April 14, 1996 - Wearing an oversized jersey with tape across the name "Cleaves" along the back, Ferndale's 5-foot-8 phenom Rashad Phillips proved, late addition or not, that he belonged among the nation's best high school basketball recruits of '96. With shorts draping down past his knees and the ESPN broadcast referring to him as "Rashard" all evening, Phillips dazzled in front of the home state crowd at the Palace of Auburn Hills, earning MVP honors in leading his team to a mild upset at the Magic Johnson Roundball Classic.
Phillips went on to play four years under Perry Watson at Detroit Mercy, earning two Horizon League Player of the Year honors, two All-American honorable mentions, the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award for best senior basketball player under six feet, three-time All-Horizon League honors, two Horizon League scoring titles, and finished as Detroit's all-time leading scorer (2,319 points).
Following his collegiate career, Phillips was named MVP at the pre-draft Portsmouth Invitational. Still, Phillips went undrafted before catching on with the Mobile Revelers during the NBDL's inaugural season (now known as the G-League). Phillips went on to enjoy a near decade long professional career in the NBDL, NBA summer league, and overseas.
