One of a kind--but she was INCREDIBLE when she and Big Tiny Little played two-piano duets on Lawrence Welk shows!

Yes she is…. I didn’t realize who she was until the 90s probably even though I was born the year after she left Lawrence Welk in 1970z

I’ve been a Jo Ann Castle fan since the early Lawrence Welk shows. I only watched the to see/hear her play...and the small Traditional Jazz Combo that sometimes played with her. quite a BONUS on the Finish!!

The 4 Leaf Clover song by Jo Ann Castle (with live early footage of her when in her prime) got removed from KZitem. Can't find it on Vimeo or DailyMotion either! *Sniffle!*

This must have been before she started with Lawrence Welk. I doubt if Welk would let her perform on another show while on with him.

It was interesting that Spade would use the terminology "Beat this thing half way to death".

She just sparkled with vitality and brilliantly tinkled those keys. It is almost like she is from another era entirely.

Lucky she chose the Lawrence Welk show because he is known and his Tv show went on into the 1970’s. But who was Spade Cooley? Also try to get a show on tv in the 1960’s civil rights era or later with a name like Spade.

Spade Cooley was a legend in his time. One of the kings of western swing... he wrote the song "Shame on You", a Texas Swing standard. He was also an actor, having appeared in 38 western films. Sadly .. he was convicted of brutally killing his first wife, Ella Mae Evans, and sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole in 7 years. (But hey .. he was well connected)

Jo Ann Castle could have wiped the floor with Art Tatum. Tatum is nothing compared to her.

You are ill informed at best. I worked with her and the welk band. She was a better accordion player than welk, but floren and welk got the air time on accordion so she played her bar room piano things on that show. She should not be compared to Tatum in the least.

@@billhatcher9303 she played real music and could have taken Tatum to pieces. Maybe not with a few snob jazz fans but with the general public. The general public would not care about all the flashy runs and melodic digressions Tatum plays. His music is just flashy technique without much real music. Jo Ann Castle was a virtuoso playing real great ragtime the public can relate to and like. They had Scott Joplin music in the Sting and not Art Tatum. I have liked early jazz and ragtime my whole life and had an early jazz radio show for 6 years. I am not afraid to speak out against Art Tatum’s junk music. In the 1940’s there were courageous early jazz fans called mouldy figs who were not afraid to call Tatum junk which is what it is. I am not afraid of modern jazz or Tatum. The general public has rejected that music. Early jazz was listened to by a majority of the public in the 1920’s. How many people listened to Tatum or even knew who he was in the 1940’s. Probably less than 1% of the population.

@jazzguy1927 Horowitz would disagree with you. He said that Tatum's mastery of the piano exceeded his own.
