This was a great break. He was a quality player. Note how fluent he was, and he had time for a laugh. Also, players of that era were working the clubs most nights throughout the country doing exhibitions. Their pioneering afforded the generations that followed the opportunity to make a hell of a lot more money.

So lovely to see the joy in the crowd. I started watching snooker in the early '80s and it wasn't so different then. Big breaks were more common than in 1971 but nothing like as much as today. In some ways it was more special when they were rarer.

Easy for people to say “this is easy for pros now” but the balls they were using back then were much heavier, and the baize was much thicker and less responsive, so it was much harder to impart spin of any kind. This is an amazing break!

I remember those old tables and heavy balls. I also remember how large the pockets were compared to todays tables lol. It’s ok to admit that the standard has massively improved over the years, let’s face it Davis improved the game massively and the tables and balls Werner a million times better than the ones reardon would have played on.

Great piece of archive footage, thanks for posting! You can really see (and especially hear) how heavy those old balls were, and appreciate how much skill and control it took to manoeuvre them around... the most telling bit for me is when RR runs out of position with the break on 13, and the commentator calls a safety shot - just assumes Reardon will never attempt what would now be a pretty routine shot for any professional (and lots of club amateurs). That's how the game's developed... but as others have pointed out, it was like a different game with this sort of set-up...

As Reardon once said "you won't win 6 world championships with defense" and this break certainly shows Ray could attack almost as well as he could defend when the form hit him.Truly an all time great and always came across as a nice bloke.

First place in the 1971 Park Drive 600, was £600. This was an invitational tournament played over two days with a best of seven frames final. Reardon won the tournament and the high break prize, claiming an additional £129. £729 in 1971 would be equal to £13,183 in 2023 purchasing power. Sure, it's not what players make today, but I wouldn't call 13 grand "peanuts", for two days work...
