I vividly remember the moment I first heard Ratatat. I was on tour with a high school music group in New York City, and a group of us stopped at the Virgin Records Megastore. This was summer of '04 if I'm not mistaken. Back then I used to read Pitchfork like it was gospel, and I remembered reading a positive review of Ratatat's debut record. I figured I'd give it a shot, and bought it without ever hearing a second of it.
When we got back on the bus I got out my Discman and put the CD in, and I think for the rest of my life I'll always remember that line at the top of the first track, the one that starts, "I've been rapping for about 17 years, okay?" And then this sound that I'd never heard before hit me like a ton of bricks. The distorted guitar, dirty synth, solid bass and weird backwards percussion totally knocked me out.
A few years later I'm in the dorms at this new place 900 miles from home in my freshman year of college. I hear that Ratatat's got a new record out and I immediately order it. When I listened to Classics, it was like a time warp back to this magical moment when I first heard them. The songs were all new, but it sounded like them, and nobody else. Loud Pipes has always been my favorite off that record, and I wanted to showcase it here. Please enjoy, and if you haven't listened to Ratatat, or just listened to a couple tracks here and there, sit down and listen to a full record. There's some real magic in there.
