Thanks Man! Highly appreciated!! And yeah, you basically described my goal when I created this channel: offer in-depth tech content in a much easier and digestible format than long VOD streams. I know long format content is not for the masses, but I also know that this is precisely the type of content I always look for when I'm serious about buying or DIYing something. After a year and half since I posted this video, this modded keyboard is still my travel companion (for any trip longer than a couple of days where I’ll need to get real work done). And considering how much cheaper it is today (compared to its launch price), it gets even more appealing for 60% lovers looking for a light, portable and silent keyboard. I guess there is a case to be made for a wireless version of this keyboard at some point (which would make it even better for travel), but, other than that, it’s a nice little work (and gaming) horse!

I love these "upgrading pre-build keyboards" videos. Surprisingly, the S-tier custom mechs have less technical variety as the switches and stabs are always the same, the difference is mostly visual. This video and Taeha's in which he completely changes a Ducky One 2 mini make me want to transform my old Keychron K6 (my first) rather than get a new keyboard.

I agree 100%!!! Modding pre-build keyboards was always my passion since I got my first Cherry MX based board years ago. So many possibilities!! And while I do appreciate luxury customs for what they are (and I'll do those on this channel too), I have to say that turning a $100 keyboard into something that looks and feels two or three times as much is way more exciting to me. It is far more challenging than getting a custom kit that you just have to put it together (and thus why it is more fun :).

Nevermind the 1k subs, this kind of production level is through the roof! If I didn't notice your subs number, I would've thought you're another established big youtuber. I've watched all your videos since then and honestly always managed to do so without skipping. Idk how you did it, but you made your vids so engaging and informative at the same time which is impressive. Are you also a teacher perhaps? LOL Well regarding the keyboard, to me, the only thing that comes to mind when looking at big brands like this is their annoying "proprietary" stuff, which usually limits their ability to be modded. Thus quickly steers some people away from them. But these switches held their ground well enough, when you show the end comparison to your completely souped-up GMMK, people might just really consider it if it fits their use case (silent from the get go and even more so if you're willing to mod once and probably just be done with it. Or probably wanting the ultimate RGB machine? Idk haha). Speaking of silent switches, what's your opinion on budget silent switches like Outemu silents? They're the cheapest silent option that I know of and I'd like to know your insight on them when compared to their much more refined version such as Bobagum. Probably would help others who would like to get their keyboard silenced at a budget or restricted to Outemu-only board. Anyway, huge props to your work, Sam. Here's to the upcoming cool videos and incoming million subs, keep it up! And sorry for the unwarranted wall of text xD

Wow! Thanks man!! Really appreciate your nice words! Feedback like this is what motivates content creators like me to keep grinding :) And while I'm not a teacher, my first job (a looong time ago XD) was as a temp English teacher, so maybe that counts? Lol But as for making engaging videos (especially long form like I do in this channel), I think it comes down to making the kind of video I would like to watch. I have nothing against short video reviews, but I always miss in-depth detailed products analysis on KZitem, since most content creators think that if they make videos longer than 15 minutes, they'll be punished by the YT algorithm or something... I hope I can prove wrong all these "gurus" who say long form content doesn't work on KZitem. So far, I have to say I'm very happy with the channel growth after just 5 videos. So maybe there is some method to my madness... 😂 The other aspect of it, is producing a video that has a consistent "story", which requires writing a proper script of course (which I suspect is something most KZitemrs don't have the patience to do). As for Silent Outemus, the only one I tried (outside of the Gazzew line, which is awesome) is the Outemy Sky, which I can 100% recommend as a fantastic Cherry MX Clear clone! But I suspect you're asking about the cheaper silent Greys and Whites and, while I have never tried them before, I believe their lower prices are due to looser manufacturing tolerances. But I don't see that as an impediment to try them out for a budget build. I see these switches kind-of like Gateron Yellows: they are obviously not Gateron's top of the line (such as Inks), but they're good enough and cheap enough that you can buy 10 or 20 extra switches to replace the bad ones that are likely to come in a 70 or 90 switches bag (given the looser manufacturing tolerances for these types of budget switches). In fact, if I ever come around to build a budget silent board, I'll probably do exactly that.

I have been daily driving this board for a few years now, having only just recently gotten a handful of Keychron V series (V1 Max for the living room, V5 for the office). Sure those boards sound and feel better than the mini, but post modded, I'd say the Huntsman still one of my favourite boards for mixed used. One thing I've grown to appreciate is the North Facing LED's, which I've been finding on the Keychrons to peek just under the keycaps and the angle kinda shines in my eyes, and finding south shine through keycaps has been a nightmare. This board can easily just be shifted to a low white or a dull red, meaning for low to no light scenarios it holds up kinda better than my other boards. Speaking of keycaps, Razer really hit it out of the park with these PBT double shot keycaps as they've held out pretty well over the years of strenuous use, at the very least, compared to other keycaps. Only my WASER are smoother than the rest of the keycaps, as is a one inch stretch of my space bar, but it's only noticeable if you are looking for it. Normally, I would start getting chatter after a year or two, having to replace a key switch or three, but this board is still going strong. But this board is so easy to mod compared to other boards which needs substantial disassembling to do so. The layers have become so second nature to me, I've used QMK/VIA on my other boards to mimic this one, even though they physically have the keys I'm just using with layers (on the mini, my caps lock is another FN key, where the \| key is layered to be my caps lock) which has substantially sped up my layer use. On top of their 'hypersense' compatibility with my mice and tartarus keypad, it's easy to keep my productivity going through synapse. I like QMK/VIA, but Razer's cross peripheral interactivity is really hard to one-up. I really feel like this board is kinda underappreciated due to it being a gaming board from Razer. Also, spied the Tartarus keypad in this video and in your most recent one (the Platinum PT990), so nice to see your still driving that keypad 😎

Man, did you ever think about doing product reviews? 😁 Seriously, you raised so many interesting points about this board (a few of which I had not paid attention myself until you mentioned, such as the north facing backlighting that doesn't "leak" between the keycaps). And I agree with you wholeheartedly about Razer's PBT sets: one of the best backlit PBT sets out there (at any price range). As for the durability/reliability of this board, it speaks volumes about the application of optical technology to keyboard switches (nothing to physically wear down). And I also agree with you 100% that this keyboard was always looked down by "serious keyboard people" as a toy... And they couldn't have been more wrong! Sure, it is still to this day one of the best gaming keyboards out there, but that doesn't mean it isn't a fantastic productivity keyboard as well. PS: my Tartarus is not going anywhere… It is my number one video editing tool!

While the Razer key caps are thin, they fit their own switches. Thicker key caps bind up against the RBG light, which means you have to file away at the wall of “typical” key caps or else they end up being “sticky.”

Haha wow those mods made massiveeee difference ! Question: have you ever tried or seen putting sound damping material in the space key itself?
@IOSam
3 жыл бұрын
Hey Zac! Yeap... A little bit of elbow grease can take you a long way with this keyboard (which is usally true with almost any keyboard to be perfectly honest)! As for damping material in space bars, yes... I tried it in the past and found out that it can make a difference, specially when using higher profile caps (such as SA). But in general, properly tunning the stabs with lube, clipping stems and band-aiding PCB, seems to make a much bigger difference. Tunning the stabs will eliminate the rattle, which is 80% of the noise coming from the space bar, while stuffing it with damping material will just reduce the loudness of whatever noise is coming from the switch and the stabs underneath it. I'd say that tuned stabs will fix ~80% of the space bar noise issues, while damping material will fix ~20% of them. In a silent build, you'll definitely benefit from doing both.

Dam, that's a toss up between that keyboard and the the Gmmk that you modded as far as sounds or quietness go's. I was also thinking about something else you could use under the stabilizers instead of the of band_aid. I was thinking about Cloth tape or Wiring Harness Cloth Tape. You can get 5 rolls of it for like 10 dollars at amazon. Just something I thought I would put out there for people to think about. My Dad was electrician in the Navy for over 20 years and he just bought some here recently, so that's what made me think about it. Good Job and God Bless my friend.

I know, right? These damped silent red linear switches from Razer are in fact the best stock silent switches in the market to this day in reasonably priced production keyboards (they beat Cherry MX Silent Reds and Blacks hands down)! As long as you lube these switches wires, to remove the rattle, and mod the stabs in one of these Razer boards, you get a fantastic quiet keyboard for shared rooms where noisy keyboards are a no-go. As for the materials to dampen stabs, yeah… There are quite a few good options out there. I have already used cloth medical tape in some keyboards before and do work well too, and I believe wiring harness tape could also work well (since they are even a bit thicker than medical tape). Although the Razer Hunstman keyboards don’t really need any damping since they already come with small dampers in the posts under the stabs (here all you need to do is lube the wires). But for regular Cherry style stabs, today many fancy brands of aftermarket stabs already come with stabs damping stickers you can attach to the PCB when installing the stabs, which work well to reduce noise. KBDFans also sells rubberized stickers (kbdfans.com/r?id=73jpdn ) that come pre-cut and work even better. And if you want the ultimate quiet stabs, you can use silicone stickers (amzn.to/3fxLtt4 ), that will completely remove the tactility of the stabs bottom out (which I know some people don’t like), but that will remove 100% of the bottom out clack of the stabs. So, there are indeed plenty of options to mod stabs (from lower noise all the way to complete silence) in the market today!

@@FeArhsma21 Thank you my friend! Your sub is indeed very much appreciated!! And I had quite a chuckle reading your rant about youtubers asking for likes and subs! 😆 And you know what, you’re not alone! LOL I hate that too… I think any KZitem “power user” despises that (I mean, how many times do we need to hear that?). But I think it becomes like one of those brainless habits for youtubers that they never bother to revisit. In my case, I always start from the assumption that I don’t want people to subscribe to my channel just because I asked them to, since those can become “zombie subs” (people who sub and never watch another video in your channel again, which can actually hurt the channel in the long run). So, the little visual nudges I put in should work to remind the people that might actually care (and that might be so ingrained in the content that could potentially forget to click), but at least those are far less annoying than the whole “like, share and subscribe” prayer things in the beginning of every video. As for me answering comments, that is THE thing I set out to do with this channel from the start. I really want to build a community, which means there needs to be a two-way conversation between me and the viewers if I want to know them better (and know what they need, so I can address those needs in my content). Besides, there is a bonus that comes by constantly watching the comments section and interacting with viewers: I can also keep the spam and nasty stuff out (although it’s funny that spammers know a channel with abandoned comments section when they see it, so they don’t bother trying to sh!t all over mine… there is a sheriff in town here!☝🤠). I know comments moderation becomes much more challenging as the channel grows, but at least during this channel’s humble beginning, I want to enjoy these good chats here for as long as I can (hopefully Reddit and the future Patreon and Discord server can pick up from there in the future). Although I plan to do my best to never abandon the public comments section regardless of how much this channel happens to grow!

I'd certainly lube Razer analog/mechanical switches if I'd be willing to go through the trouble of desoldering them, but I'd not lube their optical switches since those already come pre-lubed with dry powder lube. Besides, lubing optical switches with grease or oil can block the light path if you don't know exactly what you're doing. But in any case, I'd ALWAYS lube the stabs' wires in Razer keyboards, since they're always rattly and do benefit from some good tuning.

I bought this keyboard some time ago. While I was originally fairly happy with my purchase, some dealbreaking issues appeared, including the keyboard working better without Synapse turned on, the fn key flickering and not work properly, and finally some of the keys just randomly won't work, particularly the "i" and "y" keys. Pretty bad experience. Replaced it with a Keychron K6 shortly afterwards and never looked back. Just ordered a Q1 as well :P Great review though! I just found your channel and I really enjoy your content so far. It's really good. You also remind me of Berlin from Money Heist.
@IOSam
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this great piece of feedback my friend! What you experienced there is one more of those annoying QC issues we never stop having with Razer and Logitech year after year (despite how pricey their products are). Having said that, please don't forget that both Logitech and Razer give you 2 years warranty on their keyboards. And as someone who has used both companies’ warranties in the past, I can attest to the fact they do work as advertised (and in fact both companies treaded me well when I needed to activate their warranties). Now specifically about the Huntsman line, when I opened this keyboard, I noticed that there is a chance the switches might misalign with use, which could get the laser beam partially blocked, which will, of course, fail to register. If your board is out of warranty, you can try to open it up (as I showed in the video) and the remove the switches (you can simply pop them off with your finger, since they are not soldered in) and then reinsert them to the PCB to see if this fix the problem with the bad switches. I believe there is a good chance that it would fix it. At least you'd have a fully functioning back-up keyboard just in case! ;) As for Keychrons... There will be an "ultimate guide" for the Q1 in this channel in the next couple of months (my Q1 is being delivered today :). And finally, I think I need to have a talk with Pedro Alonso (Berlin from Money Heist)... Since the number of people who approach me to tell me that I look like him is not insignificant! 😂

Hehe... Well, it depends where the space being taken is... If it is above the keyboard, where I don't keep anything important, I'm fine with it... But if gets in the way of my mouse (or other peripherals I happen to be using at the moment, such as a video editing jog-wheel for example) on the side, than that can become a problem for me (again, depending on what I'm doing at the moment). But I usually don't have a problem with larger keyboards for normal work (where I might need Function keys and a numpad anyway)... So much so that most of my boards are either TKLs or 1800 (96%). It is usually for travel, gaming and video/image editing that I prefer smaller keyboards. Besides, I also hate those kinked cables that don’t sit properly on the table, so a good coiled cable in the correct size (like the ones I make myself) actually work well to keep my desk tidy. And I agree that is crazy to pay the kind of money people pay for these fancy cables… I rather do them myself for a fraction of the cost! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you so much! I think Ducky and Varmilo are in a slightly different category of production keyboards. While they cost more or less the same and are better built than most performance keyboards from big brands like Logitech, Razer, Steelseries and Corsair, they don't offer the software and programability features that those brands do. So that ends putting these two in a different segment of the market (between Performance and Premium) that caters more to enthusiasts than the regular consumer market. For my particular case, yes... I would take a Ducky or a Varmilo over those big brands any day of the week, since they type and feel way better and I can live without software features (I have other programable keypads for those tasks). But I understand why most regular consumers like those types of features. And this is why I didn't compare the Razer Huntsman Mini to the Ducky One 2 Mini, 2 SF or with the Varmilo Miya Pro in the "Competitive Analysis" part of this video, since the majority of "prosumers" looking for a nice keyboard for working from home nowadays, probably fall in the category of users that want the ease of use that Synapse, GHub and iCue can offer (despite their shortcomings). And yes... The Realforce video will be the cherry on the top to close this series with a classic Premium production keyboard! ;)

@@IOSam Don't some of those offer programmability through VIA? Also, shouldn't something like a GK65 work since a build with it could be around $140 if one is budget conscious, and that works with VIA. Or is the GK65 too enthusiast?
@IOSam

@@Zentennen For Ducky and Varmilo, I'm not aware of QMK and VIA compatibility for any of their models. If that ever happens, than this whole picture will drastically change and they will instantly be way more competitive. As for the GK line, while they do offer a configuration software, the application is not polished enough for the average user. My experience with GK boards' configuration app has been difficult to say the least... LOL I mean, you definitely can create macros and backlighting, but you will probably be already an enthusiast by the time you can figure that out. Having said that, I love the GK line! Amazing value for the money if it fits you use case! I will definitely cover a few GK boards in this channel!

In 23:10 how do you change the hypershift color indicators? By default, when you press the FN key it lights up the secondary keys you can use for functions like PrntScr and such in white, and in the video you're doing it with caps lock (which I managed to do as well), but your caps lock key changes to a red color and the rest of the keys are normal, only the ones you're pressing change color
@IOSam
2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Two things: 1) The effect you see on the video (where keys change color when pressed and then go back to a default color a second later) can be achieved by compounding two different light effects on top of each other (the “static” color in the bottom and the “reactive” on top); 2) As you know, the FN key is permanently assigned to the Hypershift function and its behavior of lighting up the hardwired secondary functions of all other keys (which also can’t be changed) in white color (while the FN keys is pressed) cannot be altered in Synapse. But if you assign the Hypershift function to another key that can be reassigned (such as Caps Lock) the lighting behavior for that key can also be changed on Synapse (unlike the FN key). However the hardwired secondary functions’ custom color effects will ONLY kick-in after you release the Hypershift key (Caps Lock in this case) and will remain lit in white while you hold Hypershift --which is different from what I showed in the video because I think when I was recording that clip I had the wrong profile loaded to the keyboard 😆. But I just retested now here and I can confirm that, if you quickly release the Hypershift key, the arrow keys used as the example will show the “reactive” light effect animation. Hope that helps! :)

@@IOSam Thank you very much Sam! However, I do have an issue now. If I define the Caps Lock to be a Hypershift key, how can I actually use that key without creating a new profile? Is there any workaround for that?
@IOSam
2 жыл бұрын
@@kevhn Do you mean how to activate the actual "Caps Lock" function after you remap the Caps Lock key to become a Hypershift key? Well, you can either remap another key as a Caps Lock keys (such as I did with the "Menu" key on the bottom right, which I never use for the original "menu" function anyway) or you can map the Caps Lock function to any other remappable key on the Hypershift layer.

@IO Sam ayyyyy yoooo Frank I have a Mini too! Things that I did to it: 1. Removed useless key stabs. In my opinion they do absolutely nothing except noise 2. Each switch and its spring was opened with tweezers and lubed with some cheap-ass PTFE creammy looking grease (I didnt want to but 3 grams of Krytox for 12$). Ping is gone 3. Bottom case is fully packed with a sheet of aerated rubber. No ping and no hollowness 4. PCB is covered with strips of electrical tape so that switches can be clicked back in REAL tight. A lot less annoying key wobble 5. Stabs was lubed with the same grease as switches and their bottom stops were covered by electrical tape too (I like HPX stuff!) Would I benefit from upgrading to Mecha Mini or One 2 Mini with REDs/Speed Silvers? Huntsman Mini is my first ever mechanical experience and I like linears (I guess...)
@IOSam

Yo!!! Nice!!! But how did you manage to remove those keys’ stabs without breaking them? 😨 As for upgrading to a Mecha or a One 2 Mini, I’d say that, at this point in 2022, if you’ll upgrade from the Huntsman, you might as well go for a hot-swappable board like the One 3 Mini. Totally worth it in the sense that you’ll be able to play around with your switches without having to de-solder them (pretty much as you did with your Huntsman, but with the extra advantage of being able to replace them with a myriad of other switch options out there).

@@IOSam there is no secret, key stabs can be only removed if you pop out switch itself first and then it easy to figure out What if I already reached the peak with all those mods and next budget keyboard only be worse and louder :D I dont need any of the clicky-clacky-stuff, just want most quite possible linears in 60-65% format without braking the bank. As Usual, Great Video! Just food for thought. If you consider the value proposition, I think Epomaker Skyloong Sk64/64s is going to be a better one vs Razer huntsman mini provided someone is willing to change and lube stabs, Sound dampen, change stock keycaps. It has arrow keys, which is TBH pretty good stuff to have in office-related works. I have used it in my workspace for a month and TBH really liked that minus those cons. yes the software isn't as comprehensive as that of Razer's but it's half the price. plus the board is hot-swappable with gateron optical switches and there are very good Swtiches like gateron optical yellow and silver, pretty much on par or maybe even better than Razer ones! Keep up the good Work!! Love your videos :]
@IOSam

Thank you!!! That is a good point. GK/SK series is the undisputed value king for hot-swappable boards and it is impossible to not compare them with anything that the big box store suppliers such as Corsair, Razer, Logitech and HyperX put out. But in the case of this Home Office series, the only reason why I brought Razer in, is for the non-enthusiast crowd (which is a very big crowd! :) that might actually prefer a ready to use silent keyboard with the option for a more polished (although bloated) software interface for macros and keys remapping. I considered adding a GK/SK board in this series, but after playing around with its software interface, it became clear to me that non-enthusiasts would never be able to figure out how to set up a macro on those boards for example (GK/SK software is so difficult to use that I'm thinking about producing a video just to teach people how to use that thing! XD). But outside of that, yes... If you don't care about macros and will not use the included interface software, getting a GK/SK board and adding some quiet switches would indeed be a much better value for someone looking for a simple, portable silent working mech.

@@IOSam On that point, I thinking big manufacturers like razer , Asus, Corsair , Logitech, hyperx gotta amp up their keyboard a bit. The way the budget KB market is shaping up to be and more people are moving towards customs, not long before they get run over by the other brands.

@@SamBoga Honestly, I think it is already happening! Look at what Glorious PCGR is doing now... (which is, incidently, the main point I'm driving in my next video about the GMMK Pro) Glorious is driving a truck through the gap these tradditional players left open between the consumer and enthusiast markets! Which is absolutely fantastic as far as I'm concerned!!! Glorious first GMMKs, while already superior in hardware, had terrible software interfaces, but the GMMK Pro is waaaay better (and will get even better at that with time)! I love seeing dormant markets being shaken up by new entrants to innovate and drive prices down! And I believe the big dogs will eventually wake up to this... They won't be able to ignore players like Glorious and others from Asia, (from value oriented ones such as Skyloong and Akko to more premium ones such as Ducky and Varmillo) that will surely catch up on the usability side of their products, for much longer.

so how did you get the USB A portion to reconnect with what you cut? do the wires inside have to just be touching again when you put electrical tape back on? cuz if so then i may just get some of theat tech flex instead of dishing out $35 for a Tez Cables cable thats coiled.
@robertthomson1994

oooh nevermind i missed the part where you soldered a xlr cable to that end, my mistake
@IOSam

Yeah... And then I already had the other half of the cable (with the female XLR plug), that plugs to the PC, already done (I made that one for my first video here on the channel: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lKlq2Kl8f6OepKQ). So, if you'd do something like I did here (to re-purpose the USB-C cable that came with the Huntsman Mini), you'd still need to build the other half of the modular cable either by building one from scratch (like I did in my previously mentioned first video) or re-purposing another existing cable with an USB-A plug. Making your own custom coiled cables is, of course, a lot of work and might not be worth it if you just want one set. But in my case, someone who is always matching cables with different keyboards (with different types of connections) and keycap sets, and that already happen to have all the necessary tools, then it pays off to make your own cables. Even buying all the parts (with taxes and shipping) you'd still save a ton of money compared to what we usually pay for quality custom cables out there.
