These minidisc-recorders were amazing devices. I actually still have an mz-rh10 lying around. It still works, but the Oled-Display is also very dim after all these years. There is just something super nostalgic about these devices. At a time when discman were still considered a novelty by most people, minidisc-recorders seemed like they came at least 20 years from the future. Also design wise the RH1 is an absolute beauty.

Check out the asking prices on eBay...new in box for $1800. One would think someone would create a replacement battery. I would be willing to pay like $50 but $100+ that is being asked.

Awesome stuff! I'm getting into soldering and basic DIY tinkering myself so this kind of content is right up my alley.

Thanks for sharing - congrats on replacing the cell. Pity there isn't more room in the battery compartment for a larger capacity cell but it also continues to amaze me how little energy that these players need.

Rene, MiniDisc is another one of my obsessions. That is actually how I first found your channel, doing a OLED repair for the MZ-RH1. It has been a busy week for you I see. I am getting caught up on the videos that I have missed in the last two weeks. Thanks for the progress on the PS3. I hope to get mine running again so I can try the newest T2sde

You should be able to purchase those cells without controller circuits... I have certainly bought cylindrical batteries without built in protection. For soldering in mass anyway you want a battery spot welder since this makes the burst of energy very high and short welding just the point and not heating the battery much at all. I always liked minidisc after alot of scratched cdroms you come to appreciate disk with built in enclosures.

You don't need a spot welder for lithium cells - just don't linger on the leads with the iron and it will be fine. Nice to have but not necessary.

Hi Rene, I just ordered 4 of those exact batteries and will try so the same with my Sony MZ-RH1 battery. I was trying to follow your movie and was not sure if you cut the wires on the new battery to the controller. Do you use the old Sony controller instead? Do you have any close up photos of the repair on the internet? Thank you

I would need to recheck, but was it not that it turned out the origin IC was fried, so I soldered the new batteries charge controller directly to the terminals. but your milage may vary. Please feel free to post what you ended up doing and results!

Thanks for the video, But I still don't understand how you solder the battery. Did you take the controller circuits out and solder the original battery connection points on to battery directly??? Thanks!!!

The original battery short circuit was dead anyway, so in the end I soldered the new battery with its protection circuit onto the terminal connectors of the tiny pcb.

I got a RH1 from ebay but there's a problem of power cut off easily. Whenever I lightly press the T MARK area on the cover the power got cut off. And if I release my finger it comes back on...kinda annoying since I cannot touch it while playing.

sound like a loose connection inside, cold / broken solder joint or similar. Given the small size working and repairing this tiny SMD PCBs is rather delicate and thus tricky. Be careful!

I probably mentioned the generic type somewhere, but you can just match the lithium cell size with that you can get in your country
