I interpreted that Ray died at the end. Thats why he jumped into the pool with Mick as a child. He swims to the top of the water into the light. Then he walks out of the pool with his suit on. I believe he died in the back of the ambulance. There is some grey area here not as bad as The Sopranos but happy we get some ending to the story. I can't see the series moving forward from here. I liked the movie and thought it tied a lot of things in the series together from beginning to end.

I read an interview about that scene where Liev said it was Ray being cleansed, sort of reborn, made anew from his past. I will say for the sake of tv/movies as an art form, scenes like this are open to interpretation, which I like as someone whose spent a good portion of my life writing music/lyrics and a BA in Creative Writing/Literature. Ray could’ve very well died in the ambulance and the pool scene is what he’s seeing while his life leaves his body. I appreciate your interpretation!

The whole Bridget killing Mick was just nonsensical and unrealistic and weak for the plot. Mick was the soul of the show, he couldn't have died such a pathetic death. Yeah to think Bridget had this vengeance on her mind, when she’s barely gone through what Ray & his brother went through for decades, just to take Bunch’s car, gun and shoot Mick without hesitation was nonsense. In earlier seasons she had no I’ll-will towards Mick. Now she’s just ready to kill him bc her husband was in the wrong place at the wrong time? I get it, Mick is responsible for a lot of shit going south, but she doesn’t/didn’t deserve the credit for Mick’s death.

So I actually have a lot to comment on this movie- for what it’s worth lol.. I actually watched it twice, after the first time, decided to go back in time and re watch from season 1 bc there was so much I had forgotten. So at the end of the movie, I definitely was left wanting more, but not sure the ending is what I was really wanting or expecting. But as far as the dissatisfaction of Bridget being the one to kill Mickey, I honestly disagree and think it was a great way to surprise us bc I’m sure we all assumed Ray would’ve been the one to ultimately end Mickeys life at some point. But for the sake of the show and it being the last, I think it would’ve been a little too predictable & the writers wanted to shock us. And they did- for those saying Bridget had no real reason to kill Mickey, I disagree. I think there was nobody more perfect to have a reason at this point in time to put an end to his life. In season 7 we got to see a taste of Bridget sort of taking on similarities of her father, and in short she did go through plenty of trauma throughout the seasons. She witnessed her boyfriend being killed in cold blood, her mother died in front of her, she got kidnapped & witnessed all of those cops being murdered & chopped up etc, not that Mickey was to blame for all these incidents but she endured plenty. I think by the end of this story it makes perfect sense that she “robbed” Ray of saying his goodbyes or spilling from the heart to Mickey bc if you remember she had part in that same “robbery” when it came to Abby’s death. Some could argue that but Ray definitely placed some of that blame on her when he returned to Abby’s bar after she passed and confronted Bridge asking why she didn’t call etc. Besides all this- I think she thought this is what her father ultimately wanted. For Mickey to be taken out- and for the bullshit to end. She didn’t know Ray was in a place of forgiveness, or that he himself was on the verge of possibly dying. She thought she was doing what needed to be done, and what no one else probably would have done. She thought she was putting an end to perhaps having her future turn out the way Rays did. As for the show making a return in some way, I don’t think they can at this point. I agree that Mickey was such a huge part of the story and is what kept us all wondering what will he do next- as much as I would have loved to see how his & Rays relationship would have unfolded from that day forward he’s gone now and unless they bring him back from the dead lol I can’t imagine what more they can do with Rays character other than show us if he went to prison or was able to “fix” his situation somehow. Maybe it’s possible that Bridget gets a spin off and has a similar dynamic with her father getting out of prison and causing her life to be turned upside down OR- Conor returns from the Marines and takes on a Ray Donovan like persona with all new characters 🤷♀️ .. all the other key players of the show really don’t have much room for a future as Darryl is gone, Bunchy is questionably going to try to repair his family’s future, and Terry is on his last legs with the Parkinson’s. Seems his mental health is declining based on the scene that he’s having dinner with his young/late family members.. I just don’t see what else they can do to revive the show even if they wanted to, sadly. Bc it really is one of my favorites and I’m sad to see it go for good.

I agree, it was definitely a surprise and the writers did it for the shock value. Not to mention, here we are talking about it after the series is over. I think Bridget knew that her father / Ray wouldn't be able to pull the trigger, and he didn't (or couldn't), so she had enough reasoning (as you stated from seasons past) and was willing to get the job done. I really enjoyed the show/series overall, especially those early seasons! I don't think they'll bring the show back, at least not with the brothers. Perhaps they'll do a spin-off, but will people really enjoy or want to see it? Maybe with the hope that we'd see Liev make some cameo appearances in/out of jail into the future. It might be best for it to end here though. Really appreciate the well-thought out comment Krista! =)

I didn’t like it…yes Mickey wasn’t the best… but so many times he saved Rays ass. And there were several things Ray remembered wrong from the past… like he swore up and down that Mickey broke his sister’s arm when she was a kid… but Bunchy and his other brother confirmed Mickey had nothing to do with it…I think Ray had some kind of mental illness brought on by trauma or whatever… but he had a lot of misplaced anger for Mickey. Also he could kill people he wanted to kill… but curse Mickey to hell for killing people HE had to kill… the same mentality as Bridget… curse her family to hell for being killers… but here she goes killing someone because she wanted to. She’s as bad as they are considering she’s a girl and hasn’t had 1/2 the trauma they have.

What I think happened is Ray jumping into the water and coming out as a kid as he was dying was him finally forgiving Micky and him forgiving himself. He has accepted to also go to jail, so I don't think he dies, (he was ready to die). I think we might get another movie or mini series in the future though, with someone high up wanting Ray to fix something for him/her, that's why they left the series open ended.
@TheReelHeroesShow

Definitely a metaphorically scene. I too think he was ready to die/move on from this life, which could also be metaphorical. I read an interview recently where Liev said the following: “When I was acting it, the way I was thinking about it is, you know when people have out-of-body experiences? That’s what that was. We spent all this time on these two-time continuums: one is old Ray, and one is present Ray. For me, it felt like that wasn’t so much a ghost of Ray, but it was the conscience and consciousness of Ray seeing things separate from them.” The water, Schreiber added, symbolizes “a new, clean Ray. It’s a baptism. In the Roman Catholic tradition, which Ray is from, there’s that sense of revival and renewal and confession. Getting that piece off of his chest (forgiving his father) creates a shiny, new Ray, in a way.” I could see a potential future plot maybe in 15~ years. Liev is 54 right now, so an older Ray around his late 60's, mirroring Mickey being old when he was released from jail. An old fixer, perhaps something Bridget is mixed up with.

My opinion: I gave it a 6.5 out of 10, for them it was hard to try and bookend a storyline that was suppose to be a whole season into basically an extended episode be it was only an hour and a half. You get the idea that Bunchi went to work things out with Teresa and Daryl is in a whole other country probably on the run but what happens with Terry? Also they kinda just wrote out Connor, you don't even hear references about him at all. I'd have liked for them to had brought him back in and I hate they killed Mick off also would've liked to have seen Avi come back as well. His shenanigans mostly is what kept the show going so with him gone it kinda ties everything up. I've went back and started watching again from season 1, damn it was a good show 💯

Yeah they could have made it much more dramatic and a little bit longer. Little late to the comments with this one but I remember it being a pretty solid film, I just like the guy they cast as young micky, he also played a young Jeff bridges in “the old man”. His performance in both is amazing. I feel like when Bridget killed micky she was just putting an end to it. Mick always had a way of getting back in with the people he hurt. And maybe for once in his life he was truly trying to just help someone without some self interest. So I feel like there’s something pretty deep about that. I’d probably give it at least an 8/10

Yeah the cops would probably figure out the bullet inside Ray’s gut doesn’t match any firearm at the scene and I think you’re right, Ray won’t give up Molly because of what he did and prob bc he has some sorta feelings for her. Although, maybe not as much after getting shot. I honestly didn’t expect Bridgette to kill Mickey since the entire time she seemed concerned like Ray was gonna do it and she’d try to stop him. Sure, if might be “twist” that we were led to think that, but Ray was robbed from telling his father what he really needed to say. I wonder if they’d do a season like 10-20 years from now, Ray gets outta jail, brothers pick him up, tries to find his new life, but hasn’t forgiven Bridgette either. It could be tough to pull off a worthwhile season in the future.

I honestly thought this movie was pretty bad. That's what happens when you try to rush things. There's several shows that ended up being cancelled before its proper time. They should've at least had a f*ckn' conversation about this show before deciding to pull the plug like they did. Trying to squeeze 12 episodes into a 1hr & 40min movie (or just 2 episodes of 50min each), doesn't work. Daryll didn't even show up in the movie; that girl from Ray's office (the other hacker) made a random appearance as well; Ray's son didn't even show up; there's a lot of things that could've been properly made if the final season was made. Bunchy could've gone to see his daughter and maybe he would've had a happy ending; Terry could've had some proper ending as well. All this sh*t was just ridicul0us.

I didn’t like the ending. Ray deserved better. I would’ve like Ray to make amends with Mick, have Bridget enter the room and kill Mick, before Ray succumbed to his injuries. They also could’ve had Ray make amends with Mick before Bridget kills him and have Ray survive his injuries. Ray would of course cover for Bridget and make it look like someone else had murdered Mick. Ray would have now have the ability to live a peaceful life free of Mick and his drama while knowing he had made amends with Mick before his death.

Yeah it's bad enough Ray is taking the blame for Bridget, really the load for the entire family. At the very least, he should've been able to say goodbye and that he loved Mick.

However, how would Mickey feel if he heard Ray admit it was him who set him up all this time to go to jail in the first place, lol.

@@skywalker6648 Ray did admit it to Mickey, he said "What I did to you, I want you to know you didn't deserve that, fish gotta swim" Mickey knows what he means and then does his little dance to keep Ray awake.

Ray Donovan is dead. He dies in the ambulance and you see him swim into the light at the end. They did the same with Dexter, James Bond, Iron Man etc. Killing the lead man. Hollywood is so predictable. I find these endings very disappointing and unsatisfying. I didn't enjoy this and would give it 4 out of 10.

I guess the pros of this Ray Donovan: The movie is that there was finally a conclusion for the show. Some of the cons is that unfortunately, it also seems to highlight the biggest problem of the last season. Which is mostly how the show basically ran out of interesting story lines. It's like once Ray moved to NYC, it started going downhill. So, if you're looking for a finale that is better than the last season, you will be disappointed. If you just wanted some more Ray and Mickey action with some kind of ending to their twisted family and relationship dynamics, you kind of got it. Btw, funny how Ray's own son just disappeared.

Yeah that about sums it up! I think that was one of the better things about season 7's finale - the way it ended with the shootings, Bridge's husband getting in the mix of things, paid with his life tragically. I think they could've gotten half a season's worth with a potentially better story by bringing Ray's son back into the picture. He's missed out on a lot that happened.

0 interest in that if they do that I'm not usually one that says they wont watch spin offs (I even said I'd give a Harrison spinoff a chance from Dexter) but I refuse to let that little asshole shine in her own show lol.

Welcome to Simpville, Beantown style. Should have named this, The Trouble with Bridget. Of course, all the wacky females get to reappear for one last stab in the gut, never liked any of their characters, and the whole Bridget thing really screwed it up...if she wanted some finality she should have ended it for herself and died a long time ago, do we forget the show history and all the trauma, drama she's been in? Glad for the movie, but in true wokeness they took one of the most raw gritty quality shows with strong male characters and turned it into a female drama filled lifetime movie with a few gunshots. Never liked Bridge, and in true woke fashion the screwed up what could have been a doable ending. Thanks Netflix.

Yeah I think the other issue with this is trying to cram all this into a movie instead of a season with 10-12 episodes.

@@TheReelHeroesShow Right, not enough build up for character to go completely off the rails. But I wouldn't say this had anything to do with "female empowerment wokeness". Just poor ideas in the story boardroom, lol.

So I’m assuming after Bridget kills Mickey, Ray has Bunchie take her out of the Motel away from the Shooting Scene, Ray takes the rap for the shooting and goes to Prison, which was the ending of the show!! 💯🫵🏽

Having watched all 7 seasons & the movie - 1stly it is an excellent series , well written good stories but tends to go into a flat tailspin 1/2 way thru s5. The writers r obviously from my era - hints in names & cameo perfromances by a- list actors - mickey spillane writer of mike hammer novels & a tiny part for stacy keach. Name darryl seems to be from bob newhart show ( i'm darryl , dis my brother darryl & my uder brother darryl - 3 southern rednecks ) , ray - probably from ray romano bec. Of the character upbringing of his series. That said the film was more waterworks & seemed to rushed to end it off. Given that a merger was behind killing it off it either hit a nerve on n.y real estate & other sordid ways of hollywood & financing. Kinda met the same fate of a canadian series which exposed weaknesses in the canadian govt's depts wrt drugs , chinese ccp & fbi - the series was canned abruptly. ( food 4 thought ?) After 7 seasons though repetitive it grows on you so im gonna add my name to the of disgruntled fans !
