One of the most revered bucking horses of all time was a very well bred AQHA mare who simply loved to buck. She was lovely to be around ... not too affectionate but polite and self possessed. She was too much of a lady to stand at a feed bunk when on the road, so she was kept stalled with my saddle horses. I haltered and led her to the chutes, she bucked, strutted back to be untacked, dropped her face into the halter and walked back like any conquering race horse, pleased with herself.

You have done great and Zeus is an awesome pleasure horse. In our operation we buy 5 horses at a time and train them as ropers, agility, short racers and mainly cattle busters. If they do not improve within a certain amount of time, we sell them... The horse I referred to wasnt very agile, had a lot of habits(kicking, biting, etc.) and he was a slow learner -not right for my application- I sold him to a trail trainer, because he spends more time with each trait. I am best with very young horses

@mOiihh1 It's because the flank strap enhances the bucking. It tickles the horse's waist and it's on just tight enough so that the horse thinks it can kick it off. After the rider has fallen, the life riders come and pull the flank strap off and grab the horse's lead rope and put it back in the chute.
@thegreatnoldini

@ncolgan1 Well the flank strap only enhances the bucking. It basically tickles the horse. It's like if someone tied a real itchy belt to your waist or something. It tickles and you kinda wanna kick around lol.... or just take the belt sinch off.

Horses' ears do a lot of things. They aren't "angered" by the flank, the flank produces an instinctual fear/panic reaction. They spend their lives in small pens, and double-decker trailers for transport. Makes it easier to drop them off at an auction, where they head straight to slaughter. It's the rodeo way. Just ask Calgary Stampede what they do with their culled "broncs".
@thegreatnoldini

standingatthedoor: I worked with one organization that just did thoroughbreds that raced. Another one was just for horses that came from southern indiana. Not a big rodeo state.They included donkeys, mules, standardbreds, saddlebreds, etc. All of which would not find a home in a rodeo. There were quarters and paints. MANY of which were youngsters too young for rodeo. NONE of them came directly from a rodeo. Rodeo stock companies do not reside in the midwest, especially my part.

It does irritate them, but it stops there. You can fit your hand between the strap and the body of the horse, and the strap is padded. Sores happen if its too tight. Kinda like a girth strap irritates a green horse, and its just as tight if not more loose. Plus they eventually learn to look at it as a cue, for when they are supposed to buck.

@mOiihh1 It's called a flank, bulls have them on aswell. The flank is tied in front of the hind legs(like almost after the cage ribs). The flank is not loose or too tight but it is used to make the animal "Think" it can kick it off-rendering it to buck. If the flank is too tight it restraints the animal's movements, and if it is too loose it may fall off. So don't worry too much about it. ^ ^' The only ones who come out abused are usualy the ones riding them. xD

Spiritmymare, yes jumping does wreck their legs on some horses over time, the concussive forces of landing on their front legs over time damages the membranes around the joints and can led to degenerative joint disease and it can also create ring bone or fractures in the legs. I haven't heard of to many horses with jumping careers that haven't had some sort of lameness or arthritis when they get to be in their late teens and twenties.

Fact I bet none of you knew: They don't put a strap on the bronces to make them buck. That's just there for looks. Actually, they do the reverse of training a horse to ride. They reward them for bucking, and they do it to get rewarded. Also, it doesn't hurt them. You watch horses out in the pasture, and they will do some of these moves all on there own. They buck and rear and jump around, if they didn't want to buck, they wouldn't, and they get sold to a new home to be re-trained. Not slaughterd

@HorseAndRider2010 It's all about form. My horse bucks just as hard as some of these saddle broncs do when she spooks. You just have to hold on tight, and when they're not in the air, you need to pull on one side of the reins as long as you're on good ground like grass or dry dirt. Never do that on pavement or wet ground, because then you'll get rolled on, or your horse will fall and turn you into a pancake. Just takes practice. Sometimes you have to fall off.

@bhsgurrl These wild and free horses are never bridled, much less bitted. They live nearly ferally in huge pastures and work at something they love and do naturally for 8 seconds at a time. All horses should have it this good.

these animals are worth mucho dollars so every precaution is taken before the rider even gets on ... flankstraps are nylon and usually covered in wool so it doesnt dig into the horse ....it does cause discomfort thats true like a tight belt would around anyone waist..... the horse wants to shake it off but it does not hurt the horse at all
@thegreatnoldini

@007saddle Exactly. It's not like the spurs are as sharp as a fucking Samurai blade lol. They're rounded and dull. The flank strap isn't even on that tight, and the horses LOVE their job. Not to mention, some of the best horses I work with up at a trail riding ranch for tourists were ex-saddle broncs and rodeo horses.

I can say it just tickles them, you put it on loose so it just touches them, the flank is very touchy, much like the bottom of your foot, so it tickles and they buck to get it off, sometimes they just fall off halfway through the ride. I would do this but I screwed up my hip when I fell of bareback at a full lope, it hurt really bad. And we were just having a nice ride, then he tried the same thing with a saddle... hehe, didn't work so great for him, that time I didn't come off, it was fun.

There are certain lines of breeding known for their predisposition for being 'broncs'. I had one. good looking, great on the ground, clipped, trimmed, brushed, saddled, bridled, but try to step on and that horse just broke in two. no good reason- saddle fit, slow kind approach. After a couple years of this, he was never ridden successfully. I gave him back to his previous owners. wasn't mean, just a bronc. Didn't need a strap either. He'd buck for at least 3 minutes after an attempt to get on.

No I haven't, but if you feel so certain that it will prevent injury, please, explain. As I cannot see how a strap of leather, whether or not it is surrounded by wool, can protect an animal for injury. Or do you mean the injury by the spurs, if this is so, then the animal doesn't buck because it loves to, but because it gets irritated because of the spurs or the buckingstrap, depending whether the horse got this last one around. Or do I completely think the wrong way, please, tell me.

standingatthedoor - I told you, I was done arguing. But here is the answer to your question AGAIN. The horse continues bucking because it is not used to the strap and (depending on your horse) either bucks to rid itself of it, or knows its job and continues to buck regardless. Some stop after the rider leaves and goes to the gate where they remove it behind the chutes. Its just a circle with you, you'll ask this question again in a few days.

same with the horses when the bronc is put in the chute an the rider puts his riggin or saddle on the flank strap is put on to, ya ever see how easy the flank is removed a hook goes in the ring on the flank an they just pull it off cause its not that tight

FACT: The flank strap is only snug for the 8 second ride and until the pick up man can get to the horse to release it. A horse that is flanked too tightly, like a horse who is girthed too tightly, will not buck.

@XxXxXRedRoanXxXxX They buck like that because they are bred and trained to, not because they're being abused. A horse's natural instinct is to buck anyway when it's scared. However, these horses learn to buck even when they aren't, and they fucking love it. My horse bucked even harder than this when a plastic bag flew into my pasture while I was breaking her in. These horses don't even get hurt, and they are very comfortable with their job.
