I saw Pocahontas for the first time last month and loved it. It has some of the most beautiful music and animation I’ve ever seen. (Especially in the scene where John and Poco meet) I agree Ratcliffe is a one note villain but that’s okay. Sometimes you need a one note villian to help you focus on the main characters more. Not every bad guy has to be Frollo or Scar.

More like a pointless villain. His role in the movie is redundant. The prejudice and fear exists between the settlers and the natives regardless of his presence. Also, making him a villain is an insult to the real Ratcliffe, who was unjustly and gruesomely murdered by the natives after he tried to establish a peaceful trade relationship with them. The movie didn't really need a villain tbh. The stakes are high enough without one.

I think he was made for a clear direction; the colonists are depicted as being misled into believing that they're doing something good for themselves (at the expense of someone else) and their families, while Ratcliffe simply wants the glory and has no loyalty for anyone, not even the other colonists.

Ratcliffe is not my favorite villain that’s for sure. I interpret him as a narcissist where he can do no wrong because he is doing it for England. I like to ask was he supposed to get better character development. I mean he went from wanting gold to trying to murder Pocahontas’ father. That really solidifies him as a villain in my opinion.

Boring isn’t the word I would use, to be honest his villain song and the. Sequel established Radcliffe to be a charismatic gold digger. He worked himself into a friendship with king James and into a governor position with the Virginia company. He uses his influence in the first film to near successfully blame the local native tribe for the problems of his rule in Jamestown.

It's pretty ironic that Disney thought Pocahontas would age better than The Lion King. The sad thing is that Pocahontas could have worked if Disney had not made it so market-heavy (romance, funny animal sidekicks, a villain etc). Originally the plan was to be more culturally/historically authentic and have Pocahontas be a child and there would be a language barrier between the settlers and natives, with Pocahontas gradually learning English. Lindsey Ellis once did a really good video analysis on this movie.

@vetarlittorf1807 I always wondered, even back when it first came out, why they just didn't adapt an actual First People story? Disney has no problem with Northen European fairy tales, but god forbid they make a Glooscap or Kokopelli movie.

Pocahontas is one of those movies that I think would gain a lot from simply renaming the characters. Rename Pocahontas, John Smith and Ratcliffe to anything else, make it a story about just "a random native american and a random white guy" and it'd immediately have so many less problems. Another movie like that to me is Maleficient: make it about just.... a random new villain with a tragic backstory who learns to love a child, don't name them Maleficient and Aurora, and immediately it'd get so much less criticism.

He’s not the worst villain, at least he had good moments in both movies, but I agree that he needed to interact with Pocahontas to make the story have a better contrast with the good and bad. I still like the movie and holds a special place in my heart from childhood as at least top 20 in my favorite Disney movies, but it does have flaws, as the villain is good (at least for me), but he was almost great, as they should have made him a mass manipulator who wanted power and respect beyond the title of King (only showed once in Mine, Mine, Mine). You can tell this movie concept was forced upon the writers by Jeffrey Katzenberg and they just had to make it work somehow with that bit of potential (if you need a comparison, then it’s like being forced to use an Eevee in a Pokémon tournament, so you have to build the team around its very fragile niche as an Extreme Evoboost baton passer). There was some good intentions, but obviously it didn’t pan out even close to perfectly. But at least it got the Oscar for music (like how someone did get 1st place with Eevee), as that was at least excellent and honestly the best soundtrack out the entire Disney renaissance.

I wouldn't say its a sign they didn't see the Native Americans as humans and more-so that they simply didn't care what happened with an insignificant tribe an ocean away. if Ratcliffe had been killed and the colony wiped out, the reaction would have been something along the lines of "Oh no! Anyways." I mean, until Cortes managed to conquer the Aztecs, Spain was too concerned about European matters to give the New World any sort of priority.

Not that this has anything to do with Pocohontas or Disney, but I've heard that Shrek 5 is in the works. Of all the villains that impacted Shrek to a degree (Except Prince Charming), this one may top it all off. And potentially surpass Fairy Godmother as the best DreamWorks villain. A villain that I created. The Apothecary is my take on the High Evolutionary from Guardians 3. She doesn't have a specific name, but she is, in fact, the one who cursed Princess Fiona from the first movie. Her motivations for cursing Princess Fionna actually stemmed back to her very own tragic backstory. The Apothecary was once a young girl who resided in her own kingdom. Her father was a good king, and she looked up to him because of it. She did everything she could in her power to live up to him, but as all kingdoms go, the queen isn't supposed to be the high governing body. Because of this, her twin brother got promoted as king instead. Her mother even tried to support her, but the Apothecary just thought her mother wanted her to be "weak" like her. So she left. Being queen regardless of the kingdom's established status was going to be happily ever after. But it was taken away because the queen isn't supposed to be the overall governing body. It filled her heart with so much darkness to where because she didn't get her happily ever after, maybe no one in the world, should. But the Apothecary didn't just curse princess Fiona. She cursed many other princesses long before AND after her. And even adopts them as her own daughters. She does show sympathy for them, but only so they can grow up to be like her. She was even going to take Princess Fiona and adopt her too. But Harold and Lilian, the king and Queen of Far Far Away caught her red handed, so she left on her own. And she even knew that true love would save Fiona, but knew she wouldn't because nobody loved ogres at the time. That's how evil she is. She and her army of evil princesses have not only managed to conquer her castle, but she's conquered all other regimes across the world. And all that's left is the Kingdom of Far Far Away. Shrek is still the main protagonist, but Fionna is the one who truly gets to shine in this scenario. And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I would love to have a Endgame sequence where all the surviving characters from the Shrek Universe unite to help Fionna take down the Apothecary. This will also Impact Shrek into becoming the King of Far Away, with him actually staying this time.

I don't think he's boring or useless, just the subject matter of the film and it's execution was flawed, they pretend it's history when Smith was worse than Ratcliffe and here he is as saviour. Irl Ratcliffe tried to negotiate from what I hear however relations soured I forgot what happened but eventually he was shot by the Natives. If Disney wants to have Ratcliffe a villain then Smith should be the worst one, here's a still fictional film which will be specified as such in the opening titles, all that's in common names. Ratcliffe is a manipulative greedy guy, he does genuinely care for some people (shown by Wiggins) but all he wants is the Natives gold, he pretends to be interested in their culture and history but really is apathetic and couldn't care what happens, John Smith is still set up as a war hero, fighting against all odds but over the film we and some of the cast start to go "sure a man with guns and armour vs unarmoured men with bows, definitely a fair fight" and slowly we see Smith as a hunter of sorts, he sees the Native Americans as prey, animals, "savages" as he wholeheartedly believes and he's using Pocahontas to get to the Chief and kill him, we also find out he as a sailor been to America before on a "hunting trip" and killed Pocahontas' mother, Thomas is obsessed with Smith's seemingly (by the time's standards) heroic image and idolises him, he soon uncovers the truth, Kocoum is still in a similar situation just Pocahontas doesn't cheat on him because they're just friends or she and John are just "friends". Lon and Ben are our comic relief and are funny drunk dads, Wiggins is still our moral compass. Powhatan, nakoma, Namontak and Kekata all still have the same role just with as much personality as the colonials because they seem like walking scripts, not characters. Pocahontas has a similar role just minus cheating. Percy is just a cute but sobby dog who's a metaphor for Ratcliffe's lifestyle. Grandmother Willow still goes listen with your heart just this time it has a different meaning as it's see through John's lies. Meeko and flit are either just cute animals or ain't here, their slapstick was outta place. In this version we gain a background character who says nothing originally but is now a proper character it's the other native chief with the red feathers, Opechancanough Mangopeesomon "Eagle Plume" Powhatan, he is Powhatan's brother and is the warrior while Powhatan's the more gentle, Opechancanough is the badass uncle to Pocahontas who everyone wishes got his own film because he's the strongest and fiercest warrior, he during the skirmish scene single handedly fights with Smith for stalking Pocahontas, he disarms John and is first and only character we see fighting John and succeeding. That's my concept anyway lol.

Death, all The Official Villains of Disney and all The Official Villains of DreamWorks, because Melody is The Daughter of Prince Eric and Princess Ariel, but also The Death of Queen Lillian, because since her husband named King Harold passed away in the movie of Shrek 3, she has felt heartbroken and that caused her own death in her Kingdom of Far Far Away, and all The Inhabitants of The Kingdom of Far Far Away are saddened by The Death of Queen Lillian, because now she is with her husband named King Harold in heaven, and now they have lost their queen, that means now The Kingdom of Far Far Away needs a new queen and King Artie said that his love interest, girlfriend, fiancée and former classmate from Worcestershire school called Princess Guinevere would be the one to be The New Queen of Hiccup Haddock, Princess Tiffany is going to fall in love with Prince Lancelot and Princess Guinevere is going to fall in love with King Artie, but they don't know how to tell them their feelings I don’t think the love story is boring at all. John Smith was born and raised with racist attitudes about Indians and only saw them as savages to conquer or shun until he met Pocohontas. He falls in love with her not just because she is beautiful but because she teaches him the importance of respecting the world of nature by saying every creature and tree has a spirit and a name aka the spark of the divine, helping him become a better version of himself. Even though he was raised with racist ideas, it didn’t make him a heartless villian; it only meant he was conditioned a certain way and had to break free from the echo chamber and grow as a character. (In the song Mine, Mine, while Radcliffe sings about power and riches, John Smith sings about adventures that will challenge him and lead him to greater heights and meeting Pocohontas was one of them.)

Pocohantas in my opinion is on of the worst disney rennaissance that I've seen. It's worse than than the rescuers down under(a sequel to 1977's the rescuers.) The rescuers down under isn't a bad disney rennaissance animated movie even there's no musical numbers. This sequel will alaways have a place in my heart.

If only Rescuers Down Under had been a bigger success. Then the direct to dvd sequels would have been made by the main Disney animation studio or at least would have better animation and production qualities. They specifically changed the ending to Aladdin (originally Jafar was going to die and Genie was going to be the mortal merchant seen in the beginning) to leave room open for an actual sequel.

I still remember seeing Rescuers Down Under on the big screen as a kid, and I loved it. It's beautifully animated, has a truly wicked villain voiced by George C. Scott, and best of all, Joanna the goana

Pocahontas is the 2nd most unecessary Disney movie ever made, right after Dinosaur in my humble opinion. At least movies like Chicken Little or Cars were entertaining, memorable and didn't get history so wrong.

Yeah. Of all the villains that Disney had he is definitely the one that blatantly embodies the Puritanical Devil trope and practically does it on the nose. Scar, Frollo, Ursula, heck even Maleficent and the Evil Queen were a bit better than him in that regard. Although in the context of the film he does his job quite well and thanks to him we have a song that serves as an accurate portrayal of almost any argument in existence. 😂

You know Richard White, the voice of Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, was originally offered to voice Ratcliffe. If that did happen, people would see Ratcliffe as a boring non-stalker with a crush Gaston based on the voice. What do you think

It actually dawned on me rewatching his scenes as an adult that Ratcliffe is a very hands on, proactive villain. Think about it. He actively participates in the story, he's not off somewhere far away ranting and raving to his minions and only comes in the last part. He's the one who shoots the first native. He's the one who keeps the Settlers on his side, he's the one who comes up with the plan, and he's the one who leads from the front while rallying the Settlers to War. And he gets not one but TWO bangers for villain songs
