How Submarines Work
Electric energy obtained from the diesel engine is used for propulsion in submarines. Electrical energy is collected in batteries and transmitted to electric motors. Since the diesel engine cannot operate under water (due to the air needed for the diesel engine to operate), movement is provided by electric motors.
The state of all bodies in water is determined according to the Archimedes principle. Accordingly, a force in the opposite direction of its weight is applied by the fluid to the object released into any fluid medium such as water or air. This force, known as the buoyant force of water, is the determining factor in the positions of the objects in the water. All vehicles moving in the sea provide their movement in this way. However, submarines are specialized structures that differ from other marine vehicles with their controlled sinking (diving) and exiting movements. Submarines facilitate maneuverability in the sea, thanks to this special plunge-and-shoot system.
Submarines make their diving and exiting movements thanks to special tanks called ballast tanks. The basic working principle is based on the compression of high pressure air in these tanks with water and compressed air in the compressor. Bile tanks are filled with air or water, depending on whether the submarine stays on the surface of the water or dives. For example, when a submarine is at the surface of the water, the ballast tanks are filled with air and the submarine does not sink under the water because its density is less than the density of the surrounding water. When the submarine wants to dive into the water, the upper and lower covers of the ballast tanks are opened. While water enters through the lower covers of the tanks, air comes out from the upper covers. Tanks that fill with water gradually increase the weight of the submarine and allow it to dive deeper into the water. When the submarine wants to resurface, air is transferred from the tanks containing compressed air to the ballast tanks. Compressed air allows the water to escape and the submarine rises to the surface of the water.
