I don't think people understand the statement Being a guest isn't a bad thing. It just means that you recognize that rap and hip-hop was a black born genre and has great cultural significance in black culture, so white rappers are invited so long as they are respectful to the art form and to the culture they are taking part in. It doesn't mean "you don't belong here" at all. It just means what I said, and that they're not the face of rap.
@JiwanKoPani
2 ай бұрын
As nice as this sounds, you can question if this is really an attitude 'we' should be taking. Wouldn't that mean that all black and asian people are then for ever guests in the Metal genre and culture? Or that non-white people always going to be only guests in Europe?
@redtailarts101
2 ай бұрын
@@JiwanKoPani metal as a genre and culture is not intrinsically tied to whiteness the way rap and blackness are intertwined.
@JiwanKoPani
2 ай бұрын
@@redtailarts101, that is because whiteness is not a cultural unity. Neither is blackness obviously, what you are confusing for a united blackness is a generalisation of African-American with a past in slavery. And even there I would say that there is much more diversity between African-American cultures. Rap comes specifically from urban, impoverished, segregated communities. Those were not all black people, that does not involve all black people, nor is it representative of blackness. Metal was conceived and developed by white people, rap was conceived and developed by black people. In what way do either represent or tie to the people that did not conceive, develop, or explore it?
@river718
2 ай бұрын
@@JiwanKoPani incorrect, Metal was created by black musicians from Detroit, but then colonized by white musicians from the UK who had no idea that the records that inspired them were black bands from Midwestern America. June Is Black Music Month, perhaps use this as an opportunity to learn some history about Black Music…
@JiwanKoPani
2 ай бұрын
@@river718, look, fundamentally music has and is a collaborative effort. Where do you think the guitar, bass guitar, drums, and chords come from? And who developed metal after the 1960's? I would suggest you look at music generally as a collaborative human endeavour. I am not arguing that it is a white thing, I am arguing that claiming music (and culture in general) for a racial group is deeply racist and based on lies. Firstly the lie that a practice (musical or otherwise) by a subculture represents a group as broad as a race. But secondly, that a racial group means anything at all. Because it does not, it is statistically irrelevant, and predicts very little in the areas of culture, genetics, personal preferences, IQ, athletic ability, and really anything else. So black history and black music history feels a little weird to me. Because it is all just part of human history. And the "black (music) history" you are referring to is probably only American national history, isn't it? Does what I am trying to say make sense to you?
