I understand that you need pressure when you do your honing to get enough metal off for a good sharp bevel. However, when I see you stropping you apply quite an amount of pressure too with the strap not being overly tight: Aren't you afraid of rounding off the edge?

This has been one of the most helpful videos on this subject that I have seen so far. Thank you for the very practical and approachable wisdom you share on the art. I'm a licensed barber, formally trained in a barber college for two-thousand hours and have over 30 years of experience in the profession of hair-cutting. However, I, have never mastered the art of honing razors even though I practiced honing vigorously in barber college and a little thereafter. I'm now venturing again to master this art because I would really like to bring some of my estate sale straight razor finds into shaving condition. Ultimately, I would like to put into regular use, a cache of straight razor into my servicing routines at the barber shop, reducing my reliance on replaceable straight razors. I think that I have gotten a few blades into range of fair shaving function but far from what I perceive to be possible based on videos like yours. This all makes me wonder just how many barbers can actually do this. It seems a most onerous undertaking but I really want to be that barber in modern times who can indeed keep straight razors in optimal shaving condition. This had to be a significant part of a barber's work when he had to rely on traditional straight razors to shave. An think of the home-shavers and do-it-yourselfers who, before the safety razors, developed this skill-set to give themselves shaves on a regular basis. I have ruined a lot of stones and razors over the years trying to hone a razor. I also now realize that the preparation and training I got from barber college was rather inadequate for actually mastering the art of honing: there was, I now surmise, no real expectation of my instructors for success because the training did not even come close to bringing me into the realm of mastery. Without the type of wisdom and insight you are sharing, I would could forever expect to be frustrated demoralized by failure. What I now perceive to be the actual learning curve for success in honing with consistency makes my barber college honing training seem a bit gimmicky.

@@drmatt357 Hey Doc, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure what your geographical frame of reference is but straight razor shaving is definitely permitted /allowed in the United States in barbershops. A barbershop, however, should not be confused with haircutting chains like "Super Cuts, Fantastic Sams, Borics, Master Cuts, Sport Clips, Cost Cutters, etc.) because these facilities are licensed as salons or cosmetology establishments: they are NOT barbershops. Most states in the US make it illegal for a haircutting establishment's to display a barber pole on the premises unless the establishment is actually a barbershop with a licensed barber performing grooming services. So look for the barber pole generally if you want to go to real barbershop. It is in fact illegal in most states in the U.S. for the aforementioned cosmetology establishments to perform shaves or use straight razors on patrons. When I went to barber college I was required to do 500 more hours to get the barber license as oppose to the comparable cosmetology license. The additional 500 hours of training is attributable to learning how to shave with a straight razor and this is still part of the barber's curriculum in Michigan and throughout the United States with only one exception that I know of, a county in Alabama that does not require licensure for barbering services. I'm getting a pretty good grasp of honing straight razors and now have about 10 vintage traditional straight razors in my tool kit at work in the barbershop that I use to perform my barber services on a regular basis now. On my KZitem channel I have posted some videos recently demonstrating my use and maintenance of straight razors in the barbershop. I still have several shavettes or injector style disposable straight razors that I use also. So far, the benefits of the traditional straight razor for me is that: (1) there is a hobby like appeal to its use in the barbershop;, (2) it reduces my reliance and dependance on the disposable shavette blades; and (3) because the hygiene and sanitation protocols associated with shaving with razors, I gain a little efficiency by having 10 or so straight razors ready to go at the beginning of a work-shift. Happy Shaving!

Greetings from central Europe. I'm fascinated how easy you sharpened that razor. Really great job! Thank you for sharing this video. I'd like to have a question on you, sir: At 8:42 you "killed" the already sharpened edge. Is this moment of "killing" - making dull - standard step during your sharpening at the 8000 grit? And why at that moment and not sooner. Thank you for your answers. JT
@drmatt357
2 жыл бұрын
Good question JT. Killing the edge as I show is controversial. My detractors will tell you I don’t know what I’m doing, it’s unnecessary and you’re causing undue harm to the blade. Thing is, they can’t see what I see under my scope at 1000X. When you have the blade on a 400 diamond plate, it can leave some deep grooves and a toothy edge. I do it at 8K instead of sooner because with the 8K you won’t re-create the toothiness giving the smoothest edge. Could you do it without killing the edge? Yes but there’s an increased chance of a rougher edge.

@@RadomKidsareme000 - Probably still wouldn't see much. You can see a difference in the edge from coming straight off the stone and then stropping it. But after the first time stropping, you won't see any difference. If you look at my latest video on the La Lune stone, I have some slides in there of before and after the strop. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sWaDm5WQgoZjrWU

I have a razor steel tool 01 that cuts some arm's hair but with big difficulty so I imagine the bevel is not completely set? Should I go for continuing the bevel on a choosera 1000K until cuts easily the hairs or should kill on a glass the edge? and after go for 5000, 8000, 12000. I saw others guys set the bevel with the 3000k but probably they kill a bevel just formed very well so that in reality the bevel is not killed completely?
@drmatt357

Did you take the 01 blade to a finish stone before trying to cut arm hair? If you did, it may need to go back to the bevel setter. Kill the edge then bring it back on the 1K until it cuts the tomato skin. I hear guys say that you should be able to "easily" cut arm hair on a bevel setter. They must be that much better than me (but I really suspect they're just dick waving) because I can't but I can get it to cut a tomato skin. Then you KNOW the bevel is set and take it home from there and that progression you mentioned would be fine.

@@drmatt357 First of all I want to tell you I have very small experience But I have learnt a lot! Sure not like you or the others guys ! it takes me a lot to understand what you say and less that is a fraction of second to understand why you say that they say dicks!!!! for using this strong word! 😁 Here my opinion and my very very little!!!!! and modest experience!!!!!. Effectively the honing process is very very complicated is done in the professional way!!! For what I suspect looking at my big failures!!!!! What you say is not correct but I could be wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!! judge by yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙄 The system you use I suspect is not correct or completely correct even if works from your point of view. I bought three straight razor very expensive and have destroyed one to to send to a man professional to hone so I have learn this! Before deciding for going to the 1000k one should do the shine test for seeing if there are spot light °( Portland razor) . Make investigations. I did understand you must see a long white line that means there is a bevel set but I'm not sure! I see this line!!! Saw this line you should go for the 1000 and when the line desapears should pop easily all the arms beard including tomatoes! That should not be correct for going ahead following this theory. I must make other research on you tube but really I saw this white line but not sure this corresponds to the line must desapear!!!! Honing on a 1000k cut the steels but very very slowly( more steel but very slowly and there is the risk you cut much steel going back instead than forward!!!!!! so going to the infinite!!!!!!!!) so you must insist for hours in certain case or use strong pressure or use slurry and at the end will cut not easily the beard ( this is what i found!) Going ahead you should arrive at a point to cut easily the beard !!!! but if you overhoning it will never cut beard you will regress to the start point this is why you shoul procede step by step!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So Yes that guys are probably very very correct!!!!! But this take time!!!!!!!!!! and a razor in perfect conditions!!!!! and a techinique very professional people usally haven't!!!!!!! Continuing to honing should deseappear this line and this momente shoould pop hairs!!! This is true? this is a fake? judge by yourself !!!! I must control but it sounds logic !!!!! For sure explained so it seems not clear and probably it is not clear but sounds correct at first istance. I could't go until that point because when I repaired my destroyed razor the spine was corrected and also the cutting edge now perfectly flat! But being now a wedge I should need to put 4 layers on the spide to sharpened it! otherwis I wiill scrachtes also! not only not honing!. Probably i will do! Because doing by end the razor finally cut the beard but not easily so this means the theory is correct!!!! The problem the being a wedge it takes hours! and diamond stone with more grit than 1200K! and perhaps I could easily cut beard insisting! But being 10 mm the total razor I should control also the geometry of the wedge using information I havent. For the others two razors I decided one to send to the factory and the other to put on a table when i will have the skill for honing a razor that has curve on the heel ( some millimeters) and curve on the toe( hundredths of a millimeter). Rolling Half strokes is to risky on a razor so expensive and sendig it to the factory has to be evaluated. Now there is my conclusion wrong or right decide you!!!! Continuing honing on a 1000 k give a a easily cut of the beard but requires a lot ot time!!! Doing like you a partial bevel set but on the level to cut a tomato permitis to go to the 5000k like you always do and having a cutting edge probably good for shaving but with less angle!!!! and so less chin hold of the thread because as for a pencil it is less sharp. I don't know what you think but you should try with a straight razor as possible otherwise you have to do the rolling stroke in the corners! and continue until the hair is cut easily! It took me 40 minutes to cut the hair but now it is a full wedge blade with modified geometry and without having put the tape as it should be done but tilting it manually and therefore not maintaining the angle and therefore making a mistake and in spite of everything it cut the hair but not easily for all the above reasons! I have no other razors to destroy otherwise I would do some tests! Maybe give me a site to buy a gold dollar so I can practice with a 4-penny stick! Have a good day!

@@drmatt357Matt I have found that part of my theory is correct. I will give you a link where a famous professional a famous professional created the bevel of a razor on a Dia sharp Dmt grit extra coarse stone with the same technique I used !!!!!!!!!!!! It is 220 grit, a bit distant from the 400k or 325K (Portland razors) or 325 (Dovo razors) they recommend using. So probably if the bevel is the white line that I also see on the shavette of my blade, I should go for the 1000k "Chosera" or whatever but at the moment I can't do that until I've tested my skill on a cheap razor. What this man did on the 220 Dmt grit is the same as "Portland" suggests. So I think it doesn't have to be wrong !. But here I also have the problem of curves at the tip and at the foot of the razor. So I have to perform half strokes as I have seen this professional do exactly as I described in detail even though he never did it. Yes I know I made a lot of mistakes in English. Not that I am unable to write in almost perfect English! But not being a native speaker and in a hurry I don't care much about writing in perfect English !!! But since you pointed this out nicely to me, I'll try to write a little more correctly. You know I believe that when communicating in a foreign language it is much more important to be understood without misunderstandings than to write correctly. I warmly greet you. Tell me what you think outspokenly. I enjoy hearing the opinions of others. Sometimes you learn something. This time there should be less mistakes.
