I have recently started learning to solder. Nothing I do seems to work well, and I always make a mess. I have tried watching many introductory videos on it, but it seems each of them promote fancy hardware that I do not have access to. Thank you for making this video. You showed me a new way to think about solving my problems, and seeing things not go perfectly for you really helped encourage me to keep trying with my own projects. Thank you!!!

Hey David, if you're saving to buy a new camera and need it sooner rather than later I'd suggest looking at financing options. On my camera (£500 ish), it only added an extra £30 or so to the overall price and you can pay it over a 12 month period, or just pay it off in a lump some when you have the money, which is what I did. I used amazon if you're interested.

The problem of financing everything is that you can get a bad credit score very fast if you don‘t pay attention. It‘s not a problem with 45€/month but some people finance everything and then wonder why they got a bad credit score (or SCHUFA). Here many young people don‘t even know something like a credit score is a thing.

As far as the "Kevin" tool goes, you use the set screw to adjust the tool to the gauge of wire you need to strip. If you adjust it just right, the insulation comes off really easy, without marking the wire. I used to have one of those wire strippers back in the day, when I was an electrician. After a while though, you will likely start to rely on the feel of the tool instead of adjusting the set screw all the time.

I've had a pair of those strippers with bare metal handles that I was given when I was a kid. I've also got a pliers I'm still using from the same era. I was given them as they were about 40 or 50 years old at the time. Yay for vintage tools! Still using them. The other thing with the strippers is that because of the dual V shape, it creates a bit of a square hole. You might want to squeeze them onto the wire, then let go, then rotate by about 45 degrees then squeeze again to make sure the insulation is cut properly before you pull to pull the (now) cut insulation off.
@janpetersen8441

@ParedCheese - Yeah, truth be told, I only used those strippers when I had a lot of wires to strip. Otherwise I use the side cutters as well. For fine gauge wire though, it can be difficult not to nick the wire, which often can cause it to break later on.

For fine wires, I find (super expensive!) wire strippers like these 26-16AWG fixed size stripers the best. That or the trusty flush cut side cutters or two front teeth ;) www.ebay.com/itm/Multi-Function-7inch-0-4-1-3mm-26-16-AWG-Cable-Wire-Cutter-Stripper-Plier-Tool-/121111010973?hash=item1c32c75e9d:g:RHgAAOxyhYxR5KnR

Nowadays configuring Raspbian's WiFi from a Windows machine is quite simple. Add wpa_supplicant.conf with correct content to /boot/ (partition that is visible in Windows) and it gets moved to correct location when the Pi boots up. That's great if one wants to configure headless Pi. Previously this didn't work with Raspbian Lite, but now it's fixed and earlier today I tested this method with latest Lite image.

Add to other comments, this is from 30 years of experience too. 1. use kynar wire 2. heatshrink tube the wifi just before mounting, this give the wifi a nice boot to sit in and also prevent shorts. 3. hotglue the board/heatshrink onto the back of the PI zero to secure it nicely. 4. hotglue the kynar wire from being moved and break off (it is very thin). why not buy a Zero W? Nah, hacking is fun.

no offense but: I would recommend you to watch a soldering tutorial. your first improvement should be to pre-tin all cables and contacts before connecting them. otherwise you could check out some quadcopter build videos, there did i learn most of it. after some training I did improve to 200% faster results with much less problems.

I cringed at you not knowing how to adjust a pair of wire strippers... turn the screw until you can break the insulation but not cut the wires. This video is kind of relevant again as the Pi Zero W are as rare as rocking-horse poo these days. I did hear a purist go on about the data specs of using wire isn't upholding to the idea of USB, but that's rocket science and if everyday engineering can get the job done then I'm all for it!

The Pi zero is way over priced for what it does and even with WiFi it's still worthless! Save your money and get something better! Besides, soldering the WiFi adapter to the USB port is a really stupid idea when you can just get a USB to micro-USB adapter and simply plug it in! Also if you solder the adapter to the port you won't be able to use the port anymore and the adapter might not work anyway, I tried several WiFi adapters and couldn't get any of them to work without using a Powered Hub!
