Judo and aikido came after jujitsu. They are in fact largely derivative

@UrineArtist LOL! People constantly comment on how Judo and Jujitsu people can't fight without a gi, then when you see a demonstration in actual street clothes (of the time), people are still lame enough to criticize. Can't win.

That's it? Care to qualify that statement? Maybe produce a counter-argument? L PS For the record, Judo comes from Jiujitsu--the striking and more violent aspects were removed by Kano to allow it to become a sport. Ah, wikipedia and google are wonderful things. What a wonderful internet it would be if people only took 2 minutes before posting and did a little research. You're Welcome.

Olympic style judo is primarily throws, about 90 percent, however "Kodokan judo" is more 50/50 between throws and grappling and includes "atemi waza"{strikes} as well.

I don't know if you know, but alot or even all the things seen in judo...was taken from Jujutsu. Kano just wanted a safer way to spar and compete...and what I'm also heairng is that Kano took aspects form other jujutsu schools and combined it...thus making judo with safer ways to spar and compete. Taking out finger locks eventually.

never compare judo and jujitsu? Maybe you need to research your info a little bit but they are the same shit. the only differance is the rules dude and jujitsu focuses on Newaza and Judo focuses on Randori, but they both have the same tools and the ability to be equal in any stage of fighting depending on what they want to focus on, Judos rules are a little restricting to jujitsu, bet to say that judo is far inferior is silly.

It's funny but you never hear about women getting mugged and so on back in the 1920s, 30s, or 40s...But they must have felt the need to make a film about self defence. My old grand father who lived in Hanworth, West London kept a club under his bed back in the 1930s. So they must have had concerns about intruders and being burgled back then too.

Iuno, fully about that. I thought jujutsu was something studied by the japanese that required very little strength. Because the samurai's wanted to kill or hurt their opponent quickly and with less exertion (might be spelled wrong). Maybe that's why some of the statues you see of samurai's are kinda fat...but then again I could be wrong...very wrong lol.

We're told that Judo beat Ju Ju Jitsu in 12 out of 15 matches. We need to remember that Ju Jitsu is not a sport- so the set up of the matches would obviously have favoured Judo. Half the techniques in Ju Jitsu are illegal in Judo. I found Ju-Jitsu much more practical as a means of self defense.

This is not Edith Margaret Garrud. The film appears to be from 1937 (www.hellotasty.com/it/8F8rtzXIRSk/Watch_Free_Video_Recipe_Bob_Gregory_Aka_Woman_Judo_Self_Defence_(1937).html), so it isn't Edith Garrud - she was born in 1872, so would have been 65 years old when this was filmed. Edith was awesome though!

And alot...not all of the moves in judo can be found in some of the schools of jujutsu. It seems they took out the striking aspect to practice with partners but left it in their kata, and took out the stuff that can be harmful when sparring and during competition.

I would say more like 2/3rds of the techniques in traditional Jujutsu are illegal in Judo and not even practiced in Judo dojos. People seems to forget that Judo was devised by Jigaro Kano who removed most the extremely dangerous techniques. Judo, despite being less dangerous than Jujutsu, can still be lethal if the techniques are applied in that manner but that is not the point of the art which is why it was highly adaptable to athletics and eventually became a sport.
@flashart

As you say- Judo was designed as sport, with rules allowing everyone to compete - regardless of where they came from. Ju Jitsu evolved from the need to defend oneself - often against stronger or armed opponents. As such centres more on the Dirty B*stard style of fighting. This video always makes me laugh. ;)
