@SD-kx1se

I agree. Maynard wants everyone to think for themselves. I also disagree. His lyrics demonstrate a mastery over subtlety. “Disillusioned” contains political themes without directly referencing politics. Everything has a purpose in his music, it feels political because it is political.
@ianbrinton
3 жыл бұрын
@@SD-kx1se I'm going off of what he said at the show I attended for the Eat the Elephant tour. "A lot of people think that this is a political album". Crowd becomes extremely loud. "If that's what it is for you, that's what it is, regardless of our intentions". Crowd continues to roar. "We just had some elections. There were some wins and losses for both sides. Something for everyone to be happy or upset about. The important thing is that we all stop pointing fingers and start listening to each other." Crowd is so loud that they nearly drown out Maynards last line. Visibly and audibly frustrated he raises his voice and says "Fucking listen to each other!" So yeah, there are definitely some songs that CAN be taken with a political bent, but you can force politics into just about anything if you try hard enough. But Maynards words and demeanor told me that he really didn't want it to be a political statement.

I might be wrong but this song came out before the invasion of Iraq by the US. And the remixed, more industrial version came out after the invasion. I like to think the reason that remix even exists is because the start of that war really vindicated the messaging of the original song.

Your on the right track. The “13th Step” is a concept album about addiction. It refers to someone completing a 12-step program and are now newly sober. They’re extremely vulnerable at this time, and they’re experiencing a “a new world order.” Unfortunately, there’s no intervention for being a horrible human being. So those who have been sober longer, the ones you want to be like, can and will take advantage of your new sobriety. You can easily become someone’s “Pet.” It’s dark AF. “Weak and Powerless” is a great song, and leaves little doubt about the album’s meaning. I’m not 100% on this, but the songs are in order on the journey to sobriety. Just for fun, the slug on the cover art only eats dead and decomposing matter.

Here's a tip to help with your interpretation of this song: This album is about addiction in no specific form. Thirteenth Step can allude to the 13 steps of gallows. It can also refer to when a veteran 12-stepper romantically preys on the newly sober. Maynard has stated that some songs are from the perspective of an addict's loved ones. Some are from the perspective of the addict. And some are from the perspective of the addictive substance, whatever it may be,

Maynard's son got background vocal credits on this song. Devo H. Keenan- think back to "H." and the line "considerately killing me", and that the song's working title was "Half full/Half empty". This song came out in 2003, just as the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were ramping up. Bush and Cheney had just made their pitch to the American people that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and we needed to go in to stop him. Many believe now that it was an excuse to take Hussein out and grab the oil that Iraq sits on. This was Maynard's criticism of that decision.

maynard wrote this from the perspective of the drug. like it offers you comfort and a feeling of protection, but it also isolates you and comes with a cost, the "counting bodies like sheep" line is reflecting on the overdoeses as this was the ramping up of the opiate crisis we are still in today, but it was also reflective of the time it was written during the bush era and as america was at the start of the war in Afghanistan. he remixed it and repurposed it to specifically speak of the bush era america.

A Song written in hopes the child or children would understand. That to stay safe at home. Never mind the Rabble(war cries) outside. The Evil ones (Government/Boogyman) don't love you like mom & dad. Listen to the rythum of the war drums. Stay ignorant to the knowledge of the evil. Go back to sleep safe and warm. In recovery rooms, the '13th step' is not relapse. Relapse is actually 'accounted for' in the 12 steps. Being '13th stepped' on, is when an 'old timer' (someone who's been clean for a minute), gets a hold of a newcomer who's either newly clean (or still using) and uses the newbie for sex. Many times the old timer will even play on the newbies addiction and offer drugs or money. It's a total power play on the part of the old timer, akin to a pedophile grooming children. The newbie tends to have their heart and trust fucked up to the point where it sends them back into a spiral of active addiction, and has the potential to cause untold damage to their ability to get, and stay clean. Now listen to the song again, with this in mind. Take it from an addict who's been through it.

This song is written from the perspective of the DRUG/S, it's speaking to him telling him just stay comfortable, put your head down and go back to sleep..."I'll protect you from a will to survive and a voice of reason" "One and the same I must isolate you, Isolate and save you from yourself" ..In my opinion it's the Addiction 'speaking' to him, that's what this whole album is about!

This was released during the Gulf War, so yeah it’s very political.

To me, that song is about one of two things. One is an abusive cult leader talking to one of the cultists. You know these cults where there's one man who convinces a group of followers that he's a prophet or some such, keeps them locked away and abuses them. They usually take many wives that give them children who are born into this cult world and know nothing of the outside world, so I think it's one of these children that the leader talks to here. The words in the beginning "step away from the window", they mean that the child should not look to the outside world - just stay in this small cult world, "safe and ignorant". The other meaning I drew keeps the line of substance abuse, but with the perspective of the drug itself talking to the user. It tells the user basically "hey, I am all you need in life, I am the solution to all your problems", and the "Boogeymen" in this metaphor are people around the user, friends and family, who try to help him get better and ditch the drugs. Metallica for example has a few songs about drug use in which the drug talks to the user, such as "Master of Puppets" and "Sad But True".
