SSD easy heat fix: I just tested a Fujipoly 1.5mm thermal pad (stacked x2 over controller chip, single thickness elsewhere) and it drops the SSD temps 20C! Woohoo! That allows it to use the bottom cover as a heatsink for serious heat dispersion. Now the SSD averages 30C at idle and 49C when running the CrystalDiskMark SSD benchmark.

I saw this upload and thought, "ugh, another 20 min review on a top-end laptop way outside my price-range with premium but pricey features that won't trickle down to consumer-grade devices." Well, about 10-min in, this is probably the best laptop review you've made. It's not the most detailed, but it's hit more important points than any other video I can think of. I really appreciate the brief mention and recommendation for ThrottleStop. Lisa clearly knows her audience, and knows that this little mention wouldn't confuse less technical viewers but would inform the kinds of enthusiasts who buy these products of the tinkering potential of this laptop. This is the kind of stuff that gets asked on forums and might get one or two responses a few months later. Nothing is "crispy" or "fresh." The display is "x nits" and the CPU temperature "x degrees," and are then compared to other laptops in the class so we can see if it's stands up to the competition. The video isn't a 8-min pan-and-scan that should have been a gallery, or an hour-long ramble full of circular diction. Lisa's videos are always genuine, well-edited, and above all-else informed/informative. I don't want my neighbor's kid recommending me a laptop. I want that person with a career in tech, a lifelong passion for content creation, and tinkers just enough to give me a sense of the device. I'm not getting a Razer laptop and their vapor chamber implementation is definitely not going to appear on non-gaming laptops, but I definitely have a better appreciation for the device and what it offers to its target market.

I bought this along with a Core v2 (with my current GTX 1080 inside). I do VR development on it all day 5 days a week, and game on it when I'm not working. I use an Oculus Rift. Heat-wise, the Core really helps when using it all day. The laptop doesn't generate nearly as much heat with the Core which is good for all day use. None of the VR sensors or VR headset USBs would work on the Core, but luckily this laptop has 3 usb ports, so between that and a USB hub I could plug them in there. Then connect my other peripherals on the Core. Then I can unplug only 4 cables to bring my lapotp with me on the go! Although it does run pretty hot, but I do run it in gaming mode.

Hi Lisa! Been watching you for many years and love your channel! Thank you for bringing up the issue with the R Shift key. You just breathed new life out of my old 2nd Gen Razer Blade. I travel quite a bit for work and the thin and light form factor is ideal for gaming in a hotel room (like you said), but not so much for MS Office work. My biggest gripe with all Razer laptops is the lack of dedicated Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys. I do a lot of work in Excel and Word, and not having those dedicated keys makes me less productive. I know Razer provides a workaround with the Fn+arrow keys, but the muscle memory on my old, worn-out, fingers just won't cooperate! It never dawned on me to re-purpose the arrow keys with the Synapse software! (I never use the arrow keys, either). Keep up the great product reviews!

The Lenovo seemed to have some driver issues though according to the reviewer. Name of video is: The Best All-Round Gaming Notebook of 2019? Legion Y740 Review

I just found out about an obscure gaming laptop that seems like it needs more attention (like a review from MobileTechReview). The Tongfang GK5CN5Z is one of those "generic" laptops that gets customized and resold under different names. American sellers include CyberPowerPC, Eluktronics, and MainGear. The great thing is that it's a light, thin-bezel 15.6" laptop with a mechanical keyboard, including a numeric keypad. Previously it seemed impossible to get more than two of (compact, powerful specs, good keyboard). It might be the best option right now for some of us who hate chiclet keyboards and/or want extra keys to remap. The biggest flaw, from my perspective, is that it has no Thunderbolt port. The only GPU options are 1050Ti and 1060, and the lack of Thunderbolt 3 means you can't add an eGPU. Also, small battery, and it's not the thinnest chassis around. Lots of discussion and links to European/Asian sellers here: forum.notebookreview.com/threads/tongfang-gk5cn5z.815943/

+Aaron Gallagher New products take time to launch dude. Most smaller gaming laptops only started getting high refresh rates in 2017 (last year). Razer launched their last laptop in April 2017 (7700hq, 1060), they launched the razer phone in November 2017, Now they launched their newer 8th gen laptops in early 2018. Even the Aero 15X and MSI Stealth series just started getting high refresh rates standard in 2018. I'm waiting for their next refresh with Nvidia's newer gpus (8750h + 1160/1170).

the problem with a 2k+ GAMING laptop not having an Ethernet port is that any real gamer would want the best most stable connection possible. granted most serious gamers would use a desktop. having the portability of something like this is a good option for some of us on the go. but removing the Ethernet port on such a premium priced laptop is not a good move. especially being that other brands have much stronger gaming laptops for nearly 1k less than this. that's a steep price for looks

Your temps really surprised me...negatively. With that beefy cooling system I was really expecting better temps. From what I remember my stock Blade 14’s in the past had very similar, if not identical temperatures under load. Seems like all laptops now have very similar temps and the only true fix is liquid metal, undervolting the CPU and Fuji thermal pads as replacements. For me there are better options out there. I love the GX501 Zephyrus. I don’t use laptops on my lap and more so as portable workstations, so battery life/Optimus are useless to me. I love the keyboard that’s pushed forward; perfect for gaming. I’ve always hated resting my hands on a sweaty palmrest, which also erodes the finish over time. It’s great that we have so many options for lots of different needs and preferences now, but I was definitely expecting more from that cooling system. It’s almost as if they didn’t change anything.

I bought a blade 15 144hz fhd 1070max-q 512gb at launch. Awesome raw power, good chassis and form factor but horrible display quality. Sad to say I had to return mine to Razer as it had excessive backlight bleed for a panel replacement. On return, it still had horrible bleed (i never noticed any with MacBooks or Acer ultrabooks, I use both OS) and ended up selling after 4 months. Lastly, the power brick is heavy and humongous so beware if you are planning to travel with this.

Really good review and I think the first in-depth review so far! I’m really torn between this one and the GS65. I did test the MSI and it was quite good but the difficult upgradability was turning me away, as did the weird font on its keyboard. I do enjoy the cleaner look of the Blade and the easier upgradability. Not really too heartbroken about the still missing lighting of the secondary functions; I made it work with my Blade Stealth too after all. I also prefer the top-firing speakers as opposed to the bottom-firing ones on the GS65. I do want to know though, since it wasn’t mentioned in the review: what’s the quality of the speakers on the Blade? I know the ones on the Aero 15x are basically crap and the ones on the GS65 are pretty decent. I do want to use this for music production though and I’m not going to be using headphones all the time (will also use this for media consumption so there’s that too) so it’s important for me to have a good set of speakers. They’re probably not MacBook Pro level but I’d at least want them close to that. Any info on that?

nice that you were able to drop the temp of the SSD, my other concern is that the heat is a battery killer. at my times with blade 14, the wrist rest area never got that hot, if this one gets extremely hot i feel like it will decrease the battery longevity, so I wonder if cover it with aluminum tape will isolate it from the heat.

So what's the battery life? I noticed you talk a lot about battery, switchable graphics, charger but never actually said how many hours it works with battery.

Love your reviews!! I am predominately looking at this laptop as a content creator; photography and videos. Would you recommend the 4k screen or staying with the matte screen?

Great video! I'm hoping to buy an Asus Strix Scar II, I hope you'll review that machine too.

Great review. Disappointing to hear how warm it gets to the touch.
