Listen closely when Adam descends through the pitches- just before 1:32 the "missing" partial ( Bb inside the bass clef staff) is played. That Bb is missing on an Eb Alto, because the low Eb is an alto's pedal range. In the case of this instrument, because it's an octave lower, that partial _does_ exist. T3 on a Bb trombone with F valve gives you a low Eb, but the Bb above that can also be accessed, which is (or should be) true in the case of this contra.

What beautiful instruments! This is an area that has not been explored so much--playing music from Sousa's and Pryor's time on instruments in use then--and, collectors seem to overlook these, which means that they might be an excellent investment for someone. As for the "bright sound": maybe this is just something that our ears would need some time to adjust to? I'm sure that the masters of Elkhart knew exactly what they were doing. Beautiful restorations, Mike! Congratulations! And, thanks to Adam Rainey for being game enough to show them to us!

As I think about it, The E flat bass must have 8th position to play a low A flat. Right?

Just using logic that should be a Eb Bass Trombone.

The Eb contrabass reminds me a bit of the ancient Soviet-era made-in-Leningrad/St. Petersburg three-rotary-valved tubas that we start our beginners on here in eastern Europe. I wonder if it had any use/application in a British brass band setting, if someone commissioned this to supplant their G bass trombone? (Maybe it better matches up with the EEb tuba there.)

One more thought. I am going to guess that the double slide is from a BB flat contra bass and Conn made a bell section to tune it to E flat.

so just to be 100% clear. the partials (low to high) go as follows; Eb, Eb (octave), with no Bb in between the two. correct??

harmonic series: fundamental, P8, P5, P4, M3, m3, m3, M2, M3, m2, m2, m2, m2. so correct, no Bb in middle of those Ebs. in Eb trombone, Eb, Eb, Bb, Eb,.... it does have Bb on the 2nd partial. if in doubt pick up an alto trombone and play a natural slur up

Yes he missed a partial. The lowest note he played was about an A flat. In the pedal range for a b flat trombone. He did not play any pedal notes on that instrument. It is clear he just picked it up and was unfamiliar with the positions and the partials. It has a great sound. The instrument appears to have all 7 positions unlike many of the single slide, no valve F bass trombones. I would like to know the bore, bell size, model number and if the slide is dual bore and of course the mouthpiece. I would call it an E flat bass trombone. I wonder who bought it?

it sounds like the double slide yields the Eb bass an extra position or two
