Rat Behaviours:
Rats in Heat
A female rat is called a doe.
A doe of breeding age will go into heat every 4 to 5 days. One of the signs that your rat is in heat is when they wiggle their ears, such as displayed in this video. This usually happens when you touch their rump. Some rats hop, run and squeek during this time. Some may act skittish or playful. Each rat is different.
Other signs that your rat is in heat, includes a swollen and darkened vulva. Rats DO NOT bleed when they are in heat. If your rat is bleeding, take it to the vet immediately. Bleeding can be a sign of a UTI or other health issues such as pyometra.
A qualified vet can diagnose and prescribe the best treatment, which can be anything from antibiotics to an emergency spay, depending on the diagnosis.
