I can't believe how realistic this game actually is. This exact style coaster is in Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, spiral lift and all. That lift alone almost bankrupted the park because of how often it broke down and costly it was to keep operating, but it's one redeeming quality was that it was everyone's favorite ride because it was exciting but not intense, it was the first roller coaster most of us in the area ever rode because anyone of any age could ride it and have so much fun.

Something I want to add: this coaster is GREAT for scenarios that need you to build coasters to a specific length (like Octagon Park and Ghost Town). The spiral lifts can really up the length of the coaster, meaning it can take up less space than most other coaster types.
@MarcelVos
5 жыл бұрын
That is very true. You can do the same thing on many other coasters with long stacked helices though. The difference is that people generally don't think of doing that while the spiral lift hill comes naturally for the spiral coaster.

There are very few of these rides left. Willard’s Whizzer at Six Flags Great America outside of Chicago is probably the best example. Riders sit single file tobagan style, on a long padded bench, often without a restraint. Awesomely fun ride. These were made by Schwarzkopf a defunct very early steel coaster manufacturer that are known for their intense but smooth rides.

@@JRRusseau This! I rode Whizzer every weekend this past summer (treated myself to a season pass to SFGA) and - despite it being an older coaster - it rides very smoothly aside from a sharp banked turn here and there. Dunno about others of its kind in the world, but Whizzer has a retractable seatbelt that goes around the riders that ride ops check is fastened before giving the all clear.

Yes, more ride overviews! As someone who knows nothing about how to read code, I greatly appreciate your ability to divulge this info. I also really appreciate your videos about general game mechanics! I'd like to request overviews of the Ferris Wheel or Merry-Go-Round. From my experience, they are very bad rides in general. Yet everyone seems to build them anyway, perhaps for the simple reason that they are such classic theme parks rides. A method to get the most out of these rides would be very cool! It could also be an opportunity to show some of OpenRCT2's decorative possibilities, in the case of the Ferris Wheel (By disabling collisions and placing it in the water to make a water wheel, for example).

Having realised now that the lift hill is the main expense of this coaster type, I think this could be an extremely good option for when there is an elevated station. There can be lots of scenario uses for this, such as rainy scenarios where you can build a station above ground and then most of the ride below ground. I was able to build a ride that met the stat requirements for about the same price as the tiny coaster, but with support for two 2-car trains, and it can be even cheaper on hilly terrain. I found a place for adding this design on Grand Glacier for only €1604. The downside is of course the path expense, but it can still be worth it.

Schwarzkopf (known for custom and portable steel coasters in the 70s and 80s) built these in real parks and called them Speed Racers. They had more gradual curves than the tight turns in the game so they didn’t look as odd as they do here. America had several of these at one time, with most having been removed or rebuilt overseas. There were smaller portable models too called Jumbo Jet. One remaining example in America is Whizzer at Great America park near Chicago Illinois. It is a custom layout and a perfect middle coaster - big but an ideal step up for young riders. The look (and sound) of the spiral lift, plus the inline seating make these unique.

or maybe you make quite big coaster and these rides are not fit for the massive size you are giving (Cokscrew have a bit harsh natural intensity and a +10% intensity increase and the inverted get nauseating/intense quicker than most other coaster types). A good example of a ride that if you make every stat requirements of it, it will have a quite high intensity, the stand-up coaster [not the stand-up twister, as it just have higher stat compared to the sit down twister if these 2 were build the same]

Usually it's pretty easy to find coasters for the random footage I need during the overview, but almost no one ever uses the spiral coaster. For this video I had to use two parks from other people and build two spiral coasters specifically for this video. For the Dynamite Dunes coaster I used OpenRCT2's cheat to transform it from a mine train coaster into a spiral coaster.

I've always had a strange relationship with this coaster. The intensity to Excitement rating is what makes me dislike the coaster. It gives off the vibe it's too easy and the overly forgiving nature of it I see as a little detrimental. But this is purely just me and I tend to lean towards the more difficult Excitement to Intensity coasters, such as the Stand Up coaster and Heartline (which I still have developed a strange liking for. Must be Stockholm Syndrome?). But it's still a fairly nice coaster overall IMO. Not overly expensive, but can put a dent in your pocket should you be careless. Great video as always!

I get where you're coming from. I also really like the standup coaster because it looks great and provides a nice challenge. With the heartline coaster I have a strange love-hate relationship that I can't entirely place. it's bloody terrible, but it's so terrible that it's actually kinda hilarious.
@DoktorVicTim

And the funny thing is that despite its horrible stats, my Heartline coasters tend to have a surprisingly good/above average guest throughput pretty consistently with low queue times while always being full. And as I said about the Side Friction Coaster, the Heartline has its place when it comes to theming and aestethics. Statwise it's terrible. At least the Spiral Coaster is amazing statwise. Can end up becoming deceptively expensive, but that is my problem alone because I love to make big coasters that coast in just slow enough without the use of brakes.

The spiral coaster is based on the Schwartzkopf Speed Racer and Jet Star 2/3 models. As the manufacturer has long since gone defunct, there are only a few remaining. The Jet Star 2 and 3 are portable, mass-produced designs, while the Speed Racer was a custom variant. I've had the chance to ride Jet Star 2 at Lagoon and Whizzer at Six Flags Great America. I wouldn't say they're less intense than similarly-profiled steel coasters, however they're much less intense than taller, faster models made in later years, even by Schwartzkopf, and don't feature inversions. You can compare them somewhat to the Vekoma, Intamin and Zeirer family models. One major difference however is the restraints. Most have a simple seatbelt and no lap bar. They feature taboggan-style seating, and many parks don't allow single riders, so you'll likely be either in someone's lap or someone will be in yours! You can still get some great pops of airtime on these however! Another interesting piece of trivia about the spiral coaster is the lift hill is very untraditional. Instead of a chain lift, there is an electrified rail in the center of the track, which provides power to motors on the cars, similar to a dark ride. The trains propel themselves to the top of the spiral lift, and then gravity takes over. This might be why the spiral lift is so expensive in RCT2!

How can security guards be used efficiently? Just use regularly patterned patrols? I don't fully understand their mechanics.
@Trancefreak12
5 жыл бұрын
Security guards only protect the 13×13 area that they are the center of, so to create the largest area of guaranteed no vandalism, you should restrict the patrol area to as small a space as possible. You can do something like place a single path that's not connected to anything else and put the security guard on it. If this is ugly, you can put the path underground or inside some scenery.
