I remember that fight well; everything looked good for The Duke (RIP) in the early rounds, though Ray’s ability to shrug off some really hard punches hinted at trouble ahead for Tommy. When Tommy started to tire, Ray caught him w/a few clean shots, from which Tommy never really recovered. Thus, it was that “Merciless” Mercer stone chin that made all the difference. Tommy simply couldn’t absorb the same level of punishment, at least not to the head. Ray had one of the best chins in boxing.

Tommy Morrison was in my opinion the best white heavyweight ever. And I'm not talking about wins, I'm talking about skills. Besides Lennox Lewis throwing the hook to the body and the upper cut to the head, Morrison threw that punch combo perfect. But the king of that punch combo was Mike Tyson. I believe his health and drug issues took a lot from him, I feel he would've made more noise in the heavy weight division🥊

Tommy was getting off like crazy on Ray and he just ate all that shit. Then he came back and destroyed Tommy while a few clean hard shots got in while he was completely defenseless. The ref made sure no one would accuse him of a premature stoppage, Got DAYUM.

I remember when these two started their careers...I loved watching both of them rising in the ranks and didn't expect either of these guys to dominate the other but I was wrong, Ray was the better man that night.

I remember this fight. Tommy took an unnecessary beating partially because he wasn't in good shape he always had issues with stamina.. Secondly, Ray Mercer has a granite chin those uppercuts would have put anyone else to sleep. Make no mistake. Tommy can punch .

Mercer knew Tommy always had low stamina. He always seemed to fade after the 4th or 5th round. So he took some punishment early and then did his thing…mercilessly! 😬

Tommy should have won that fight. He was on oil based steroids and was depending on to knock Mercer out early. He almost had Mercer!! But by round 5 he was wore out from not training hard enough and all the partying . Tommy could have been a better fighter if not for his life style of women and partying. Both those men were absolutely warriors in their day. Both those men turned many of their opponents lights out viciously. Knockouts are one of the biggest thrills in boxing. I'm all for the big KOs. But this one was hard to watch when it happened and still hard to watch today. Tony Perez should have lost his license for letting Morrison get obliterated while having both arms wide open and one tangles in the ropes. I get it, things happen fast in the ring. I boxed, I coached, I've been in the ring. 4, 5, 6, even 8 punches can be like the snap of your fingers. But as a ref, you are responsible for keeping those men as safe as possible in a deadly combat sport. I'm not saying it's easy. But this was one of those clear cut, GET YOUR ASS IN THERE AND STOP THIS, moments. Morrison should have never received the 3rd and 4th blow. That was either incompetence on Perez's part or someone made a LOT of money that day.

Tommy was very nice not to throw that Punch when he could have during the ref break up.He held that Punch like Tight Woods does when he gets distracted on his back swing. Rayon the other hand kept hitting Tommy when he knew he was out.And shame on the Referee too
