That is seriously THE BEST video on wall plugs I have ever seen on KZitem. What a brilliant video. You went thru ever single little detail. Thank you. Please please do more videos on stuff like this. Your explanation is so basic and simple and hits home with us viewers. Could you also show us how to pick screws and what the dimensions and sizes mean? For example on my rawl plug kit it says “5 x 25mm”. So does that mean that the outer diameter of the rawl plug is 25mm or is that the inner hole? And also how are screws measured? Is it the diameter of the head? Or the diameter of the with of the shaft (or whatever the long bit is called)? Or the diameter including the grooves on the shaft? I know it sounds daft…but there are probably logs of people who are clueless like me…and you have been a massive help. Many thanks

Plugs are measured by their outside diameter x their length. 5x25 means 5mm diameter plug, 25 mm long. That requires a 5 mm hole to be drilled (hole size should always match plug diameter). Screws are measured by the outer diameter of the thread x length of the screw. Example: 5x40 means 5 mm thread diameter, 40 mm long. What screw diameter you use with what plug depends on the plug, and the range of diameters it will accept, as explained in this video. The largest diameter screw a given plug can take will cause the most expansion and the most grip. But sometimes you might wanna use a smaller diameter than the max, because the plug might be spinning in the hole (soft, crumbly material such as drywall etc). Generally 6 mm plugs are very common (usually 30 mm long. so 6x30 plug, requiring 6 mm drill bit). And theyaccept 4.0 to 5.0 mm screws, 4.5 mm screws being a common diameter. I personally stock various lengths of 5mm screws, to be used with 6 mm plugs for general purpose mounting to masonry walls. I like the idea of using the max screw size for a given plug, so it's a good combo. These are the fundamentals. Now you can look at different plugs and screws and with experience you''ll have your own preference and opinions on what plugs and screws to use where. Hope it helps.

@@lancearmstrong3252 Thanks for your reply. Does M5 10G * 60mm screw mean 5 mm thread diameter, 60 mm long. I was planning to use this to a 6mm wall plug but the packet of the wall plug said that this was applicable for 8-9G screws. Would me using a 10G screw damage the wall plug? I am attaching timber onto brick. Thanks

@cglees

Hi thanks 😊. I had that problem in another house, crumbly plaster. Depends what you are hanging - I wouldn’t trust a TV. Maybe try marking the outline of the TV bracket on the wall and cut away all of the plaster and then fix the bracket directly to what is behind the plaster. Should be timber or blockwork. Other option is to remove all of the crumbly plaster and then use filler to make the wall good.

@@jarilouhelainen51 Yes I think I remember from buying these type of plugs since I posted this comment that it suggests drilling a longer hole for the end of the screw. @@cglees Are you getting a kick back from Rawl, whoever they are? I came away from watching it thinking I need to go out and buy a whole new supply of wall plugs (the generic term) making sure I get the 'Rawl' brand. Many of us have loose, unbranded plugs which are probably perfectly good but we don't have the sizing strips. We still need to match plug to screw and bit so if you genuinely want to de-mystify the process without concentrating on just one brand and if you want help those of us who are struggling, perhaps you could shoot another of your excellent videos covering such situations.
