I don't think the Attitude Era has an "exact" point where it definitively begins, but I'm totally of the opinion that Brian Pillman's unpredictable character got that ball rolling, and his gun segment was one of, if not the earliest examples of how "edgy" WWF could suddenly be. The network getting mad, parents complaining.. I LOVED it! This was precursor to some big shifts later on, so I think it's totally valid to see the roots of the Attitude Era starting here.

I was a teenager when it aired... well past the point of being a "smart mark" so to speak... but after the cut to black, there was still a small part in the back of my mind that said "Did Pillman really shoot Steve Austin?" So I've said before that the real architect of the attitude era is Syco Sid. Think of this, a charismatic, heelish character that seems like more of an anti-hero and gets huge positive reactions. He wears all black ring attire and a waistcoat to the ring. I'm not saying he was the prototype for Stone Cold Steve Austin's meteoric rise, but I think he primed the audience for someone like Austin. Without that heel getting cheers scenario, I don't know if things would have gone the same way.

WCW got lazy that week, & put on a painfully average show, that somehow still ended up winning, lol. Also, I had completely forgotten that WCW had promoted a women's title tournament.
