Yes, as some people already said, Gojira is the Japanese name for Godzilla. As far as Power Rangers, technically the inspiration for the Dragonzord and the giant monsters came from the Toho kaiju, but Power Rangers itself uses stock footage from a long running Japanese series called Super Sentai along with American actors.

Hey guys! So glad you got to my suggestion. I was hoping for you to react to the live version of this one but it's totally fine, studio version is still amazing and I can tell you guys really enjoyed it! Gojira are one of the best live metal bands so a lot of the time listening to the live version can be even better than the studio version! So first of all, yes their name is absolutely supposed to be the Japanese pronunciation of Godzilla. Their name actually WAS Godzilla until they had to change it for legal reasons, so they chose Gojira! These guys have been around since 1996 and this song is off of their 2016 album "Magma" so they've been around for a little bit now. Mario (the drummer) is often referred to as one of the best metal drummers doing it right now so you are right to praise him so much, haha. Also, Mario and Joe (guitarist / vocalist) are actually brothers! And trust me, there is a reason that these guys get suggested to you so much, they are one of the most recognizable names in modern metal. They have an almost infinite amount of incredible songs it seems like so I would love to see you guys go down their rabbit hole more! Personally I would suggest either "Flying Whales" or "The Art of Dying" next from them! And to answer your last question for me, I think the Tool comparison is definitely fair but as far as I know Tool is not that big of an influence on Gojira's music, at least compared to some other bands. This album that this song is on was a bit of a shift in Gojira's sound to a bit of a softer place overall. Their earlier stuff has much more death metal influence and they have kind of moved from that into more progressive rock territory, and I can definitely see the Tool vibes in some of their stuff. Both have incredible drummers, good grooves, and vocalists that are capable of the softer and more intense styles, especially in Pray. I'm really glad that you guys enjoyed this and can't wait to hopefully see some more Gojira in the future!

If you want to hear more of Mario's great drumming I recommend: Love, In the Forest, Remembrance, Where Dragon's Dwell live at Hellfest, Esoteric Surgery. Mario is more acurate than an atomic clock. I'm a drummer myself anf after years of practice you can feel the rhythm. I don't count anymore, it just feels right...and I listen to the guitarist ;) But to be serious, I don't think about the stuff I play anymore because when I think about it, I make mistakes, I just play and let it flow. It's interesting that the body can remember so many movements.

A bit of info on the drummer Mario Duplantier. There are multiple Gojira songs that have actually derived from drum exercises. These songs start out as patterns and rhythms that he comes up with and the rest of the music is then written and structured around Mario. Pray actually being one of them. Explosia, Esoteric Surgery, The Art of Dying are some other examples of this just to name a few. Lastly, you guys are probably going to see a ton of comments stating that you guys should have done the live Red Rocks version of Pray. Gojira are awesome as it is but their live performances are very much legit. You guys rock man! 🤘🏻

Prog doesn’t just mean polyrhythms although they are very common amongst bands considered prog, progressive just means doing things different. Many bands who aren’t particularly technical are quite prog such as the deftones and system of a down it is their uniqueness and originality that makes them proggy not intricate and or complex musicianship although of course they are brilliantly skilled. Some prog could be simplistic just out there for example although pantera are a very classic kinda dirty metal band the song “walk” could be considered a prog song because the usage of just two chords is so experimental and unique. More mainstream sounding rock can also be prog such as queens of the Stone Age. Remember classic prog such as rush and floyd could be catchy and soft. Much love my brothers peace
