I used to be a hummer tech. I had a new h3, customer said it made a noise like running over a coat hanger at random. I drove this thing around with chassis ears for 2 weeks looking for this noise, and it kept radiating up and down the driveline. I swapped the transmission, transfer case, both driveshafts, both diffs and the noise was still there, and it was random, no rhyme or reason to it. Gm finally sent out an engineer to help me with it, and he suspected something with the parking brake, but I said can't be, I already swapped the entire diff, but I humored him and pulled the wheels off for the umpteenth time, and as I did, the left rear wheel made the noise. The engineer and I couldn't get to the tire machine fast enough to bust this tire down, and sure enough, inside the tire was a valve stem with no cap on it so the brass exposed and a piece of masking tape tagged on it. On the tag was written with a sharpie "gotcha!". Remember... h3 was one if the first vehicles to hit the road with tpms sensors, so it didn't even half valve stems, who would have thought to look for a valve stem inside the aluminum wheel bouncing around and the brass hitting the aluminum wheel at random?

ITS NOT CRAZY; what really happened was WHEN the big box store broke the tmps, so the mechanic disconnects the module that all the tMPS actually plug into and control the sensors; it also sends the signal back to the car computer, that controls the tire light; so the car no longer has a working Tire Pressure Monitor system on any tire not just the front passenger; Therefore it would be impossible for the tire light to be illuminated; otherwise the customer would have known right away, that there was a problem; I AM QUITE SURPRISED JAMIE DOESNT KNOW

Don’t blindly trust any dealer though. Yes, in many cases I will say they are much better qualified, educated and equipped to handle the cars they sell. That doesn’t mean they will always be best choice or will have the best people working for them. Ask anyone in the auto repair industry (from part sales to owners/GM’s) and they will say the same thing. There have been countless incidents because someone did something wrong at a dealership. Sometimes unqualified people can slip through the cracks of a hiring process because they lie/misrepresented themselves when interviewed then got hired, or you can have a great mechanics work quality start diminishing overtime because they are having personal problems that are effecting them at work (ie; spousal abuse, substance abuse and family struggles are just a few things that can cause this) or someone is just having a bad day or made a mistake. Everything I just mentioned covers just the physical work being done. Don’t get me started on horror stories I have heard about deceptive salesman or lying service writers at dealerships. They can be some of the worst when it comes to gouging prices and/or nickel and dimming everything on a invoice. Plus add on top of that, there have been many instances where a customer wants to get a high performance/utility/decorative accessories just to have some knock off version of it put on in a attempt to pass it off as the real thing. The even worst part about that is you only find out about one or two times someone doing that but most times that was just the first time they got caught. My point in all of this is just because you’re at a place like a dealership that doesn’t mean you won’t ever have any issues. It doesn’t matter if it’s a big box store, small mom and pop garage or a fancy dealer. Anyplace where humans are in control mistakes can be made, people can get scammed or worse. Ask the people in your area where they go, check reviews of the facilities you use. Finally, a little pro tip. If you’re looking for a good mechanic try this. Go to any part store that doesn’t offer auto repair and ask them what shop they would trust to fix their families cars. Those are the people in a unique position to see inside most of and talk to a lot of the people in their local shops and they will be the ones to see and hear about the good, bad and ugly.

Did this to myself earlier this year, changed my own tires at the shop I work at, my car has bands on the wheel that the sensor clips into, accidentally clipped mine loose but it didn't come off until driving, took it off and the sensor was flying around free, also still works for me 😂

I work in a tire shop and have all of my adult life. We are an independent “mom and pops” shop. If any of my guys break a sensor. It does happen we keep them in stock and we’ll fix it properly. Please support your local tire shop. Find an independent place to deal with don’t go to the grocery store to get service

As a Mechanic of 1 year 8 months, this has happened 3 times, so a lot more common than one might think

Discount Tire did that to my wife’s car. We went to a real shop later. They felt so bad they replaced all the sensors for free. Now we’ve been buying tires exclusively from that good, REAL, tire shop.

Tip of the day: Never replace your tires at a big box store. They did the same thing to me, and later claimed it was loose bouncing all over the tire. Hint:Walmart

Could have guessed. Who buys a Mercedes and then buys tires at Walmart. Go to Tire Rack, buy them and then have a real mechanic put them on. Not a 16 yo high school drop out.

Lucky that's it! When I heard that noise from my rear tire it ended up being the axle nut that came completely off

Hehe, yep. When I was in the tire industry I found stuff like a whole spanner in a punctured truck tire and a ball point pen on a punctured car tire!

Wouldn't have happened at the dealership. I was amazed to learn my BMW dealership had a better price on tires than the big tire chains.

I had that sort of thing happen to me. But instead a tpms unit, it was a tire guide part that broke off the machine, stuck into the tire bead, and came loose when I hit a pothole. I took it to the car dealer, they found it, no charge. WIN!

As crazy as the outcome was (I'm super surprised that the sensor was working) I feel like the customer deserves credit for hearing that rattle from inside the car.

Ah the good ole tire shop/ quick lube techs are at it again! I bought a Honda crv off a lady. The tech installed a defective neck radiator where radiator cap couldnt seal properly. They left a cooling fan unplugged too. Crv lost coolant, fan could come on, thus resulted in a cracked engine head plus they only charged her $1,500 to destroy her car.

TPMS will damage the tire if it tumbles so much. Had the exact same happen at Midas several times actually. It was destroying the inside of the tire. You’d have a lot of loose rubber shavings thanks to the loose sensor. We used the exact same machines as you too. However, I have NEVER seen someone try to rig it like this. That’s terrible 😂

Back when I was at Firestone they would JB weld the sensors to the rims if broken off 🤦🏼♂️
