Very personal relation to this song; 5 years ago I found my 31 year old son in the floor next to his computer chair, at 12:45 am; he was sitting in a meditation pose ( he was a Buddhist), chin down on his chest, and at first I thought he had fallen asleep. I moved to wake him and discovered he wasn't breathing. I did cpr, called 911, they rushed him off to the ER, where he was pronounced dead of a heart attack. He had been sick for a year with heart and lung damage after going into respiratory arrest at alcohol rehab during detox. So his death was not unexpected but I was in denial that he had become so ill; he was my only son, I loved and love him fiercely still. I will never truly get over his death. But when I went hours after his death to shut down his desktop computer I discovered that the last thing he'd pulled up on screen and watched was the youtube video of "Stairway to Heaven." One day weeks before he died he grabbed my hand as I was walking by him and told me, " You're going to have to let me go, Mom; I've stayed this long for YOU because I know how hard it's going to be for you; but I'm so tired, Mom." I couldn't bear it, instead of just sitting and being with him I was in denial that he was dying. So I truly feel he knew he would die that night I found him, and he listened to that song both for comfort and courage and also as a personal message for me not to worry about him, that he was going on his own stairway to the next place. And then he settled himself in the floor in his usual meditation pose and prepared his soul to go. I feel that to my core, and ever since then this song has a spiritual meaning for myself and my son Daniel and the bond we had. I am 58 now, and he would have been 36 this year.

I think most of it is tied into Welsh mythology and folklore. I think I heard somewhere that Plant was reading a book about that at the time. I know the song references the May Queen which is supposed to represent the coming of Spring. The other lyrics seem to fit with the idea that they describe a Spring festival celebration (the piper, the smoke through the trees, the shining light). If you’ve ever participated in something like this or read on the subject it will seem to make a lot of sense. Again, I am only speculating. The lyrics also remind me of the classic movie The Wicker man (the original version) where a policeman goes to an island where the inhabitants use the same pre-Christian laws and celebrations. The movie references a lot of those elements of folklore.

Also, the man with the lantern on the album, is the HERMIT in the TAROT DECK. And the symbols, are pagan symbols. He was reading a folklore book (Welsh I think) and it has a lot of that mixed into it. The May Queen, is the personification of Spring and pagan folk festivities such as dancing the May Pole. The bustle in the hedgerow is the basically when the groundhog decides it's spring In the natural world & starts preparing for Spring and rebirth, which is nothing to be alarmed by. (Animals rustling about making babies, etc... 😉) "Don't be alarmed now. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen." The preceding verse says: “And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune.. Then the piper will lead us to reason, And a new day will dawn For those who stand long And the forests will echo with laughter” This is reminiscent of Pan, the god of nature, who plays his piper & is safeguarding a lost otter and who is described as “the Friend and Helper”, and enchants those with “intoxicating melodies”. Pan wipes their memories of seeing him, in order to preserve their “mirth and pleasure” so they can remain “happy and light-hearted”. The song goes on to say: “Your head is humming and it won't go - In case you don't know. The piper's calling you to join him. Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow?” The goddess of Spring and the god of Nature (the Piper) are forces of good who draw people away from the mundane life of toil (like searching for material happiness) and leading them instead towards laughter and pleasure.

One thing to remember is that among'st other things The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings heavily influenced Jimmy Page's imagery in this song - and many of the lyrics can be tied directly back to those books. It's easy to see references to Elves, Galadriel, The One Ring and numerous other Tolkien creations in it and other songs lean even more heavily into those mythologies. Tolkien was especially loved by British counter culture in the 60's and early 70's and I think Page is trying to use the same sort of imagery to create a feel in this song. So a lot of the lyrics are simply book references but are book references to a hidden world - even in the books most people don't really understand Elves & Dwarves and Magic and Page had a great interest in things beyond the mundane. A ton of Led Zeppelin songs embrace Magic, Mysticism, Mystery, Myth and Medievil history. I think for people growing up in WII and the Post War era in Britain it was very grey and lacking in much joy and beauty which is why they embraced Rock & Roll so readily and Page wanted to take that even further and create little worlds in some of his songs - it's less about the actual meaning and more about creatign somethign that isn't dull and grey and boring.

A little history, Jimmy Page was a top session guitarist in the 60's. Joined the Yardbirds as the bassist (!). When Jeff Beck left/fired he became the lead. As original members left the band, Page brought in replacements; Robert Plant, John Bonham, & John Paul Jones and toured as the New Yardbirds! The original members stopped Page from using the Yardbirds name, as they owned the name. Page came up with Lead Zeppelin, but changed it to Led Zeppelin, as he thought people would mispronounce Lead. FYI years later Plant was asked about what the lyrics meant and he said I don't know, it was written to sound good not to mean anything.

(Key part) when she gets there she knows IF THE STORES ARE ALL CLOSED, WITH A WORD SHE CAN GET WHAT SHE CAME FOR"..Then "there are 2 paths you can go by but in the long run,, theres still time to change the road you're on".I never really thought about it until Stairway was played at my brother's funeral along with a powerpoint show full of pictures..He died from an overdose of heroin

But Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Jon Paul Jones, and John Bonham are each icons.

Led Zeppelin's 1971 rock classic "Stairway to Heaven" Lyrical Meaning. The lyrics take some pretty wild turns, the song has many different interpretations and imagery! The 3 most accepted interpretations are as follows.. The main interpretation of the song is about a woman’s Greed n power who is in denial. This woman who got everything she ever wanted in life is selfish and is a person lacking of heart and disposition. She lives without sharing or giving back! She does what she pleases and buys what she wants when she wants throughout her life! According to Robert Plant “The first verse is based on the tale of an old materialistic and selfish woman towards the end of her life.” It is clear that this individual equates “heaven” with shopping. Apparently even if “stores are all closed”, she can still get access to “what she came for” “with a word”, insinuating that she is so powerful and wealthy that with just a phone call, the shops will be opened for her. Furthermore, She goes about her life accumulating her riches n money, only to find out (from the piper and narrator) the hard way at the twilight of her existence that her life had no meaning and all her gold money and riches will not get her into heaven. Still… she is in denial! Wont listen… And even tho she has time to rectify her life she is stubborn set in her ways… and still thinks she can buy her way into heaven no matter what She has done or not done throughout her life. Within the second verse. While she is pondering her life “In a tree by the brook”, She stops n listens to the beautiful song of a songbird n thinks about her life but She has doubt and apprehension of heart and mind. “there's a songbird who sings Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven” The song brings about the passing of time or the passing years in the ladys life. The song brings up the character of the “hedgegrow” which in reality is a long linear bush like Hedge that divides two fields. The “hedgegrow” can be perceived as your path in life Dividing the good field n the bad field, salvation or damnation. The “Bustle” is the ramifications of your actions taken. “Spring clean” A cleansing or transition like the seasons or years passing. “May queen” is a connotation about fertility and the advent of Spring. “If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now It's just a spring clean for the May queen. “Yes there are two paths you can go by” Again referencing to the “hedgegrow.” Path Eventually Then the song premonitions To the greedy woman with references to the piper… The concept of heaven is again brought up though implicitly, as in people having a choice to choose between “two paths” upon which to tread. And once again, “the piper” is present, this time as someone who is “calling you to join him”, as in follow the same path that he is on. And apparently these same people who are on the right path referred to in the third verse as “those who stand long”. The story being told in this section is that if these individuals have a mutual desire to do good n get to heaven “the piper will lead (them) to reason”. The “Trees” is a connotation for human beings. And instead of the trees burning or people damned to hell, “smoke through the trees”, “the forests echo with laughter”. Or people are happy in heaven. It is never specified who “the piper” actually is Though it seems to have a religious reference. I like the fact The greedy lady is told.. there is still Time for her to get to heaven if she changes her ways… then the songwriter drifts into a dream-like world where he describes beautiful, magical occurrences to end each line with a form of truth like, “Lady cant you hear the wind blow” “there's still time to change the road you're on” “your stairway lies on the whispering wind” Moving on.. Still even tho she realizes she cant get into heaven The lady is stubborn set in her ways and wont listen to reason.. Hence “your head is humming” the narrator is talking to her again.. “ and it won't go”, As in you wont listen… “in case you don't know” As if to say im telling u in case u dont know. “The piper's calling you to join him” Change your ways n follow the piper. “Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow” As in wake up n smell the coffee. , “and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?” The final verses The piper has his group of do gooders with him and is leading them onward.. “And as we wind on down the road” “Our shadows taller than our soul” Walking with a purpose casting a big shadow “There walks a lady we all know” The old greedy lady who didnt want to change. “Who shines white light and wants to show” Who is trying to justify and wants people to know… “How everything still turns to gold” Again thinking she can buy her way into heaven The last verse Is about the people Who heard the pipers warnings and heeded his advice and realized what path “tune” to take… “And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last” Next is.. We are all in this together! “When all is one and one is all“ “that's what it is “To be a rock” and not to roll, To be good just and strong like “a rock” “not to roll” fall off, give up or waver…

I suggest listening to Kashmir or listen to Zepplin's No Quarter. Try to compare it to Tool's. This was one of my mom's & mine's biggest debate. Which is better. R.I.P. Mom ❤🌹

Anyhow… In closing In my opinion.. without overanalizing “Stairway to heaven” To me personally. Its a journey of life leading to our alls eventual death! tells a story of a woman who valued the wrong things in life. She made so much money only to be told again to change her ways if she wanted heaven.. realizing that her life was meaningless even with all her wealth, and she won’t make it to heaven. She wouldnt listen to reason was In denial til the bitter end. Good lesson for us all! Stairway to Heaven” brings to our attention the hard truth that true happiness in life derives not from accumulating material possessions. But the impact and goodness you can bring the world and your fellow man. In some respects, the song can be seen as a call to give back. To make an important contribution in peoples lives. to the displaced the poor, needy, society, etc. It can be seen as an allegory for one's journey through life, and the search for meaning and understanding! Of course, the religious and mystics among us might find it the perfect nudge to consider the afterlife because it matters when one has been blessed with many and much in life. Thanks 2 all 4 da time. B.F. “For those about to Rock, We Salute You”

I have read various people's interpretation of Plant's lyrics for Stairway To Heaven and one of the most interesting was aligning them with the heroes of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, which may have more than a hint of truth to it as Plant was heavily into Tolkien. For me, I've always viewed this song as about a woman who is either a drug addict, trying drugs for the first time or upping her drug experience and she either takes too much by accident, or on purpose, and is on the brink of an overdose and possibly death. She may be buying a stairway to heaven. '....There are two paths you can go by but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on....' We have freedom of choice but with those choices sometimes come (dire) consequences.

3:25 Symbols? I think you probably mean 'sigils' (most likely in the context of family seals or signets rather than magic or occult runes... but then rumours about Led Zeppelin abound).

Robert Plant spent much of the '70s answering questions about the lyrics he wrote for "Stairway." When asked why the song was so popular, he said it could be its "abstraction," adding, "Depending on what day it is, I still interpret the song a different way - and I wrote the lyrics." The lyrics take some pretty wild turns, but the beginning of the song is about a woman who accumulates money, only to find out the hard way her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven. This is the only part Plant would really explain, as he said it was "a woman getting everything she wanted without giving anything back."

The statue you talked about (4:00) is really a tarot card ! The Hermit (IX) is the ninth trump or Major Arcana card in most traditional tarot decks. It is used in game playing as well as in divination.

I think wealth in itself can't buy you happiness, but poverty sure can make you miserable despite of all the authentic happiness you may have found. Having at least enough not to worry all the time, buys you the opportunity to focus more on whatever good stuff fills your life with true joy... So: No. But also: Yes. To an extent. As an enabler. By the way, great idea for an angle to approach this particular track!

knowledge of one self is most important to find hapiness what you love what you like what you hate what you kinda dont like and slowly start barring off the bad vibes you can out of ur life , money amplifies , so if you know what you like ur good u have something you love doing holding you afloat but if you dont know who you are and dont know what you like you will spend it on everything and anything and then what usually happens is 1 of 3 things .. people lose themselves in the confusion, some pull themselves out through some kind of isolation dave chappelle for example or good influences in their lives pulls them out of said confusion ...writing this was therapeutic somehow .. felt like sharing

How Stairway to Heaven was written. This is a link to James Patrick Page explaining his thoughts on the composition. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pXqlmnd3amV9lY4 He refers to Johann Sebastian Bach having an influence. You were right in your video Jimmy Page is a shy man in real life and would rather his music spoke for him. He admits his shyness in interviews which exist on KZitem.

While the lyrics to this song flow perfectly with the music, they are to some extent just word salad. He (Robert Plant) incorporates a lot of pastoral images, and mythic references, but this song is essentially meaningless as a whole unit. Don't dig too deeply, just enjoy the beauty of this magnificent work of art.

Y'all have to check out Anne and Nancy Wilson of Heart, covering this song, honoring Zep at the Kennedy Honors. The 3 remaining members are there watching and enjoying the show. John Bonham's (the drummer) son Jason is playing the drums with them. It is one of the greatest covers ever.

Money will bring temporal happiness, not lasting happiness. The external search for happiness is fleeting momentary happiness, to be truly happy, we need to let go of negative thoughts, it's simple yet difficult.

Regarding "buying the stairway to heaven": I Guess there is a 3rd way to look at this. Maybe it is easier to go to Heaven in some ways if you're rich - as in, you can donate money, you wouldn't have to perhaps steal or do bad things to keep surviving? I heard that before you could Pay for like nuns to pray for your soul in the olden days so you could go to heaven without actually doing Good? Maybe I am overthinking this
