Ray Noble composed this beautiful number, and sang by Al Bowlly with such feeling....pure magic. Ray actually wrote and orchestrated quite a few tunes in the day.

Is this the most wonderful blend of voice to dance band ever recorded no wonder it stayed on the catalogues from 1931 to 1938, I'll never tire of hearing it.

I'm 20 and love this music. Al and hutch are probbably my favourite singers. 2 weeks ago i finally started going out with a girl I've been wanting to date for 4 years or more, and our common interest in jazz and the fact we both got laughed at for being/dressing what was deemed as oldfassioned by our fello college kids was what got us talking. She loves this music, as do I, wonderful stuff.

I just love this clip, it made me laugh till I cried. Chaplin's expert timing and comic genius, coupled with this amazing song. I played this song at my Dad's 80th birthday when he asked me to 'DJ' for his great party in 2004. Dad's no longer with us now, but the beautiful echoes of long ago are still loud and clear. Great upload, thanks.

Well into the seventies the little resident octet at our local dance hall played this as their closer. Those Saturday nights still hold fond memories for me. Everyone waiting for the doors opening at seven sharp with the women clutching the carrier bags containing the silver dance shoes for her and patent leather ones for us men. Listening to this l really miss those days of tangos, quicksteps and waltzes, and the reflections from the slowly turning mirror ball...Ah me !

There's nothing like singing this song (or merely playing it, even) for someone you love. Al Bowlly was the best vocalist Ray Noble ever worked with in my opinion. If it wasn't for the Blitz which destroyed London (and killed Al), he would have been a bigger star.

Me again- wonderful; recording- thanks so much. By the way, for those younger folks who might not know, Charlie is on a Murphy Bed- made to save space by folding into the wall- we had one when I was a kid a million years ago. When my Mum used to sing me this great old tune.

Rudy Vallee introduced the song in the U.S. in '31 (and cut himself into a composing credit on sheet music copies, claiming to have written the "American Version", even though Ray Noble was responsible for writing it, with Jimmy Campbell and Reg Connelly). In the late '40s, it was used as the closing theme for radio's "THE ADVENTURES OF SAM SPADE". Most people know it from the 1967 "STAR TREK" episode "The City On the Edge Of Forever", in a scene featuring William Shatner and Joan Collins.

@sandygran I'm so sorry. What a wonderful memory though. My mother used to sing it to me, and it always brings a tear to hear it. Hard to believe 73 years later I was ever anyones "sweetheart". I think Ray Noble wrote this tune by the way- classic dance band from the 30's. back when they wrote songs with some romance and sentiment to them. Sigh.

speak for yourself, I think most modern music is trash, and I'm only 26. Id rather listen to Andrews sisters over 'super hardcore dubstep remix overload', anyday. IMO things started getting really sour in the 90's. Sure, there's still SOME good stuff out there, that doesn't rely on synthesizers and pitch benders to work, but they're far and few. Did you mean natural regression? lol
