the 10 COMMANDMENTS for PREVENTING RAZOR BUMPS & INGROWN HAIRS 1. THOU SHALT NOT USE DIRTY BLADES! Avoid shaving with dull, over-used razor blades. And be sure to keep your slightly used tools as clean as possible. Scrub the cutting heads of your tools with soap, hot water, and rubbing alcohol to destroy bacteria. Pro Tip: even brand new blades still need to be cleaned. 2. HONOR THY DELICATE SKIN! Avoid too many blades! If you are prone to ingrown hairs then you don’t need 3 or more blades. More blades equal more passes causing the hair to fall beneath the skin and become ingrown. Plus, more blading the skin leads to micro cuts through which bacteria is more likely to enter and this leads to razor burn. 3. DO NOT TAKE PREP TIME IN VAIN! Wash or steam the skin for 2 to 3 minutes with warm water. Then apply the shaving cream leaving it on for at least 2 minutes to really soften the hair. 4. THOU SHALT NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN! Shaving against the grain (upwards) may get you a closer shave but doing so also increases ingrowns. Shave in the direction of hair growth…it’s usually downwards. Confirm this by doing a face/ body inspection to see which way your hair grows. 5. THOU SHALT NOT PRESS! Avoid pressing too hard on the skin with the blade. If you follow STEP #3, then a gliding, light touch is all you need. The hair stubble should literally fall away with little or no pressure from the blade. Pressing hard is the main cause of shaving irritation! Be gentle so as to prevent the hair from being cut so low that it falls beneath the top layer of skin. 6. THOU SHALT NOT PASS, PASS, PASS! Avoid too many quick passes with the blade. One pass per hairy area - going 1-2 inches downward at a time - will prevent ingrown hairs. Always shave like you might cause damage, not like you’re mowing the front lawn. 7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT OVER SHAVING! Avoid shaving too often. This rule is hard to follow, especially if you have to be beardless for your job…but if you are prone to ingrowns, try hair removal with electric clippers (the barber kind of clippers). The results are not super close but no one but you will know the difference. Provided your skin can handle these alternatives try waxing, depilatory, lasering or an epilator. 8. THOU SHALT NOT CLOG! Avoid using skin/pore clogging creams or lotions since they keep hairs from growing up. After a shave, keep your skin bare; let the tiny army breath, and allow those newly shaved, microscopic hairs to grow out just in time for the next shave. If your objective is smooth, bump-free skin following a shave or wax, then right after hair removal allow the skin to heal first. Promote healing by proper shaving techniques followed by 70% rubbing alcohol which kills any bacteria that may enter those micro cuts created from the shave and prevents the onset of razor burn. Sure your skin will be a little dry at first but this is a temporary tradeoff. Wait 2 hours then moisturize. 9. KEEP THY SMOOTH SKIN FREE! At least for the first day or two, try to avoid tight fitting clothing around the Adam’s apple (neck) and/or below the waistline region. Newly shaved hair follicles need room to grow up. 10. REMEMBER TO EXFOLIATE! Whether you shave, sugar, wax or epilate, not enough exfoliation to remove excess layers of skin can lead to ingrown hairs. There are two types: chemical exfoliation (AHA, BHAs) and physical exfoliation (beads, coffee scrubs, gloves, brushes). Physical exfoliators like the WIZKER brush have soft and firm bristles for the face, body, and sensitive skin. When you follow these 10 tips religiously, you’ll prevent razor bumps and ingrown hairs permanently!

Just clean your razor before and after shaving with isopropyl alcohol by soaking it for about 5 minutes, whether it's electric razor or not. You could also wipe the areas with isopropyl alcohol after shaving them. Besides that method, nothing else will ever be required. The reason your skin breaks out is simply because of the dead skin cells build up on your razors. I'm 40. I'm bald with a beard and I've been bald for 20 years. I shave weekly. I struggled with this in the army, and i have some tips. Shave with a washed and clean razor. Once a razor doesn't feel completely smooth when shaving, you have to change it immediately and keep changing them every several shaves. To decrease the cost of the razor blades.. I bought an old school EDISON razor blade for shaving. Every blade costs 0.1$ and I change them every two shaves.. (one shave for each side of the blade) Also notable is that I switched to aftershave creme rather than spray.

It lathers up beautifully - Rinse soap off - Personally I use a highly concentrated conditioner as shaving cream - Use a descent razor 🪒 I use Bic 3 Titanium. More than 3 blades gives me irritation. Dont press down hard, let the pivoting head do all the work. Proper technique allows you to shave against grain and have baby smooth skin - One last gentle pass with a soft facial pad + a moisturizing soap - Get out of shower - Apply moisturizer. I use a mix of grass fed tallow + a little Vaseline - Pay off your credit cards

Get a doubled edged safety razor. The way we do with wet shaving is to get 2~3 passes of shaving, max 4 if needed. First pass is along the grain of hair growth, then 2nd pass x-grain or across the hair growth, lastly against it. Sometimes, like I do two passes along the grain, and 2 passes across it. Depends on how clean I want it to look, that's why it can vary but usually it's max 4 passes. The reason why along the grain is recommended first because it shaves the hair down close to skin further, with little to no irritation. This makes the next passes go thru with less resistance as it tries to shave the ones already close to the root. One way you identify if you've already shaved close enough with along and across is the if you feel your hand along and across your hair in the direction where you shaved is smooth and don't feel too many bumps. If that's the case, you've already shaved it as far as it can go in that direction, and when you feel it against the grain you'll feel the hair bumps , it'll be up to you if you want to shave against the grain for the cleanest look. Personally I don't do it like Doctorly with glycolic acid. It may help, since they're dermatology, but with us in the wet shaving community, our after shave can vary. In my case, it's either witchazel/alum block to close the pores, lessen irritation, as well as close/prevent any of the cuts/nicks done during the shave which can also result in razor bumps/scars. Then an aftershave like nivea sensitive post shave balm for the moisturizing effect. Wetshaving/wicked edge reddit has a lot of good info. I also hated shaving primarily because of how expensive disposable razors are, cartridge razors, as well as how irritating it can get. Electric shavers don't also go as smooth as razors, but after I discovered wet shaving, I learned how to apply lather, shave properly, and do proper care. It takes longer sure, mine can take up to 30 mins depending on how many passes I do, but it's also the most cleanest and satisfying shaves I've done in years.

@sphinx_8872

From what I've found BHA is most commonly salicylic acid and helps with cutting through oil production, and some bacterial fleansing. Where as AHA's generally lactic acid or glycolic acid ( glycolic being the deepest penetrating) stimulate skin cell turn over, and collagen production, and shedding of dead skin cells. When it comes to shaving the glycolic will help reduce the chances of a bump, or ingrown forming as its removed the dead cells and stimulated the newer cells in the deeper dermis layers. Best tip i have found too is always use a sharp razor, and after shaving use a hydrating spritz that has hyaluronic acid to help lock in the skins moisture barrier. I follow by using Lipikar Baume....many years suffered myself till i cracked how to. Hope that helps.

Here's my routine, I'm no pro tho, just a regular guy learning as I go. Shave in the shower. Shave less often. Use rubbing alcohol on your razor to disinfect it. If your up for some stinging, throw some rubbing alcohol on where you shaved right after.

My Routine: (may or may not work for everyone) Exfoliate your skin before shaving, I like KP Duty body scrub. Use a safety razor. Use a great shaving cream, or conditioner. I find my skin likes conditioner more (which is inconvenient for me cause it clumps on my safety razor lol), and I use the glycolic acid after the shaving to help with strawberry legs. And lastly, lotion up ❤️❤️❤️

Also change your razor hear regularly and dry it off before placing it in a dry place for storage so it does not collect bacteria. Shave with the grain not against the grain. And if the areas with high moisture on your body, like groin and armpit area, gets irritated after shaving instead of giving into the itch that can spread bacteria to your skin from your nails or fingers making the problem worse, use talc free baby powder. It relieves the itch.

I can’t explain why it works but my secret is to always use warm water to wet the skin and then take my razor and literally scrape the blades over a bar of soap a few times and let it sit for 5 minutes (without washing the soap bits off) before I use it on the skin…. Idk how but it softens the blade and I haven’t gotten bumps for years since I started doing it

The most important thing- have a good razor! I'm using safety razor and that should last 3-6 shavings per blade depending on what kind of hair you have. They're not that much different from cartridge razors and are WAY cheaper and more sustainable so I do recommend learning to use it.

While these may be the theoretical best methods to use to avoid razor bumps, in most cases people won’t need a special glycolic acid solution nor avoid shaving in both directions to get a nice, clean, bump-free shave. I used to get terrible razor bumps and after just adding/getting better at these to my routine, my after-shave skin is smooth like baby bum: - keep sink running the hottest bearable water and both splash on face initially as well as keep using to reheat/clean your razor - apply a proper (not too thin/thick) layer of shaving cream and be sure to actually rub it a little bit in - start with an initial shave along the grain and learn your hair growth pattern, then afterwards reapply shaving cream and go against the grain in quick light strokes and be sure to have as hot a razor as you can handle - apply generous amount of alcohol-containing aftershave, let sit for a few minutes, then wash off and apply a moisturizer (I actually use two - aftershave balm followed by regular moisturizer)

Soften your hair with warm water. Do one turn with the grain and second against the grain to ensure all hair removal. Apply the cream or whatever you're using and then do against the grain. Splash with cold water, Apply moisturizing after shave afterwards.

Exfoliation is the only thing that helped me. Even just using a short electric razor like the one blade would leave me with horribly painful and itchy bumps on my neck. Exfoliating really thoroughly after shaving and getting all the dead skin off solved it. Idk if the dead skin traps the short hairs or grows over the openings or what but scrubbing the hell out of the area with an akorean exfoliating towel or a body brush cured it for me

As a bloke who gets horrendous shaving rash, use a decent bloody razor. Your razor youve used for the last week is why you have it. Shave with the grain first, then against. Alcohol based aftershave afterwards 👍

A few other tips I've learnt are single blade or two for razor is better and tend skin product after shaving to prevent razor bumps. Also to gently exfoliate every couple of days after shaving to prevent ingrown hairs.

use shaving soap or cream in a tube (not barbasol) and a mild, single blade razor. brush in the soap/cream well. take a shower to soften the hair and let the soap/cream soak in for at least a minute. you can also use a pre-shave cream or oil for extra protection, I use proraso pre-shave I'm surprised dermatologists aren't as well verse in healthy shaving as much as the online shaving community. I mean they're doctors

Or use a good old fashioned single blade, double edge safety razor with shaving soap. The modern multi blade technology just doesn't work on the faces of a lot of men and creates micro infections. Plus with old fashioned razor blades they cost pennies each and you can buy multipacks to experiment and find which blade company creates the perfect shave for your hair and skin type.

My dermatologist suggests to use a benzoyl peroxide face wash and leave it on for 3-5 minutes. I use 10% cause I’m used to it but suggest less because it is drying. Wash it off, Use some shaving gel/cream to reduce friction. And then use hydrocortisone for the irritation. Works every single time for me

Best tip is to use a safety or straight razor. Went from getting insane razor bumps before, got a straight blade, then never got razor bumps again. Single blades get you a slightly less smooth shave, but they don't shove the hair under the skin and cause ingrown hairs and bumps

Use shaving cream and wet the skin with warm water so youre not shaving over goosebumps(at least when it comes the the legs) Also i think if you run the razor over the skin too many times itll irritate it and dont be rough with the skin either. Slow and gentle strokes are best imo.
