Jack was the best. I can close my eyes and see his face, his expressions, and Heifetz played along, who knew he had comedy chops as well as being the greatest violinist of his day. This always makes me laugh. I was lucky enough to grow up with his TV show. A great, generous, gentle man.

I just love the comedy of Jack Benny. I still listen to his show on my tape walk man. Just great straight comedy. Fantastic.

Benny was such a craftsman -- able to take a simple premise and make it very, very funny. He was a master at letting the audience in on the joke. Interestingly, he owned a Strad for years.

I used to watch the Jack Benny show when I was 4yrs old. He is the one who inspired me to play the violin. When I was in 3rd grade, I started playing violin and I learned thru the Suzuki method.

It is remarkable to me that Benny was able to control his nerves to this degree where he was in total and complete control of what he was doing. I mean, that was HEIFETZ.

Jack Benny always had such great enthusiasm. Heifetz was a good sport about such nonsense. A great broadcast.

Edward Arnold is emcee for this segment because this was originally broadcast on Armed Forces Radio's "COMMAND PERFORMANCE", a weekly variety show featuring virtually every "name" celebrity in radio, motion pictures, stage, opera and concerts- heard ONLY by our military forces overseas during World War II...and preserved on transcription discs.

Benny did this almost identical skit with Menuhin, Szigeti and Stern. Some are on youtube. Priceless stuff. A slightly sound enhanced version of this one is on

@Flaminggential Edward MacDowell's "To a Wild Rose". Popular piano piece from the early 20th Century. It's out there, still in print. This violin version is an arrangement.

Benny was a decent enough player. It isn't easy to play badly specifically, which is what Jack Benny often did. There are recordings of his where he is playing well. Einstein was also a decent violin player. Fortunately for each of them, and for us, both had day jobs.
