On a brutally cold and windy Iowa Saturday, railfans from all over flocked to the Iowa Interstate to see the much anticipated move of Union Pacific equipment to the new RRHMA Silvis shops. This donation to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America was announced over six months ago and was a shock to many. Outside of around a dozen passenger cars, UP also donated the only operating DDA40X, a long stored 2-10-2, and most surprising of all, former UP steam star Challenger 3985. With performance issues at UP and the restoration of 4014, UP no longer has the ability to keep this equipment. However, all of the equipment seen here will eventually be restored at the massive SIlvis shops, along with the IAIS QJ's and maybe even more as the shop becomes a hub of railroad restoration. This move is the first time in over a decade that 3985 has left the UP shop and the first time since the end of steam that 5511 has ever moved, so this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime move to see. Hopefully, the next time I see these engines on the mainline, they will be moving under their own power.
