly not be focused fully on what they're supposed to be learning. The only input that I would give on this setup would be that all folks on the lip should have had helmets and been attached with a handled ascender. A few lumps and bruises can enhance memory considerably. I personally would not have a student on that particular lip but each to their own...

Honestly don't know what the heck they were doing and they clearly had zero clue either. If they were attempting to rappel, they better go back to practicing. What the heck was the blue guy doing? Did none of these guys know how to get off the edge? You don't do it by walking it like this guy. They were very lucky! The blue guy is clearly inexperienced. His body was haunched like he was read for number 2. In this position, his body will succumb to the compressive forces acting on it due to gravity. You must understand that in this phase, you have to get the rope down to the ledge and your body below it so the rope can support your body. At this phase, physics tells ups it cannot support our body. All it can do is pull us into the rock face. By doing so, we increase the normal force acting on our feet from the rock face and thus increase friction which keeps the feet from sliding out. The gray guy should NOT have been there trying to hold on to it. Instead, let blue fully take the slack out by loading it. He she be near the edge, legs spread and almost straight so he can resist the compressive forces as he slowly leans back releasing a little bit of rope at a time which will rotate his upper about his feet. Because the anchor is at his feet, he'll have to keep going till he's leaning back about a 30 degrees of so. At this point, he can start to move his feey down a little bit at a time. Then release more rope, move feet down bit, and repeat till the rope is above him and is support him against the pull of gravity. At this point, the rope is doing all the work and friction is not important. His feet now act as a stabilizer only. What these folks were doing, I have zero clue. All I kmow is they were very very lucky. Glad you all came out safe.
