I got an offer from YMCMB back in 2015.. I was homeless back then.. they thought they were taking some kid off the street and gonna do what they wanted with him.. they got ahold of some footage of me rap'n and got my contact info from the videographer.. I was in LA auditioning for a web series that did cyphers called Team Back Pack.. the held a contest.. that where I met the videographer.. we exchanged number and he said he had connections .. had someone act as my manager and reach out to him about the contacts he was talking about sharing.. couple months later .. I get a text from a rep from the label.. Rafael Hicks.. did a background check on him to make sure he was actually employeed by the label.. he was.. so we began to talk about flying me out to Dallas and having a meeting.. He wanted to pay me to be on a collaboration album .. I decided to bluff them and asked for them to send me paper work .. I said I wanted my lawyer to look over any contracts (I didn't have a lawyer) .. once I brought up having a lawyer look over contracts communication slowed down.. and I had a guy feeling it wasn't where I needed to be so I changed my number ..

This explains a lot. A man becomes rich(capital records) finds vulnerabilities/new opportunities within the sect. He catches a big fish(birdman)(cashmoneyrecords) and pays him well to find more vulnerabilities in the sect and exploit. I now see why Birdman does what he does, he has to pay universal first, then himself, and then the artist. Anyone would do the same from a business standpoint. Especially if you commit to a certain type of lifestyle. Great video man.
@MikeMars-

As an artist you have a choice. Go independent, and hope you have a big enough fanbase, and know enough people to make money. Or sign with a label, and get help with advertising, marketing, and label mate features, but give a big percentage to your team. My opinion, you only attempt to go independent, after letting a label create a fan base, introductions to DJ's/Club owners, and relationships with other artists. The most successful independent artists are still tied to a deal, and worked with a major label at some point in their career.

As a songwriter from back in the days in new orleans I have been following the music business for over thirty years I learned every thing I could read books by some of the top attorneys in business and from what I see is these rappers sign contracts with out legal counsel you need to have good lawyers to represent you and you need to make sure they gave a good track record the music business is very complicated so you need to have good legal council.

If somebody came from the hood and been struggling from nothing, a few thousand seems like a million dollars to them. Also some people can’t/don’t think they can keep progressing without getting that financial backing and exposure without a label. You’d think every single person would say no to a label, but if I were to put myself in an artist shoes and I have 10k followers for years but it isn’t growing at all, I would be contemplating signing too. Seems like a real tough spot to be in. Do you do it on your own so you get all the profits and all the control, but risk losing the momentum you have and coming to a stand still not getting any further, and not knowing if you eventually will get further, or do you sign to increase your chances of getting bigger, get some money instantly, but risk losing more money in the long run and losing control of when you drop.

A lot, if not all, of these guys and gals signed record deals when they were very young. They don't really know what they are signing and as long as the checks are coming in the mail they don't question it. A record exec throws them a very small fraction of what they are actually entitled to out of his own pocket while keeping any and all money that the music actually generates. The record label then repays the exec with interest from the money that the artist is generating. Everyone is making money.....except for the artist

50/50 joint venture with 100% control on my end. NO 360 Deals!! However, if the label help me get the job/bag then yes they can get a cut, but not if I secured something myself. I would probably want to sign with a parent company too instead of 2 and 3 labels under the parent company. Also, I need all of my publishing or most of it such as 85/15 or 90/10. It’s still a business on both our ends and honestly as an artist gotta make sure things go our way.

notice that all these rappers get swindled when they are young, like when priest molest young alter boys. Its always more profitable to own your own business and rights to your music. They just did not get advice on how to go about it. look at AKON. He designed his own money and own a small country or something, they should have went to him for advice.

The quick answer... NO, I don't feel bad for someone who didn't read what they signed. It's also hard to feel bad for someone who makes millions, regardless. Touring, merch, side ventures where they receive most, if not all of the profit. There are still MILLIONS to be made by these artists. Typically we find that once they get out of their deal, they move to a better label or go independent. IF they're lucky, their music will still be poppin' when that time comes. My only advice would be to not blow the only money you are receiving from these labels on jewelry and cars. Open a business that makes you that money back and then some.
@Tmszka

The reality is that deals with big labels are 20/80 if youre lucky, probably less than 20, but then u gotta give the producers and songwriters and u end up with 10 points on a good day, and that has to make your advances back first, before u see any money

People need to learn their craft and what their contracts contain. So many people take what they are given and don't question it. People usually only bother with you if you can help them. Know your worth and understand throughly what you are signing. Ask questions and get the answers to things you don't understand. It's business not friendships, even if they say you will be part of the family. Everybodies work ethic is not the same and they may not be able to produce high quality material year after year. It's a lot of variables that goes into contracts.

I get it; they're young, eager & hungry. It's hard to criticize any of them for signing what they signed. Labels count on you focusing on the nice signing bonus as opposed to the percentage split & other details. This is why an education in business is vital.. Learning & understanding the verbiage of the contract is critical for residual earnings.

Any musician, no matter the genre, shouldn't sign a damn thing until it's been looked over by a competent contract lawyer who has nothing to gain. I can't believe these young rappers haven't learned from Ice Cube's NWA decision not to sign his life away.
@Burrgametate
4 жыл бұрын
they'll just sign the next joe if that happens. Making money in the music business takes content, and the world isn't short of rappers. Hell I bumped into three rappers typing this comment LOL. The labels have the power of marketing an artist by throwing money at any media platform in the world. Travis Scott, Billie Ellish, Chance the Rapper, all these people were created with marketing dollars, and outsourced talent. If an artist has a big following before siginng, then they have more to bargaining power.

FYI.... That paycheck they pay you when u sign on...you do HAVE to pay it back...so if your album flops you end up being screwed in the end. All that jewelry, clothes, houses, and music videos...etc... You end up broke. They control your music and they can shelf you if they want another artist to shine. Why would you sign to a record label if they only would make a deal with you if you already created a buzz and a fan base all by yourself??? Continue being independent and make your own money like Russ Diemon did and if you're gonna sign make it a 50/50 deal if anything and have a lawyer check it out before signing. Btw....if you're signed to a label...you cant call yourself "Independent".
