I couldn't wait until in the morning, so I went out and did what you did, but I lay under the car on the r/h side, then I used my left hand to follow the rail up to the release tab, and it worked a treat!

It's great to hear that you were able to resolve the issue quickly. Maybe run down to the Toyota dealer to pick up a new cable. You're a good friend

I just had the same thing happen to my 2002 rav4. Took me less than 5 minutes to fix. ::Here is what I did:: I removed the driver's side splash guard (like in the video), put a light in there so I could see, reached my arm up and flipped the tab with hand. Don't mess around with the wrench, it is very easy to reach by hand and shouldn't take more than a minute or two

I wish I'd seen that yesterday. Instead, I spent multiple hours with the 2005 Lexus es330 on the hoist while I tried various approaches. Eventually I drilled a hole in the bottom of the mechanism and wiggled a screwdriver around until it "popped". Now I wait for the new hood lock from Lexus, as well as the replacement cable. This video is clever and informative.

Cool! Thank you for the video, Brian! My car is a 2001 Chevy Prizm. The problem with my hood latch is the spring has lost its springiness. To open the hood, I pull the handle inside the car, then put a roll of electrical tape under the handle to hold the hold the handle all the way open. Then I walk to the hood, press the release lever and pull the hood up. And now it is time to replace the hood latch! I bought a new one for just $17.01 (And 1701 is also my apartment number. And NCC-1701 is the fleet number for the Enterprise on Star Trek.). Rain has been falling on and off all day long. If I'm lucky, I will have an entire hour before rain falls again.

This video was extremely helpful! It still took me a while and I had to get very inventive with creating a tool to get it opened (a selfie stick with an Allen wrench at the end works well!) but I wanted to say thank you. You saved my day and my much loved 03 RAV4.

Thanks so much for this good sir! I probably would have struggled with this for hours upon hours without your help. Fortunately for me I have skinny arms and I was able to reach in from the driver's side with my hand and pull the tab with my finger. I really can't thank you enough!

Thanks for the video - my problem was a broken cable, but I was able to gain access to the hatch release from underneath. It turns out I was able to reach the latch mechanism with my hand. I followed the spring from the fixed side until I could feel the release lever. The rest was easy.

Thanks for this. I got my 05 Rav4 back from a distant body shop after an out-of-town crash and found I couldn't open the hood when I got home. I had fantasies of using a sawzall to cut the hood off the latch and replace it. My latch turned out to be well enough lubricated that I could just pop it with my hand (at the end of a long arm). Same crummy broken plastic ferrule that you had. I tied it on with a piece of steel wire that will probably outlast the car.

I would like mine to be repaired the way you did it, without removing anything but the flaps. I saw other successful videos of people accomplishing the same thing with minimal removal of other body parts. I would assume a Toyota specialist might be interested in your clear and concise video that demonstrated all the complications w/o a lift and excellent lighting. Anyway I could have you contact my mechanic? Perhaps we could connect through e mail. It was not displayed what state you are in. 🤞Donna

Are use a piece of electrician metal electrical snake with a hook on it or you can use a good coat hanger with a small hook all you have to do is go from the bottom catch on that piece and pull it to the right and opens right up I was able to accomplish this in five minutes thank you for the video you did send me on the right track but the wrong tool

I also had my gas tank straps fail from age and corrosion on my rav but it still loved the miles before I sold it. Good luck and try any easy way you can to unlatch the hood and be sure to purchase a new cable from your dealer. Oh, we should all be regularly lubricating every mechanism attached to the hood latching systems to assure smooth operation

@@SolRayz it's so easy but you need something long that's very ridgid preferably with a right angle. Not usually something laying around. Also depending on how well your hood springs up you may need someone to lift the hood as you manipulate the catch
