My favourite exchange of Season 8 is in this story, after Rimmer's going "WE'RE FINISHED", and Lister tells him to can it, asking Holly for advice. "Do you want the long version or the short version?". "The long one?" "You're finished." "What's the short version?!" "Bye". xD Gotta love Holly!

My favorite part (I think it's this episode) when Hollister says they're tormenting a valued and respected member of the crew, and Rimmer just blithely goes "That is absolutely not true, we were tormenting _Mr. Ackermann_ sir". Also Cat saying, "There's an old cat saying: We are all...gonna die!" with an enormous terrified grin on his face.

I liked this episode a lot, too. Really the only problem I had with it was that the idea of Pete seemed like it should have been a sub-plot, because a lot of the first part was about Rimmer and Lister going to the Captain's Office. In fact, we hardly see Pete as a sparrow through most of it. If they were going to call it "Pete", then they should have featured him more. Also, I don't know too much about a dinosaur's reproductive system, but if Pete is a male, how can he lay an egg? Furthermore, where would he find a female dinosaur to mate with. The sub-plots make up for this very well and are funny. I just think they either should have shown Pete more as both sparrow and dinosaur or renamed it something else. "Time Wand" comes to mind.

Aw, you left out Listers SPECTACULAR basketball shot using his head. Clearly not scripted as he runs off celebrating like he’s won the World Cup. Also Kochanski is playing but we never see her scoring any baskets or laughing at the guards and their....obvious inadequacies :p Speaking of Kochanski - did you notice at the dinner where Pete dies that she’s wearing the sparkly dress Lister got her in the previous season? Also, a person has to take something into consideration: 1. After 3 million years, where would they suddenly get a cow to put in a vindaloo? 2. What is Birdman doing with a bird if there are no pets allowed on the ship. It is possible that Birdman might have been on the ship with the bird and they sent him to the hole because he didn't want to get rid of it. But still, after 3 million years, would not a cow and a bird have evolved into a humanoid creature like The Cat did?
@Cyborcat
3 жыл бұрын
The cow was probably dead and being kept in a freezer to feed the crew at some point. And I'm not sure why you assume that the bird stayed alive when every human on the ship was killed by radiation. It was killed, then remade by the nanobots just like the crew (and probably the cow as well).

Great review, as always.I kinda wish season 8 didn't have the cast stuck in the tank for the whole run.I mean, you'd think Lister and Kochanski would be more determined to tell Captain Holister about how dire the Red Dwarf's situation really is and to throw the space corps protocol out the window. They're millions of light years in deep space and are most likely the last group of humans left in the universe. I know it's a comedy, so that sort of thing doesn't really factor into the Red Dwarf agenda. Still, it would have been neat to see some pre-radiation leak dynamics and interactions between the "boys from the dwarf" and the revived crew.

This season has far too many inconsistencies and plain bad writing: Lister and Rimmer getting in trouble for removing all the potato skins, when Rimmer says to the captain that he was trying to get the timewand back, yet the captain didn't, and wasn't supposed, know about that, Kryten accidentally creating the T-rex after using the timewand for various things without issue, nevermind the captain saying how the timewand has too much power to fall into the wrong hands and then giving it to Rimmer and Lister! At the beginning of the season the higher-ups know they've traveled 3 million years into deep space, that Red Dwarf's been magically retrofitted and that Lister and crew crashed a different Starbug to the identical replica clearly seen in the hangar, and that Kryten's from the future 23rd century (although Lister's said previously that he's a 23rd century guy?), so believing their story and getting as much information as possible out of them would make sense, whereas putting them through psychotropic/AR testing to determine if they're guilty of destroying a Starbug that's *still there* and that their story checks out makes none whatsoever. There's many other times where the logic doesn't add up and Lister etc act out of character, and turning RD into a prison comedy with sci-fi trimmings also didn't sit with myself and many other fans; I figured the creators thought them being trapped in deep space by themselves was a similar concept to them being trapped in jail, with the canarie's missions to derelict ships/bases also being equivalents to the crew's previous salvage missions, but they're really not the same as all their previous exploratory and personal freedoms are lost and their dynamic is significantly changed, in no small part to the "Possy" being broken up into two separate groups. That's why I think many fan's and myself rather disliked this season.

Lister saying he’s an enlightened 23rd century guy actually proves he’s from the 22nd century, which is when he was born canonically. This is because what lister said was actually a very common saying. In the 20th century you’d have people calling themselves enlightened 21st century folk as it’s a way of saying they’re ahead of the curve I guess.

I LOVE your reviews, but I must say that I find season 8 to be a bit low-ball in the humor. The "Do you know what happens..." speech went on a bit too long, especially considering it involved juvenile poop and burp references. The dinosaur scenes were RIDICULOUS--not because of the CGI but because of the content. Overall, this is the WORST season of Dwarf. The only reason I watch this is to see Rimmer and Lister de-clothed! :D

If they were going to keep the dinosaur around then I wish they would’ve explained why Kryton didn’t just fix it immediately with the time wand, he just held it then got rid of it. They had plenty of time. They wouldn’t have had a budget issue if they did that. Also why not speed up time for everyone else to end their sentence then destroy the wand?

What a disgusting episode. It just leaves you feeling greesely, sweaty, and in dire need of a shower. I think this was the exact point I abandoned the series until RD IX was announced. This episode also reminds me of the times I got into trouble in Kindergarten and Elementary School and got sent to the Principal's Office in an endless cycle of punishment that made this episode extra unpleasant. I couldn't bring myself to find humor in this situation.

@GideonGleeful95

Ok, so Cyborcat is actually in the right here (qualifications: I did a Biology degree including a module called Avian Diversity that included a section about the evolution of birds). So, first off Dinosaurs are devided into toe main branches: Saurischians (lizard hipped) and Ornithiscians (bird hipped). The branch that includes the dinosaurs that evolved into birds is, you guessed it, the lizard hipped ones... yeah science is confusing sometimes. In any case the lizard hipped dinos have two branches themselves: The Theropods and the Sauropods. The Sauropods are the ones with the long necks like Diplodopcus. The Theropods are the two legged meat eating ones like T-Rex, Allosaurus and Velociraptor. The birds evolved from one of the branches of Therapods, specifically the branch that also has the raptors and related dinos. T-Rex was on a seperate branch of the Therapods, and by the time T-Rex had evolved primitive birds had been around for like 90 million years, longer than the non-avian dinosaurs have been extinct. The dinosaur the sparrow probably would have evolved into would be a small, sparrow-sized raptor-like dinosaur with feathers. The scenario shown in the show is kind of like if the humans were sent back in time evolutionarily and ended up as Telicomys, an extinct species of rodent.
