I've definitely had mice escape several times, but they're not comfortable being too far from their nest, so every time any of my mice escaped I just left food around the cage to lead them back to it. I would find them the next morning desperately trying to get back INTO the cage, haha. I've never had rats, only mice, but all of my mice have been total sweethearts. They're interested in what I'm doing, and they like to come out of the cage and explore, but they're not too into people.

One way to introduce mice is to put the newcomer and the old one on an unfamiliar spot where neither of them been before. Watch them as they introduce and if they tend to be offensive, split them and try again later. When they seem to like oneanother, put them both in a CLEAN cage, free from any mice sent. Then hopfully it will all work well. ;)

The odor you are concerned about comes from male mice. They do lay down a scent trail but the girls do not. In any event, always scrub out your tubes at least weekly since they do pee and poop in them.

I got a gerbil from my neighbor, and she had a wired wheel just like the one the mice have (but she was an adult and is grown up) and when her pal died she kept running on it and even filed it down a bit, but she's fine, she just has a shorter tail, luckily I didn't have wired (because I heard about the problem with the tails and I am glad I didn't) but I had them and she's using one of them now which is good. But yea.

Are you sure one mouse was killing all the rest? I mean it is likely if one specific mouse is surviving. But rats and mice often eat parts of dead cagemates and bury the rest (if there is sand available). It's not because they are hungry, because there is plenty of food available, nor are they cannibals, they don’t seek to kill each other for food. It’s possible that your mouse was territorial and killing the ‘intruder’ mice because they were not introduced properly.

Not trying to be rude but A) you shouldn't keep rats in a tank it could cause a respiratory problem B) you SHOULD NOT hold ANY animals by the tail as it could seriously injure them! C) a rat or mouse could Mis-step and break their leg on that wheel! Please try to be careful...

there is no proper ventilation and the tank would have to be sanitised atleast 2 times a week to keep it at a good health standard for ratties as they pee and poo a lot. I change my cages out at the least 2 times a week! Plus, they would have nowhere to run, climb and jump as there are no levels in an aquarium tank. Rats need lots of mental stimulation to help keep them happy and mentally stimulated, cages are the best set-up for this, it would be worth spending the money on a wire cage.

I don't suggest just feeding lab blocks they can get bored and will try to eat any thing else they need a veryed diet or they'll eat their wast and bedding.don't use wire wheels the can get bumble foot and get their tails cuaget in them.don't pick them up by their tails it can cause shinel problems and their tails can break.have drifernt chews.don't use soft wood shavings and try to avoid shavings they can have mites.don't move mothers around to much they are already stressed and they don't need more I would wait week befor moving any of them to give mom time to a just.most of what she said would get your pet a trip to a vet.and don't breed adopt/foster.
@parachutes_party
7 жыл бұрын
Lab blocks are a great diet. it ensures they'll eat everything they need and not just pick out the treat parts that are in mixed food. Sure you can feed them different fresh foods to give them a little variety but they don't need it. No animal will eat their feces unless maybe they are starving. Bumble foot is not caused by wire but by dirty cages that has the bacteria in it. Even cages without any wire at all that are not properly cleaned can give them bumble foot. Circular wheels will not cause any issues as long as they are the proper size for the animal using it. You can pick up both mice and rats by the base of their tails without hurting them. The only way it will rip their skin is if you grab them by the tip or lower section of their tail. A quality block food helps to wear down their teeth but it's good to have something else for them to chew on. This can include wood bedding, plastic hides, or cardboard hides. Wood bedding can have mites but as long as you get them from a quality source they should be fine. If you're worried about mites you can always use Diatomaceous Earth or DE as a preventative. Wood beddings like aspen or kiln dried pine are good options. Well bred rats and mice will not be stressed at the presence of humans even when they have young. I know some great rat breeders who have even experienced their mother rats putting their babies into their hands. Without breeders you wouldn't have any pets to begin with.
@briannaharter4411
7 жыл бұрын
lab blocks don't contain everything they'll need.lab blocks don't contain the micronutrients or the fiber you get from fresh foods.also they do eat the bedding and poop if they aren't getting a good variety and there are many animals that eat their poop even when not starving. bumble foot is caused by dirty conditions and abrasive surfaces like wire wheels. there tails aren't made to hold up their body weight.so picking them up by their tails does hurt them and is rather risky to do. you should encourage them to chew on things designed to be chewed.they shouldn't be chewing on their bedding and certainly not their plastic house.cardboard hides are fine to chew on but they won't wear down their teeth that much. I originally messed up and put hard wood instead of soft(fixxed now.it was a typo cause I was typing on my phone).pine is dangerous cause contains chemical compound naturaly produced by pine and no amount of kiln drying will remove these chemical compounds cause they are soil.also diatomaceous earth is dangerous to use around rats since they have really sensitive respiratory system and fine dust particles like that of diatomaceous earth can set their respiratory systems off and can kill them.the safest way to get rid of mites is freezing the bedding but this is not 100% grantee the bedding will be mite free. it's not a matter of being well bred or handled.mothers are stressed after birth and don't want to be messed with.they need time to recoup after giving birth.

@animalexchange1 I understand that people may enjoy them, but a lot of health risks with them come into play. I only have hairless rats if it's an "oops" litter, I would never purposely breed for hairless. They do need to keep warmer then normal rats (If you touch one they are really warm body heat wise), they can get sick easier, and you need to watch their diets a little more. If you breed two hairless gene rats, the litters will most likely be still born.

@margaritaetournaud4505

The ventilation isn't at all as good in tanks, Rats are very sensitive animals and their cage needs to be away from draughts orexcessive heat but must be well ventilated. Tanks may be open on top but that does not provide enough ventilation lower down. Rats need a non dusty litter, they have a repiratory weakness which can easily be activated. (Anyway, imagine your nose being stuck in a dusty litter or wood shavings.....!!!) Also, they LOVE to climb. Mine spent most of their time climbing up and down their cage when they were in it, (even though i had several levels and ramps between the levels)and out too, they would climb all over their cage. It is good for them to remain active even when they are in their cage so it would be a huge shame to put them in a tank. Rats are lovely pets, my favourite, but they need to be well looked after, as they are very prone to health problems and don't live that long. Concerning the tail, I know nothing about mice so no comment, but I have never needed to hold a rat by the tail (the base!!!) at all even at the beginning, as long as you hold them, gently , firmly to provide them with a sense of security. Once they have got used to you, they'll be climbing all over you anyway! mine did pretty quickly, but it can take a while sometimes..)
