This band is amazing when you truly understand their aesthetics. Their evolution from first album to last album. My favorite albums are new plastic ideas and repetition. Their last album is amazing too.

I agree, Repetition and New Plastic Ideas are their best albums imo, I'm not mad that Leaves gets the most attention though because it is still an insanely good album

This music fascinates me with the constant feeling that it may fall apart any moment now but it never does and somehow it keeps moving, keeps walking and stumbling. You mentioned tension. This music is so calming for me

Unwound is my favorite band. This is from their first studio album and you may not remember but you also listened to their track terminus which is off their final album. The difference between these two tracks gives a great perspective on the evolution of the band.

This band, and this album in particular, hits me as extremely cathartic. Most of it is chaotic and depressive, but it paradoxically gives me cheery optimistic vibes

I love these three tracks but yeah this is definitely Unwound's noisiest and sloppiest phase. It's not for everyone but this is an amazing album when you get into it. In my opinion, though, I much prefer Future of What or New Plastic Ideas from this era of Unwound. The songs on those just feel tighter and hit harder imo. I don't know why but there's something about noise rock that I just love so much. The noisy squeals of the guitar don't really evoke tension, it's actually the opposite effect for me. And what I love about unwound is how they're able to make their riffs melodically interesting whilst still sounding as dirty as possible.

what a phenomenal piece of work, thanks for this you mentioned being interested in more of their songs, here's a great one within this era: "fiction friction"

Were, Are and Was or Is, bit of a perfect title for what this trio of songs is and more for what was to come. I think this essentially gives you all the style they would display but always with the backbone of dissonance and noise. Raw but telling of the future, incredible incredible band.

I cant emphasise enough how good their final album is. I truly belive its one of the all time greats. Stylistically its so different from this album but its unmistakeably those 3 people. It couldn't be anyone else, the musical chemistry they had is something truly special. They're another bit of evidence for my theroy that if you cite sonic youth as an influence you are probably a vastly more talented musican than sonic youth themsleves ever were but thats a different point entirely.

some potentially erroneous thoughts: they are one of the best bands of all time. this whole thing is that teen nihilism, slight optimism for them. i enjoyed your analysis about the idea of these feelings not being sustainable. it's interesting to hear them talk about the band itself and the things they had to deal with and some of that idea of all these feelings going around and hating it but keeping it are absolutely integral to how they played so insanely together and loved and lost. anyone into this just strongly advice getting into this band and seeing them live if you can. you will not regret it. justin trosper's lyrics and guitar, vern rumsey's (rip) insane insane insane bass playing (why i started learning), and sara lund's INCREDIBLE contributions to being the drummer for the rest of the run (and one of the few women in this scene outside of riot grrl). for prod they had no money and not as much interest also they were kids (well, young but not anymore lol). and by their mid to late 20s they did 'leaves turn inside you' their last album (w/ terminus) and it is an insane piece of work. unwound seems to either divide or become an bsession bc frankly i've never heard a band like this, not even nirvana who i love. even sonic youth (who loved them!) you mention letter and it just made me laugh; they have this song called 'envelope' from one of my fav albums by them (the one that sounds v much like SY at times tho they were more inspired by nirvana. also i love all their albums lol). this is technically their second album by the way! the first is a self titled called unwound that they didnt release until later. it would be cool to see you go though some of the favs of their work from fans!

If you told me this was a live recording I would believe you. I don’t know when this was released but it strikes me as an influence on bands like Nirvana. Oddly enough, it makes me think of walking east/west thru NYC and the sound scape you get at both the avenue intersections and the in betweens.

it was recorded in 1993 on KRS. dubbed w amplifier feedback (? idk if that's the right term) and done over like 1.5 wks. and new drummer. they are from olympia (well tumwater? idfk some place in washington lol). not rly influenced by nirvana necessarily but absorbing all the things around them at the time. unwound truly are their own band! but they def loved them and krist and kurt (lmao @ no last names like theyre my friends) threw pillows at them at a house party they performed at :P

I enjoyed this song. (Still working on the reaction.) I am generally not in the market for new noise/punk sorts of things, but I liked this enough I want to check out more. This band had gone completely under my radar. I was hardly listening to any new rock by this point in the 90's, but of course I could have discovered them in the intervening years.

I'm really into Sonic Youth's more noisier and messier albums so this stuff really does it for me. Can't find many other appreciators so i am glad you gave it a try. I would be very interested in what you think to The Diamond Sea (on Washing Machine) by Sonic Youth. It would be like a mix between noise rock (like this) and post rock. I think it gets a lot closer to this extreme sense of emotion you describe missing.

I was waiting for some kind of different crescendo or a softer part that would make the song feel more …. cohesive maybe, but it wasn’t the purpose I think, noisy and almost painful chaotic for shure and the more peaceful parts was a little boring but hard to say after a single listen. A little lame (!) actually for me and some grunge parts. In some way it was emotional though. Dark. And I usually like a lot of dark music so I can’t say it left me untouched but don’t know it is in a bad or good way. Maybe I would like to listen to some of their other tracks.

This kind of hardcore/post-hardcore genre is one I generally don't like with a handful of exceptions. I'm just not a fan of super raw production/playing and screaming in general. The kind of post-hardcore I can like is when it starts getting mixed with proggier or at least more ambitious tendencies, and this track isn't that; it's just going for super raw emotion (as your video title mentions) and it just doesn't work for me.
