What you really need is a Personal Locator Beacon. For anyone wondering why there was food and water still left on the Lady Be Good plane, the crew parachuted out when their fuel ran out and the plane carried on another 16 miles and was lost to them. That’s why they only had half a canteen of water. One of them died when his parachute didn’t open properly and the others were able to find each other in the dark with flares and pistol shots. They headed north but the really sad thing is that if they’d known where they were they could have gone south the same distance and reached an oasis. It’s also amazing that in 20 years their bodies weren’t covered by sand.

the one who died while his parachute failed to open was the luckiest one of the lot. I also wonder if they had pistols why didn't they shoot themselves when it became obvious (as it must have done) they were never going to have the strength to carry on.

The Atacama desert is the driest in the World. I have been there in a car on the highway to the abandoned nitrate mines. When I think about it we were desperately under prepared if anything had gone wrong. We were fairly close to a highway and trucks on that road would have seen us but really even a few hours in that place in the open was utterly draining.

In my opinion rays mears is better at servival than any other servival experts like bear grylls and dual servival as they rush things to get the job or task done as quickly as possible whereas ray takes his time and thinks things tgrough thourorghly and thereforw males litpe mistakes. He doesnt fake senarios either - for example: bear grylls stays the nights in hotels except if hes doing something like a special weekend episode but ray mears does.

1-4: The Sahara Desert is dry because it has a water deficit (more water leaves than arrives). The Sahara Desert is surrounded by water (Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea) but the water does not hydrate the landmass. Water is kept out of Sahara by mountains along oceanfront. The minuscule amount of moisture eventually exits the Sahara Desert to the south and east as it is blown on the wind. Because of the preceding; Sahara is expanding to the south as evidenced by the now dry Lake Chad.

3-4: Further canal efforts from Chott el Jerid south and west into Algeria’s below-sea-level areas and also east across Libya to Egypt’s Qattara Depression will allow more surface area of water and thus more moisture to be deposited into the atmosphere. The water will return as clean fresh water rain which will encourage plant growth. The return of plants will be from the south in the opposite direct of its departure. Lake Chad will refill.

4-4: The concept of a canal system into the Sahara from the Mediterranean Sea is not new. A hundred years ago the French spent many francs researching this idea. For some dramatized discussion; read: Invasion of the Sea (French: L'Invasion de la mer) by: Jules Gabriel Verne’s book. To accomplish this will: Locally; bring water to many and along with water comes hope; Globally; allowing the water into Sahara will reduce the sea level a bit and a re-hydrated Sahara will reduce global warming.

moondancekid1 I disagree: at 8:25 it certainly sounds as if he says 40 litres, not 14, and even if it was an accent thing hard to spot for foreigners, just look at the tanks of water...if you've ever filled your fuel tank at a gas station you know they look way more like tanks of 20 lts each, not of 7 lts each... . Talking litres
@giammira
9 жыл бұрын
moondancekid1 Let me show it better: 1 litre is a cube of water (at 4 Celsius) of 10 cm side lenght, that is 1 dm side, given by 1 (dm) at the cubic factor = 1 (lt), so the reverse gives that 1 lt at the cube root equals 1 dm (side lenght of a cube of water). Same goes with 20 litres that are equal to a cube of water with side the cube root of 20 expressed in dm, that is slightly over 2,7 dm (2,7x2,7x2,7 = 19,68), which means 20 litres are contained in a cube of water of about 27 cm side. That looks the size of those tanks. A 7 lt tank would be a cube of water with side lenght slightly under 20cm (1,9x1,9x1,9 = 6,86) and those tanks are bigger than that... . It's somehow surprising how just 8 more cm (27-19) of increase of the water cube side lenght, that is less than half the side lenght of a 7 lt tank, mean an increase in water content of almost the triple (to reach 20 lt). Magics of cubic factors....

Let me jump in on this 6 years later! Sorry I was in the loo😆 Definitely says 40 litres, those are two 20 litre containers. He must be having a shower every day and don’t forget he’s driving a Land Rover, he probably has to top up the radiator every hour. Note his crew are following him in a Toyota or a Nissan, so they can pick up the pieces that fall off his Landy.
